    Great explanation Kaz. For me the "aha" moment was when I realised the reason that we need to fill in the corners is really to connect the stones up so they cannot be attacked with atari. Thanks!

      These are all relatively common techniques. As you play more games, you’ll definitely run into them. Many variations do not involve capturing, but many moves aim to prevent capturing.

    G13, … F13 G15, F14 F13, White connects by capturing 3 stones F14 F13, E13 G12, ladder doesn’t work and White captures more. Didn’t see the connect and die at all.

    • @HereWeGameOfGo

      If White plays at G13, Black can make things more complicated by responding at G15. White will have to follow up with F14. (If White follows up with F13, Black can kill White with F19.) But White's F14 has many flaws -- Black can respond with J14 and will threaten two ladders.

    0:00 my first idea is g19 to falsify the eye by pulling out ...F19, H19 J19, H18 dead ...H19, F19 B19, A18 E19, C19 dead. But I missed H18 as a response making the throw-in work by asking to increase the sacrifice. Honestly ...H19 didn't make any sense in the first place^^

    Fun fact: The hane and clamp punishment was played by Honinbo Shusaku. I think the Edo period house probably arrived at the conclusion that the hane, clamp or cut if you have the ladder was correct. They got a lot of things right which were later messed up by the shin-fuseki.

    Are there any Center problems in the Gokyo set?

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! Most of these problems are on the corner or the side because that's where most of the complications arise in games. And the calculation skills gained from these exercises are readily transferable to patterns in the center of the board. Some Gokyo Shumyo problems "spill" from the side to the center, but they usually at least involve the side or the corner, not just in the center.

  • @axelkoper
    @axelkoper หลายเดือนก่อน

    the joseki sequence as shown at the end @17:20 almost never shows up in my games if i try the E17 nobi. usually instead of white 12 at C16 white plays G15 or C18. (trying to take a big center moyo or maximising the corner points. maybe you can talk about those moves in a followup video

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good questions! C18 is similar to C16 in securing the corner. Black can still play at H17 after White's C18. White makes Black's shape a little weaker, but White still has a cutting point at C16 (Black can't cut right away, of course, but it might become a problem in the future under some circumstances.) If White's 12 is at G15, I think Black should be okay just stretching/extending on the fourth line for another few moves. White does get a wall, but the cutting point at C16 is a glaring weakness in White's shape.

    Thank you! I really like how you first give "good enough" variations. As a beginner, I don't want to spend my time memorizing lots of variations. I just need easy, simple responses for now. Even though they might not be the best AI moves, I think I can get more from my studies by focusing on other areas right now.

    Am I supposed to solve these just by visualizing? Would you consider this problem for lower dan players?

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My advice is simply do whatever works for you best. If you are just starting out, then playing out the variations on the board as you think is important. If you are more advanced, then you won't need to put the pieces down in order to think, so just stare at it and think (I guess that's what you mean by "visualizing"). So either approach works depending on your level. As for the level of difficulty, the problems in this book really varies. Some are super easy, and some are super hard, but everyone can benefit from all the problems. If it's too easy, then just solve it within a few seconds and go to the next problem. I would recommend this book to lower dan players.

    I literally did this for a year straight. 13:16 I couldn’t play many games for a few years, but at work, I spent almost every toilet break pondering over a go problem or two (from WBaduk) and when I got back into go properly, joined a go club again and played games, (my first games were weird ngl 😂) but my ability to fight was just better. If you do this, you will feel like Goku when he trained at 100x gravity and then arrived on Namek stronger than ever. Lastly. Big reason why I like this channel is it is the first place I’ve seen someone talking through the reasoning of many Go Problems, I really appreciate it because I don’t always know the common shapes or, I might have to name the shapes myself to try and remember. And I really want to get better at Go Problems. Major Appreciation for the channel ❤

    I just started playing on Fox. Anyone plays the kick against me, but they almost always follow it up with the endgame hane instead of the extention, which isn‘t threatening obviously. However, I‘m not sure what’s the very best answer would be and what to think of it and since I face this move in about 5 corners every five out of four games, as if there's some kind of kyu consensus, I‘d kinda like to study 🙏

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I'm understanding your question correctly -- you are asking if the side taking the corner plays the hane, how should the other side respond? I think blocking right next to the hane move will be fine. Happy to explain more if that's not your question!

    Sorry for the double comment and if you've already covered it and I just forgot, but I'm just practising some of these joseki and am wondering if there's anything black could do with a 3-3 stone with the variation starting at 12:35 if W8 was a small knight at C14 instead.

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for asking! I think in this variation it's very similar, no matter where W8 is, because White blocked at 14. If White's 14 is at E18, then Black's 3-3 invasion could still work with some aji in the corner, even when W8 is at C14. So again the short answer is that I don't think it makes a difference in this situation. Hope that makes sense.

    • @seloranswivelton
      @seloranswivelton 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HereWeGameOfGo My life and death probably needs some work 😅 The best I think I was able to get for B in that situation of W8 at C14 was a small knight at B15 followed by some crawls on the second line and a ko of the 3-3 stone for life in the corner. I wonder if there’s a way for guaranteed life for B since W seems thick and could under cut on the 2nd and 1st lines on either side…

    This is cool! - I don't think I've ever seen any of these before. Question at 14:40 - As you point out, the three stone capture is only worth 6 points- but isn't it more important that white's central group is no longer weak? Stones 21 and 5 don't look like they're doing much work either.

      That's a great question. This is where some amateurs might disagree with AI's analysis. The three stones seem big, but they were too heavy and thus not savable, so the sacrifice is a good idea. 5 and 21 are not completely useless. They could be mobilized much later to form some shapes outside White's wall, though Black doesn't need to save them now. I know this is a vague answer, but just know for now that they are more valuable than 14 and 20 ;)

      5 and 21 are more valuable than 14 and 20! That's an interesting perspective! Maybe someone could argue 7, 9, and 17 were even "worse", but it's probably not as simple as that- they were 'used' in order to get the left side. So I guess a 'good' result is only good for a player who knows how to use it to their benefit. Personally, I have a lot to learn about "light" stones - I probably won't be able to milk 5 and 21 for their full value.

      For the removed stones the rationale is that they only had 7 liberties but White used 9 stones to remove them.

    Pleasing! Your hint on Reddit set me thinking on the right lines, but I was too impatient to see the video to work out the details.

      Haha hopefully the details aren't too complicated ;)

      @@HereWeGameOfGo In the lecture they are easy enough to follow, but I am not sure I would have read them all correctly. I did not even get as far as choosing between the hane and the clamp before I pressed Play!

      Can relate! I definitely wasn't patient enough when I first saw this problem 20+ years ago 😂😂😂
