Love the hat!
Thank you! 😁
Good list, another one for me that's, mysterious is Harley Quin in the short mystery stories the Mysterious Mr. Quin by Agatha Christie
Oh yes! I really enjoyed that series. He almost made this list.
I also reserve the right to DNF pet semetary!
Good! I can’t imagine not having that option lol.
It takes the less than great books to help us appreciate the really great ones!
Oh wow, that’s a really good point! 😃
That blanket is amazing!!!
I know right? So comfy!
Kid in a grown-up’s body. Same same.
😂 Yay!
Great video, even if I skipped number 5 because I refuse to be spoiled even a little bit about The Farseer haha. I do think Tom Bombadil (sp??) is a good choice for this list but also he is a character I just never think about, I literally do not care what his lore is, for me he was forgettable 😅.
Haha I can appreciate that. He’s not for everyone. I’m glad you skipped Farseer for spoilers. Wouldn’t want to ruin it for you. 😁
You should really read the shardlake series by author CJ Sansom, it's historical fiction
Oh ok, thanks! I may check it out. I’m hit or miss with historical fiction, but I’ve read a couple of good ones.
I love, hate and fear Kellhus. When you read more, I am sure you’ll feel the same. Anomander Rake is also another bad ass character. So Epic! Let me know when you start reading this it’ll be cool to read together. Glabatorix was one of my childhood fascinations. I hated what the adaptations did to him. Tom numberdil is so mysterious. I loved him as a kid. I haven’t read the adventure is Tom Bomberdil either. I approve of this list. Great video
Thanks so much Epic! I also hated the adaptation of Galbatorix. Great actor, but poor casting for that character, and an altogether poorly made movie lol. I’ll definitely let you know when I get back to Malazan.
That’s always disappointing when you loved something that doesn’t live up to your memory. Hope you don’t have any this year! 😊
Yeah I know, it was tough. So far this year has been good. 😁
@ hope it continues that way! We all need a good escape 😊
@gingerbibliophile thank you! I hope so too. I love me some escape time lol.
@@BookishChas escape is important. It’s how we stay at the fun level of insane. 😅
@ yes indeed! 😂
Oh ancient Egypt? Archaeology thriller? You are speaking my language!! Sounds like another one for the tbr wishlist!
Yay! I hope you enjoy it. It was really well paced, and lots of fun.
@ I’ll keep an eye out for sales! 😊
@gingerbibliophile ok cool! I hope you enjoy it when you get to it, Kat. 😃
@ thank you! Thanks for bringing it to my attention! I’ve never heard of this author before.
@gingerbibliophile you’re welcome! I’ve never heard of him before this either.
Those are some big series there! Lol love a good corny dad joke! Ooohh! Dragons! Table top tends to be too slow for me as well. Give me a video game version if it’s gonna be a big game. I’ve got a few Salvatore books as well, though I can’t remember which ones they are. I think drows?😅 hope you enjoy em all when you fit em in! Happy reading! 😊
Thank you so much! I’m full of dad jokes, so we’ll get along just fine. 😂
@ lol it’s nice to mix in some clean humor now and then just to keep folks on their toes 😂
Interesting list! The Mule from Asimov's Foundation trilogy is another very mysterious figure (I just read Foundation and Empire), both menacing and fascinating. He's by far the most interesting character in the series I think. Have you ever read the Foundation books?
Oh ok cool! I read the first book, yes, and I’m familiar with the Mule, but only from the Apple TV series lol. 😬 I do want to finish the trilogy at some point.
Chas this was such a cool video! It was a lot of fun learning about awesome mysterious characters. I need to get into the Faraeer trilogy
Thanks Josh! Glad you liked it. I highly recommend you do, yes. 😃
I work in a book warehouse and picked it today. I saw what it was about and was like ooo sounds interesting. I opened it to a page didn’t get time to read much at all but I definitely can see the whole thing about him having a thing for death lol. I’ve noticed the books I pick sound really interesting, have cool cover art, or maybe both, but this other one - my year of rest & relaxation- was disappointing to me in ways and i have the same opinion of glad I read it wouldn’t read it again and if the concept sounds interesting to someone then go ahead and give it a read. Thank u for your review- for now I won’t read it but will just know that it’s out there with a cool cover and definitely interesting concepts!!!!
You’re welcome! It definitely has a cool cover, yes, and the concepts intrigued me. I’m glad I read it. I’m glad the review was helpful. Thanks for watching! 😁
I'm one of those who loved The Toll! It was one of my top books in the year I read it! (2022 maybe?)
Yay, another Toll fan! Thanks Natalie!
I've never really read short stories, but I have a couple of collections on my shelf that I should keep handy for when I want to take a break from the bigger books every now and then.
Yeah they really come in handy as pallet cleansers. Thanks for watching Josh!
Hi Chas- I have only read a couple of Agatha Christi books. Short stories sound interesting. Also today my copy of Talindor’s Guest arrived 💖 I hear the author is amazing and I am looking forward to the read 😎
Aww shucks, thank you Elaine! I hope you enjoy it. The short stories are quite good.
@@BookishChas my pleasure. Also would love to do another live stream with you perhaps in March or April depending on your schedule. Plus gives me time to read the book so we can chat about that and some of your other books.
@Cobaltdragon oh sure, that would be great! I’d love to.
Great video Chas 😊 I’m the same way in the Kings books. I won’t read everything on this subject but I will definitely read the books of Shinning Carrie It Christine Pet Semetary Misery ❤
Awesome! Thanks for sharing yours, Bad! I’ve heard Carrie and Christine are good too.
@ your books are so good too Chas, enjoy your process.
@badrad9226 thank you Bad! 😊
@ you’re welcome ☺️ and I think everyone can relate to you on this one too . King books 📚 have so many different opinions.
I'd warn anyone reading this collection about the Orientalism in the Adventure of the Western Star
Yes there is definitely that, but considering the time period it’s not surprising. That doesn’t excuse it, but cultural ignorance and insensitivity was definitely a thing at that time.
@@BookishChas @BookishChas oh, yeah, I wouldn't say it's a reason not to read the book but I would flag it before recommending the book - after all, some people will find it more offensive than others
@ yes you’re right, they may.
Very interesting collection, I’m not sure if I’ll ever read any of Agatha Christie’s work, but I do enjoy seeing your enthusiasm for her work.
Aww thanks! 😊 Yeah she’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I’m definitely a fan.
IMO, you left out the biggest advantage: PRICE! MM books are the least expensive of a given title.
This is true most of the time, depending on where you are shopping, so yes you’re right.
Misery is still my all-time fav King book 😍 But I am also a fan of The Stand and It too 😅
I’m really glad you enjoyed them Kris! I’m looking forward to Misery. 😁
Not liking the book but not regretting reading it is so relatable to me. I rarely regret reading a book even if I hate it. But I will say, you calling 700 page books short is a culture shock😂 Completely relate about the pet thing, I avoid dog movies because they always die😢😂
Haha yeah I get that. Believe me, when some books are close to 1400 pages, 700 seems like a novella. 😂
I read the OG editon first, and that dragged terribly. So much so I had also gotten the extended version to read after, under the assumption I'd be so enthused I'd want more. I did not want more, I wanted less.. The interminable town meetings and deeply unsatisfactory Deus Ex Machina ending turned me against it pretty hard. Not to mention Flagg suddenly gets REALLY dumb, because the plot needs him to be suddenly dumb. Swan Song by McCammon is MUCH better version of The Stand.
Thank you! I felt the same about Flagg’s ending. I’ve heard so many good things about Swan Song. I’m excited to read it.
I was just recently suggested GGK, so this is good. Thanks.
You’re welcome! I hope you enjoy it. I plan to read more of his books this year.
Hi, new subscriber here 👋🏻 I got the scythe series for Christmas and I'm so excited to read it. I've had the house on the cerulean sea for so long!! Must read it! I loved the invisible life of addie la rue so would like to read more by V E Schwab.
Hi! So glad to have you here. Addie Larue is on my list to read. I’ve heard great things about it. I hope you love Scythe and Cerulean Sea. They’re both really great. Thanks for watching! 😊
Nothing like a Chas sing along! Thank you for the tag!
Aww thanks! You’re welcome. 😊
I've read 2 of his books: I got "Joyland" for free and thought it was okay at best, and I purchased his book that's a strange combination of autobiography and writing advice called "On Writing" and thought it was very good.
Oh yes, I remember you talking about the writing book, Josh. I’ll definitely have to check that one out. I haven’t heard of Joyland.
Nothing tentatively about our buddy read. September it is!! 😝 I hear you though. I’m scared about that one too. I heard it’s one of his scariest books and I’m such a whimp… 🫣
Ok cool! I’ll be brave. 😂😂 I didn’t know it was scary as much as emotionally devastating lol.
Good to see Revival on the King TBR
Hey hey, Baron! Long time no see buddy. How are ya? Yeah it’s definitely one I’m hoping to get to. 😁
Great video Chas! I am starting a re-read of The Dark Tower, my favorite series of all time. I loved IT and The Stand, but everyone responds to books differently. that's what makes life interesting. The Institute is one of King's most underrated novels, in my opinion. Different Seasons is a must read, but besides Apt Pupil do no expect horror. I honestly think you will love Fairy Tale. Needful Things is another underrated gem! If you want to read a book by King that is magnificent but non-horror, I recommend 11/22/63. Happy Reading! 📚
Thanks so much Cliff! I appreciate all your helpful suggestions on this topic, and I respect them coming from a huge King fan especially, but also just because it’s you. 😊
Don't get too disappointed if you don't like eyes of the dragon. He did write that for his son back in the day
Ok cool, thanks! Good to know.
I learned real fast that King was not the writer for me. I enjoyed The Gunslinger because of the shortness of the story, when I got to the second book I was so irritated with how long and drawn out everything was. I do feel like he over writes his stories but hey others love it.
Yeah I totally understand that. He does overwrite a lot, even though I did feel the Dark Tower books were well paced. He’s not for everyone. Thanks Alyssa! 🙂
I liked the Gunslinger, I tried to read Paranoia but it was so dry that I couldn't read it more.
@Air_Serpent oh I haven’t heard of Paranoia, but probably one I won’t read lol.
I tried to read The Stand, But I think that might have been just the wrong book for me to try to read.
I totally understand. It’s a tough one. Definitely wouldn’t read it again lol.
In some aspects, Stephen King is a favorite author of mine. His ability to tell a compelling story while connecting you to his characters is unparalleled IMO. My issue with King is his constant use of unnecessary over sexualized statements and scenes in most of his books. If not for those he would probably be my favorite author.
Oh hey, I totally know what you mean. He does do a lot of that. Especially in his earlier stuff it seems.
I finished Dark Tower at the beginning of this year and while I really appreciated the craft and the series as a whole I think I’ve decided that King is mostly not an author for me. I may read a few additional books by him but I don’t see him being a priority author for me. I’ve also read Salems Lot, The Stand, and Billy Summers. A few maybe someday might be The Green Mile, or Pet Semetary.
Yeah he’s not going to be a priority author for me either. His crafting of the Dark Tower really is quite good. I’ve read better, but still good.
4:36 you could do a whole “who’s on first” routine with that book! I had a hard time getting into It Into what? It! Etc. 😂😂
😂😂 So true Samwise! I’d never thought about that. Too funny.
2:41 you know you’re a fantasy reader when “these are 600-700 pages so they’re not that long” is a normal sentence. Hahaha
Haha, yes indeed. Long has a whole new definition for us.
Isn’t it sad when our childhood books don’t hold up. Ugh. Oh well. You will always have the memories. Great video Chas.
Yeah it really is. I’m glad of the memories, for sure. Thanks for watching! 😁
It happens. Sometimes books just don’t work for us. But it’s good to talk about it 😉
Yep, so true. It was definitely helpful to share about it.
I hated the book American Psycho and everything about it ! So far I only have one disappointment book for this year . Lets hope for more amazing books 😊this year .
Oh wow, you and I are alike in that then Bad lol. Yes, I’m hoping for a lot of amazing books. 😁
I have a Unicorn Pusheen on my work desk 😂 Great Haul!!! 🤗
That’s so cool! Thanks Kris! 😁
Always love seeing the things that didn't work for someone, no shame in admitting that a book just didn't work for you! Bummer that the re-read was such a let-down, that is something I am always afraid of as a reread lover haha. I think for me, The Tainted Cup and A Dark and Drowning Tide were some of my most disappointing reads :(
Oh that’s too bad, Esmay! I haven’t heard of Dark & Drowning, but I loved the Tainted Cup. It’s a very tricky thing to try that particular cross of genres though, so I can understand why it might not have worked for you. This was the first time that’s happened with a reread for me, and I was really sad about it. Thanks for watching Esmay! 🙂
Hi Chaz! Hope you’re doing well. My biggest disappointment last year was The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman. I love Arthurian retellings. Just not that one 🙁
Hi! How are you? 😃 I love Arthurian retellings too, and I’ve heard very mixed reviews on that one. I’m sorry it was such a disappointment for you, but I think you’re not alone. There was a lot of hype for that one.
Right with you on being disappointed by Wind and Truth, hoping it would be a highlight of the series instead of a weaker effort.
Yeah it’s really unfortunate that it didn’t land as well.
Awesome list! Love seeing Bands of Mourning on here, and I’m so excited to try the Tainted Cup!!
Yay! I hope you really enjoy it Ben. It was so hard to choose with Mistborn era 2, because they were all good for me.
My 2024 reading year was a year of disappointment - I only read 6 books, 5 of which were mildly to majorly disappointing. But things can only go up for 2025!
Yes indeed! I’m hoping for a lot of great books for you this year Josh! 😃
Hey Chas, I was also indecisive with my video as I also try to stay positive. You did a great job for this video. I also found American Psycho disappointing, especially with the endless references to brand names, clothing, music etc... I am a simple guy with simple tastes and it was just too much. Some of the violent scenes were also sickening in the worst possible way. Hope you are having a good start to the year.
Thank you Cliff! I hope the same for you. Yes, all the brand placement was just way over the top for me too, and the violence was way too much for me as well.
Fury of the Gods might be my biggest disappointment. I still liked the book but I wanted more.
Oh yeah that’s too bad. I’ve heard a few people say that.
