Weatherproofing NATO's Future: Coming Considerations for Climate Security
The Institute for Peace & Diplomacy will host a panel webinar titled ‘Weatherproofing NATO's Future: Coming Considerations for Climate Security‘ which will discuss the alliance's commitments to and outlook on climate security both now and in the future on April 29, 2024 from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM ET.
Under the backdrop of NATO's recently-established Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence, how is the alliance adapting its mandate and strategies to address the evolving threats posed by climate change? This panel will explore the prism through which NATO views the relationship between climate security, energy security, and relevant geopolitical challenges from Russia to the Arctic. It will also examine Canada's role in driving NATO's climate security initiatives forward and Ottawa's strategic contributions on this front.
👥 Panelists:
• Mathieu Bussières: Director, NATO Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence
• Pauline Baudu: Non-Resident Fellow, Centre for Climate and Security; Senior Fellow, Arctic360
• Bruno Charbonneau: President, Climate Security Association of Canada; Professor and Director, Centre for Security and Crisis Governance, Royal Military College Saint-Jean

Ukraine is not the main issue, far from it, although the Kremlin has taken the opportunity to take advantage of it. Putin's propaganda has managed to, somehow, establish the Russian F. as a defender of traditional values that are apparently dear to the populist voting crowd. What has been able to inflate these parties is: - Stagnation of individual financial perspectives. Lack of perspectives for the future for too many people (includes housing). This is a complex issue, but is at the root and can be explored by populists. - Lack of control of immigration. - Too much emphasis on cultural issues that are dear to a certain urban elite (culture wars - a lot could be said here). - The Green agenda that collides with too many sectors of the population, such as farmers of so many countries. Dear Greta, the Just Stop Oil and other groups (who often support other causes, such as Palestine) are also irritating far too many (people do see what they already pay for energy). Off course this is a very simplistic summariy, but this is often what concerns people and they feel the traditional parties are ignoring their concerns. The populists are very quick to give voice to these concerns. Just want to point out that not every populist party is against Ukraine, at least not oppenly. Portuguese Chega (off course I don't support it) claims to be pro-EU and doesn't oppose Ukraine, although not enthusiastically.

There is a difference between "populists" and "thinkers". Populists created and provided the Green Party the platform into politics. Thinkers know that greening, Net Zero and controlling global temperatures are nothing but Quixotic but to the benefit of those planning to acquire the world's rich resources of farmlands, fossil fuels and minerals with "green financing" as a fence for private equity to come in. And this is what has become very clear and demonstrated in the EU Election Results. Hopefully there is still time to save the EU from the "Old Bureaucrats Club."

NATO should have no future... except its speedy demise. The phobia the western political powers have over Russia is real enough. However, within it there is a sham process by which the continued existence of NATO is sought. This is all well and good for all those on the very lucrative NATO career ladder. But extremely bad news for any of us idealists hoping for a stable, peaceful world to emerge at some point. With NATO continuing to exist by spreading some fear from one quarter or another and western powers more than glad to supply the instability required to generate even a sham fear, we will never get there.

In which terms and at what extent will the US accomplish its disingagement from Europe ? Apparently european countries have been asked to fund their own defense systems so as a consequence I guess they will be given strategical autonomy...Right ? These two sides of the new european deal look tightly linked to me. Any suggestions are welcomed :)

You all seem like nice people, and you are trying to be realists, but we all know how this will end. (1) Russia will keep every square meter that was won with Russian blood. (2) Ukraine will give concrete assurances that they will never join, or engage with, NATO. Ever. Ever, ever. (3) All Russian foreign assets will be unblocked, with every penny of accrued interest paid. (4) Other serious shit, quite possibly a moratorium on E.U. membership, quite possibly a normalization of trade between the two nations. Putin won't be compromising. At all. And if you move quickly - and in good faith - he might let you keep Odessa. You're welcome.

Why are there + 2million ukranians living and benefiting of our taxpayers money in Europe? Lots of them could go back and join their armed forces and be patriotic to the ukrainian cause and desruction? The ukranian oligarchs left their country 1 week before the russian invasion and are now in Switserland living a wealthy lifestyle. Their sons and daughters are not in the ukranian army..! Nobody talks about this..! Isn't that strange..? The Eu countries could force them out like the Eu does with the african people that try to enter the Eu. The Us and Eu use double standards when it comes to letting people in: Free entrance and help for ukranians and no help + restrictions for entry of the african ethnic people..! Talking of western hypocrasy..! Please give your reactions..!

All Russia wanted was a buffer between itself and Nato. It doesn't want Ukraine (as shown by negotiated deals with Zelensky but stopped by US/UK. It's so hard for warmongers to understand why Russia is fearful of Nato military buildup in Ukraine when JFK found it unthinkable for Soviet to install a military base in Cuba. These are strategic experts yet have so much misunderstanding of Russia (and China). Think tanks like this are never get Mearsheimer or Jeffrey Sachs on the panel for fear of lies being exposed.

Its' a war of self-defense not a war of aggression. The west has attacked Russia for years on many fronts, economically as well as militarily (bombing donbass and preparing military action there) etc. etc. Further the west has openly declared the destruction of Russia by splitting it up and install puppet regimes to exploit it's resources etc. etc. So if you start the talk by saing that Russia is performing a war of aggression, looking at all the pieces as well as comparing russian restraint with UA-T.E.R.R.O.rism etc. that would usually make me skip away. It's the presence of Mr. Petro to whom I listened many times that keeps me continuing, just that you know that such little details can make the difference. After all, there are MSM-Articles with 90% correct analysis only to end with with the usual out of context narratives that will stick to average brains due to it's placement in the article at the very end, for example.

Gentlemen, why is there no word from you on the US' role in this mess; from their involvement in the Maidan coup to the relentless expansion of NATO despite giving assurances that NATO would not move one inch eastward. Russia and Germany were doing just fine, but the US couldn't stand this and has therefore been trying for years to bring an end to this partnership. Would love to know your thoughts on who blew up Nordstream, Gentlemen. Also, how is it that the US is perpetually involved in military conflict somewhere in the world? I don't see that with Russia, China, or anyone else, but with the US it's one war after another. Well, Gentlemen??

I had recently seen a somewhat older interview by Putin where it was about the boundaries regarding Polish aggression and the negative lobbying of the Poles, Baltic states around western Ukraine against the Russian-German Nordstream 2 gas project. Putin said discussing border issues in Eastern Europe is like opening PANDORA'S BOX. -2019 A contract was concluded between US;POLAND:UKRAINE as GAS INTERMARIUM. This was a goal of the USA to damage Germany and permanently separate RUSSIA from Germany. There are also the RAND COOPERATION STUDIES against Russia and Germany. This works for the current German government, which was elected with lies. Germany will be impoverished by the sanctions, as under Brünning, because the Greens are using the sanctions policy under false prerequisites whose climate change ideology is used to drive the green energy revolution according to Graeme Maxton, Club of Rome, and Germany down to living standards of 1978.

The western powers should contain themselves, not Russia. They are the problem, far and away the problem. Their ambitions to retain their dominance across the entire globe is constantly the problem other nations face, their constant interference based upon some spurious belief in their superiority. The aggression we have seen transported from behind closed doors in Whitehall and Washington are a vicious plague upon our world. That gentlemen is where you ought properly to seek containment. The western powers have no business taking the law into their hands and quite flagrantly. Your views are clearly informed not by facts, but groupthink prejudice.

The nation that had almost no notable colonies, who did not exploit slaves (derived from the word "slavic", who were themselves enslaved) to get rich, who liberated Europe from facism, who then withdraw all of its forces from Europe voluntarily, who didn't kill & injure millions of people in Vietnam, Laos, Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Yemen & Gaza, who saved Syria from ISIS, who put an end to the 14,000+ Russian genocide in eastern Ukraine, who doesn't regime change governments all over the world, who doesn't have 190 military bases scattered all over earth, who lost 26 million dead in the most recent (4th ??) invasion of its territory from Western Europe and who finally (in general) minds its own damn business, ISN'T the nation that needs to be contained.
