Shipwrecks and Sea Dogs tells the stories of the most tragic and infamous maritime accidents in our history, and of the captains, mariners, and people who shaped that history.
The Circus Ship: The Royal Tar Tragedy
The Royal Tar was a Canadian steamship built in 1835. On October 25, 1836, the ship was on voyage from Eastport, Maine to Portland, Maine. On board were 72 passengers, 21 crew, and a large caravan of animals that were part of a traveling menagerie. The caravan included horses, lions, camels, a tiger, birds, reptiles, and even an elephant. when the ship's boiler ran dry due to a leak. When the boiler became red hot, it ignited the timber and supports above. The crew was unable to control the fire, and were forced to save themselves. Panic ensued, with passengers, crew, and terrified animals trying to avoid the fire. Animals and people jumped overboard, in a horrifying scene. 32 people and all of the animals except for 2 horses perished.

If this ship was really in such a bad state how did it pass thearine surveyors inspections as should be passed with seaworthiness certiicate before allowed to sea. Don't believe this story.
I'm not sure if you listened to the episode but I discuss the problems with Coast Guard inspections at the time including lack of experienced personnel to perform the inspections, and oversight of the inspections. This, and much more, was all in the Coast Guard's Marine Casualty Report, of which I read every word multiple times. Many changes were instituted as a result of this accident, which I also discuss in the episode.
Anyway I can get in contact with Dr. Cline? I am doing research on this ship and related history and would like to talk to him about a major theory. Thanks.

Former USN here... So this one time in Australia I was kicking it with some of the junior officers from the HMAS Stuart - they thought our officers were "snooty fuckin cunts" but us petty officers were cool.. anyway they gave us a tour of the Stuart, amazing ship.. watertight doors that you can move with one hand, computerized DC stations, a cute little armory with those little mini Steyrs.. staterooms for the enlisted, a goddamn wine mess etc... Let's go see the Kitty Hawk! I took them to my 84 man berthing. Yeah. Eighty four man. The aircon was busted too. They made it about thirty seconds. One of the Aussies threw up. That's when started telling me about how to join the Australian Navy. So it's not exactly as clean as you guys probably think lol

If they had closed the deadlights, it may have saved all their lives. The lack of training for the ballast control operators tells me they may not have ever been shown how to do it.

Government of the middle ages 100% protected their technology. Do think the venetians were sailing around handling out manuels of ship building techniques or allowing other city states/countries to look at their maps. Absolutely not. Those things were state secrets of the highest order!
