HELP! Engines won't turn on midflight...
Even at 100% sens the aircraft is too sensitive for me. Any way to to make it even less sensitive to input? I'm using Thrustmaster T.16000M.
Thanks, very useful!
I just type a random thing on google and find this video
Wanted to say thanks for the videos. As a new guy I find your insight to be one of the most understandable for me compared to the other channels. Cheers
My stick doesn't work with the plane, i turned on the Stick in settings and i'm using the logitech extreme 3d pro. I also followed the response settings but it still doesn't work. Do you know why?
OK, seems to work fine now, don't know what the problem was. Pretty good video, I enjoyed it and learned a bit too. There is one thing that confuses me though, the Response Curves. I thought the point of the game is to experience what it was like to fly in WW1. Did the pilots then have the ability to adjust the sensitivity of their controls? I don't think so. So, it seems to me, if the default sensitivity of the controls is historically accurate, then adjusting the Response Curves would only be for easing new players into the game, just like the various "easy" settings. When someone is ready for "Real" simulation then the Response curves should all go back to the default. Or have I completely misunderstood something?
The flight sticks on WW1 planes were much longer than the ones used by flight simmers, and so some of the curve is to make it easier to make minute adjustments closer to the center of travel. Of course, you can move the whole curve up or down and make the plane fly level with the stick at neutral. Cheating? Maybe? Personal preference.
@@th3lunchb0x OK, that makes sense, thanks.
Sorry, but I found this video useless. Perhaps some sort of error has occurred, I don't know, but the video does not match the audio at all, It is as if the audio was from a totally different video and was patched to this video by mistake. The narrator says things like "This is the fuel gauge", but the video is not pointing at any gauge at all, instead just looking out the window, making it impossible to understand what is being talked about.
I'm not sure what technical issues you were having with your app or browser but I just double-checked the audio and it is correct
How many years did it take to bring that scow up to low orbit like that?
I have had Rise of Flight for 2-3 years. And now I have gotten into it. I only play when I'm in the mood for it. It is very difficult. First you have to learn to fly the planes, then you must learn to hit with the guns. It is a kind of rubbish game. The guns can block at any time. There is a delay of a fraction of a second when you pull the trigger. That is bad in a game. One gun has 500 shots, two guns got 2 times 500 shots. Why can't a single gun have 1000 shots? And the friendly planes are weak. Still I keep RoF. It is cheap. I have spend less than 10$. And I belive I learn something about flying warbirds.
Great video wish I wouldve found it sooner. Thanks
Well done Barton. I have entirely moved over to DCS, but I enjoy your videos.
I have been moving more into the F-Aß18 on DCS as the times I get to play IL2 server populations are anemic.
Damn that was close he probably had hif finger on the trigger just as you saw and pulled
So much more realistic the 109s FM since the bugfix. I hope they gonna fix the P-47 as well.
Do you know what changes were made in the 109's FM? I can't find any specifics unfortunately
@@Boslandschap1 Climbing capabilities were wrong.
Great video and very helpful mate, thank you.
Barton, very nice video, just like the 109 version. As an observation: I find taxiing almost trivially easy in both the 109's and the 190's if I aim to keep the rpm between 1000 and 1500. 1500 seems to be enough to get the plane moving from any stand still situation and keeping above 10000 seems to be enough to keep any rolling plane rolling. At the same time, keeping the rpm between those two values, as low as possible and as your sense of urgency allows, generally allows keeping the torque at very manageable levels I find. In my observation, this tends to be true for any fighter/jabo in IL2. I am not impervious to ground looping, but if I do, it is always because I am too eager not to repect staying between those almost magical values of 1000 and 1500 RPM I find.
man if you had videos on every other plane in the game there would be no need to watch multiple guides on a plane. theres a lot of birds id love to fly in the finnish/combat box server but the in-flight management is a lot to grasp and retain. you explain everything perfectly with no added bs!
You can't take anything away from the strength of a Pfalz.
Which of the 2 aircraft would you say is the superior fighter? Great vid!
Easily the P-38. There isn't much the 190 is better at. In this instance the 190 was flown better but if the P-38 had continued into the vertical he would have out climbed me and been able to drop into the control zone on my 6.
@@th3lunchb0x Alright Thanks! I really need to get this game
@@th3lunchb0x 190 better at rolling. that's it
@@th3lunchb0x Sorry I just saw this now. But I am puzzled as to why you say "easily the P-38".The Dora has better climb rate from sea level to 20000 ft., equal turn rate, higher IAS through 10,000 ft....its numbers are pretty much better in MOST categories compared to all other aircraft....The Dora must have a significant flaw (besides having a mediocre pilot such as myself,lol)...THANKS!
@jbnb3342 I wasn't flying the Dora in this video. Although the Dora has good numbers on paper, I would contest its ability to turn with the P-38, especially at lower speeds.
Mr Barton, I bow to your excellent explanation! 👍
Dora allowed that speed window to close on that last attempt. He should've kept as much speed and should've just taken a snapshot in order to have enough energy to zoom up safely. You can't throttle down to shoot and expect to still have enough energy to zoom away.
There WAS, apparently, a LAGG in the firing - sight ... ... accompanied by a great(er) "lag(g)" - (ing) in the firing of it! 😉😊😁🤣
Such an elegant aerial waltz! Frustratingly, opponents who have lost flight are sometimes so much harder to hit due to their erratic behaviour in the air. I (unfortunately) have profited from this defensive advantage more often than I'd like :)
Baron Rolfe Von Stuppe approves of your tactic. th-cam.com/video/64nvb2QUXt4/w-d-xo.html
That was funny , it seems he evaded your fire with an unintentional stall spin.
I was lining up for one more attack when his last spin put me out of position. Had to bug out or risk his buddies getting to me.
He pulled a classic vertical evade manoeuvre. I've done similar, in the past. It works best if the aircraft is heavier than the pursuer, such as a P-47 or Tempest, etc.
Excellent video and lesson, I will be sure and follow you once my new PC arrives and I get the mods I want and learn my basics. Thank you for your work.
Interesting fight and very interesting to hear your explanation of the aeronautical principles at play at each phase of the combat. It all makes sense, the harder part is having a clear picture of all the relevant factors while in combat, though this is a skill that tends to come gradually with more practice.
Yes! Knowing when to disengage is absolutely part of being a good (fighter) pilot and therefore, knowing how to disengage (i.e. creating a situation where pursuit of your extension comes at as great an energy cost as possible for your opponent) is a very useful skill. In the real life scenarios the game is aiming to simulate, the pilot's life HAS value, whereas the gamer's virtual life has effectively none. Because of this, the idea that opting for disengaging is somehow cowardice is inherently a very gamey and arguably an unreasonable stand. People play as they want of course and rightly so, but I am very much a proponent for playing as if the virtual pilot's life has value because I would argue it provides a more interesting and deeper gaming experience. That having said, I was surprised when you mentioned at 0:16 that the 109 F4 is not great in a 1 to 1 situation against a Spitfire (mk. V). The situation of this particular encounter may very well have warrented to opt for disengaging as you did, but I would tend to say the F4 is in general very competent, if not has outright dominating characteristics vs. the Spit mk. V. As far as I know, between sea level and 5000 m. altitude, the F4 has a top speed exceeding the Spit's by 70 kph (TAS) or more! Up to 2000-3000 m. altitude, the F4 has a much higher climb rate as well. Those two aspects alone should in my opinion make it possible for the F4's pilot to systematically create a situation of energy surplus, which a competent pilot would/should be able to transform into a victory or at least would/should be able to make a victory for the opponent virtually impossible. Am I missing elements in these considerations in your opinion?
The speed advantage of the F4 over the Spitfire V is more than enough to dictate a fight if used properly. In this instance that was not going to be the case. In an energy equal turn fight situation close to the deck the Spitfire V is an absolutely dominant aircraft. Perhaps I could have fought for an energy advantage but I thought the risk too high. My judgement was justified by oil creeping onto my windscreen on my way back to base.
Very interesting to hear your analysis.. It is very interesting to hear your technical decomposition of what happens as the fight unfolds and your analysis of how that relates to what can be known about the specs and characterisitics of both the aircrafts that are involved as well as to general dogfighting principles. I aim to fly consciously when I fly IL2, but it's not always easy to have the total SA and overview of all the elements that are necessary to even being able to make informed decisions and as said, nor is having a broad knowledge what plane has what relative advantages in varying situations. It is something that takes time and videos like these are great for comparing how I read and evaluate each situation with your thoughts on the fight. BTW, was that a G-14 you were flying?
Yes it was a G-14 with the MG151/20
That was very good.
Thanks, Greg!
did you post this on the forum? did they delete it lol?
I want to point out that in IL2 the Dora has a ridiculous 7-10 second delay going from idle to full power. Watch the video at about 7:05 and notice how long it took the Dora's power to come in for the climb. That delay is what allowed Barton's 38 to stay in range. He still made some amazing shots, but I think had the power come in right away the Dora would have climbed away in time. I have actually stopped flying the Dora in IL2 for this reason, the delay makes it very difficult to win in any type of scissors which hugely hamstrigs the plane in a dogfight.
I'm going to have to look into this
@@th3lunchb0x Just try it. Let the engine reach idle in flight, then try to get war emergency power ( meaning MW50 on). It will take at least 7 full seconds. Imagine how that is when you are in a flat scissors with a P-51, if you win the scissors, all the 51 has to do is go to full power and pitch up, the Dora can't follow for 7 seconds, by which time the 51 will well on it's way to getting on your six. It's a huge flaw, I can't find anything historical to back this up.
@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles So I looked into it and here's what I saw and what I think. In the D9 your prop pitch is tied to throttle so when you reduce throttle to zero you effectively feather your prop. RPM went all the way down to 1k. Boost pressure the supercharger builds is tied to RPM like in the P-40. One way to decrease boost in that plane is just to roll back the throttle. But the D9 does not have independent prop control and if it does I couldn't get it to turn on in game. So if you chop throttle in a D9 you have to wait for your prop pitch to come back to allow greater RPM to build more boost for more power. It is this way even in the K4. If you chop throttle and allow the RPM to settle it takes almost 5 seconds to come back to full power. In a P-51 you can leace the prop pitch pinned at 3k when you chop the throttle so you get full boost as fast as you ask for it. This also has the added effect of engine braking through the propeller so when a Mustang chops the throttle he will slow down faster than you will in a D9. I'm not sure if all of this is correct but that's what I gathered from what I saw.
@@th3lunchb0x Thank you for the analysis. Would you then recommend not chopping throttle in the D9 and instead only lowering the throttle?
@@StephensCustomModels Yes. It does not behave this way in DCS at all. The RPM come back almost immediately in that sim. I can't tell you which is more correct but until it changes in IL-2 I wouldn't come completely off power unless absolutely necessary and I would anticipate when I could get back on power and get into the throttle like 3 seconds early.

I think a lot of folks really underestimate a well flown dogfighting p38 because so many dudes just use them as GA fodder.
How to fly a P-38 for those guys trying to kill I Fly Central
We need to link up for some p38 action
Interesting video and well done. Great evading and some incredible long shots resulting in a victory from a disadvantageous position. While looking at the situation, I was wondering what mistake the Dora made, if any, i.e. what should he have done differently? The distances he kept seemed on the safe side; not many opponents would be able to score hits at these distances and evading the shots more actively would most likely simply result in a seemingly unnecessary energy loss. I estimate I very much would have made the same evaluation as the Dora (and consequently have ended up shot down), so I'd be interested to hear what you think.
The Dora driver made two mistakes during his initial engagement - he dove too late, leading to the tailchase during which he was spotted and lost energy trying to get into range instead of engaging at a much steeper angle, and during the chase, he was flying at the same altitude as his target. Instead, he should've closed the distance from a lower altitude to hopefully get masked against ground clutter, then popped up once he was in range. E: And then, around the 8 minute mark, he pressed the engagement when he should've reset, pushed the Lightning down towards the ground and subsequently dismantled what little energy it had left.
@@antagonist99 it wasn't that he dove too late per-se, but that he tail chased. If he had pulled into a lead pursuit immediately after split-s into the attack it would have shortened the distance he would have needed to fly to get into guns range and I probably would never have seen him. The second critical mistake he made was going too far into the vertical and getting slow at the top. You only want to get that slow if you absolutely need to, as when I made my initial prop hang against him after the first pass. Otherwise you want to keep your airspeed up and keep pressure on. He allowed me too much time to gain energy, angles, and plan my counters. When you have the energy advantage you want to keep your opponent on the back foot and keep their nose down until they get to the deck where they can't trade altitude for airspeed and then they're a sitting duck. It is much harder to do though when your opponent has an aircraft that has a better climb rate and maneuverability.
The fuel air detonations are out of control.
Well it was likely a 30mm so even if, I probably wouldn't have come out the other end any better
AGH NO!
Well, it was 2 on 1, so I would'nt be too hard on yourself for this one. Tricking the 109 in overshooting was really nicely executed and it looked like his team mate was polite enough to wait for you two to slug it out before getting serious himself :D
We all know how devious and tricky those IL2 trees can be...
Atleast these trees aren't like the ones in IL-2 1946. Still, it's hard to see trees when you're not looking where you're going lol
Doesn't the K4 only have a 30mm nose cannon? I wish there was an option for 20mm as the 30mm's ballistics don't do well for some deflection or distance shots.
Yes the K4 is 30mm only. The 30mm is great from closer ranges. It's slower fire rate and slower velocity make it a little more difficult to shoot with though the damage it does when you do hit is devastating. I tend to use a longer convergence range (500m) with the mk108 so the bullets get lobbed higher above the center mark on the gunsight so it effectively gives you a little bit more lead. Can use strategy this with 20mm as well.
Great flying & shooting! I particularly like your explanation of what you're doing/thinking, instead of keeping us guessing. I'll take as many guns as possible when attacking bombers, but if it's fighters, just the wing root 20mm cannons are fine. What's your HOTAS set-up? Stick, Throttle, Pedals, etc?
Thanks for the feedback. I definitely agree with having more firepower for bombers. You can never have too much, really, when going after the big boys but you have to balance your lethality to the heavies with your vulnerabilities to escorts. I run a Thrustmaster T16000 and Saitek Pro rudder pedals with TrackIR5.
Looks too easy. Do you have gyro effects disabled?
Nope. With the controlled tailwheel and easing into the trottle it is very easy to remain straight on takeoff in this plane.
4:23 "lets go back to right before I screwed this up." Thank you for teaching us by using your mistakes. Too often videos show only successes, and nobody learns success alone. This is similar to opcode's IL-2 videos, but here the audio instruction is helpful. I hope to see more like this.

You need to be a plane captain to be able to share the particular appreciation for the F-18's built-in ladder... or the horrors of needing to crawl in the scalding jet intakes of the aircraft for that matter :D I can well imagine discovering the F-18 in DCS must be quite special for you, it certainly seemed that way. Congrats and enjoy!
