So many great choices for 2025!
Omg another amazing Dino sweatshirt! 😍 Where are you getting these?! I'm supposed to read The Poppy War this month but idk if that will happen but you reminded me I need to get to it 😅 I am reading Immortal Longings for my IRL book club next month! I love that you are reading non fiction books for your read around the world- it's a great idea! Great list for the year!
I am so excited to hear about some of your nonfiction reads! The only two books that I have read from this list are Nickel and Dimed (I read it in high school so I have no idea what I would think about it now) and of course the Patricia Evangelista book. That was one of my very best reads from last year! I really am excited to see what you think of it!
oh wait! I did read Cinder maybe 8 years ago. I remember enjoying it!
Good to hear you enjoyed or at least didn't remember viscerally hating the ones of these you've read 😂 That's definitely a positive sign for me. I'm really excited about this list 😊
😊
🙏
Such a great list! The Tyranny of Merit (even though it's not technically on your list ^^') sounds super interesting - adding it to my wishlist :) Curious to hear what you think of Vespertine. I also really liked Margaret Rogerson's other books, and this one too, but I felt it got a bit repetitive with the "levels" of the magical threats. I'd also be keen to pick up The Invisible Life of Addie Larue. Let me know if you want to buddy-read it at some point in the year ^^
The Tyranny of Merit is definitely a good one. It's interesting what you say about Vespertine. I just finished it actually. I quite enjoyed it, though I do think it dragged a bit in the second half. But overall I found it generally good. I think I mostly just loved the revenant. I enjoy that trope ... device ... not sure of the word ... where there's a monster in the main character's head. I would love to buddy read The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue 😊 I'll send you an email.
So many interesting books! I'm always super impressed at how articulate you are and how you give such precise and engaging summaries of the books you read and the ideas they contain! Well done ^^
Thank you so much! That's really nice to hear 😊❤️
I'm always seated for your non-fic reads because they always slaaappp 🤩 From the perspective of All About Love sounds so interesting! I love seeing how things written history and seems to work in the current time. The Chaos Machine sounds so fascinating, and the example you had about how they had to shut down the internet itself is so crazy. I have many of the books you recommend already on my TBR but keep doing these please because that's how I find some amazing non-fics read for the future 🥰💕 I didn't read too many non-fics, honestly. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks had a lot of interesting key notes, but I didn't like the tone of the writer much & how she inserted herself. I do this the topic is important and should be discussed though!
I'm glad you're liking my recommendations. That makes me so happy 😄 I've had the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks recommended to me by several people, so it definitely sounds like an interesting read. I get what you're saying about tone and execution, but like you said, sometimes when those are lacking, you still get really interesting information, which is one of the things I like about non-fiction.
Just reminding me that I need to pick up All About Love! Absolutely gonna check out The Chaos Machine. Gotta get my hands on a copy of right to sex. My best book of the year was non-fiction- Unlikable Female Characters by Anna Bogutskaya
Unlikeable Female Characters sounds interesting. It's going on the never-ending TBR! 😂
So many great books! all about love is on my 40 Before 40 list and I'm looking forward to getting to it. Sedated and Against the Grain sound fascinating and like really important reads. It's hard to pick my favorite nonfiction, but two that stand out are The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore and A Well Trained Wife by Tia Levings.
I have The Woman they Could Not Silence on my TBR. Both of those sound really interesting 👀
Loved hearing about these. Adding a few to my future reading!
So glad to hear that! ❤️
I have been waiting for this video! I just finished An Immense World this week and loved it! I read A Woman of No Importance and Evicted a few years ago and really liked both of them. All About Love and The Urge are going on my TBR right now.
Ah! That makes me so happy 😁 Glad to hear I added to your TBR given you're always adding to mine!
😊
❤️
Love hearing your favorites! A Darker Shade of Magic is on my TBR. So happy to find someone else who likes The Night Ends With Fire! I really enjoyed it, but apparently I'm in the minority on that opinion. 🤣
Really liked a Darker Shade of Magic, so I hope you do as well! ❤️ Yeah, not sure why the Night Ends with Fire didn't hit for more people. I liked what the author did with the Mulan story 😂🐉
@@TheKatBite Me too!! I liked that it went quite a different direction than the Disney version.
Hi! I'm here from Mimi's channel 😊 I had a great time with The God and the Gumiho! I unfortunately dnf'ed the Night Ends with Fire- I was mad about how they marketed it as an adult book when its clearly not but I know others that have really liked it! A Feather so Black sounds very interesting! I have Sorcery and Small Magics and I want to get to it soon as well. I'm excited to read the new Ali Hazelwood- she's like the only romance author I plan on reading right now. We def have some overlap!! P.S. I LOVE your dino book sweatshirt!
Hi! 👋 I'm glad to hear we have some overlap. It's always nice to find people who like the same thing as you 😊 Would (obviously) definitely recommend A Feather So Black and Sorcery and Small Magics. Ali Hazelwood is one of my only auto-buy authors. Anything she puts out, I will pre-order and read almost immediately 😂 Thanks very much. I live in dino sweatshirts this time of year 🦖
Agreed! It's SO hard to rate between non-fic and fics. You definitely did an amazing job picking your top picks because I still haven't even started thinking about the books I really enjoyed in 2024 😂 The God and the Gumiho is a book I want to read SO bad. Both with how much you love it and how gorgeous the covers are. What editions do you have for Ali Hazelwood?? I love the gorgeous take of covers 😍 You really did love Fantasy last year, from what I saw from your highlights! For me, personally, I felt like Check & Mate was actually the weakest for me because... low key, I couldn't get over how he basically paid someone to find her to create circumstances for them to meet 🥲 I do think it's still super cute but... that one point couldn't get out of my head. I cannot get a real list but what I really enjoyed this past year might be Beartown, The Dragon's Republic, and maaybe JFTS?
The God and the Gumiho was such a good time. Loved it. I have the Afterlight (Illumicrate) editions for four of my Ali Hazelwood books. Was so happy to get them when they did a second release because she is one of my favourite (and auto-buy authors). I get the objection to Check & Mate, but I just loved their chemistry and how much he just wanted to play chess with her 😆 Dragon's Republic is on my 2025 TBR. I need to finish that series! I'm glad to hear you liked it ❤️
I really want to read Guns of the Dawn and The Familiar. 💕
Both amazing. Would definitely recommend (obviously) 🥰
I read A Darker Shade of Magic (and the rest of the trilogy) this year and had such a good time with it! I found the trilogy as a whole really satisfying. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
So glad to hear that! I'd definitely like to make some more progress on the series this year. I'm saving the second book for when I want a guaranteed good time 😁
I didn't intentionally participate in Neurovember this past year, but hopefully if Cat does it again this year I can! I love hearing everyone's recommendations.
It was a great event, and I think she is planning to do it again next year. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more in this category.
Sedated sounds like something I’d really “enjoy” reading. Thank you for talking about these books!
Thanks so much for watching. Yeah, Sedated was definitely "enjoyable" and enlightening.
3 chunky books! I don't have any of them on my TBR so I'll be continuing on and watching 😂 if I get spoiled, I'm sure I'll forget in a week. Love the clips from Italy as well to see the different landscape from where I'm at! I like the call out on The Final Empire, it seems like female might be more of a background setting for the plot 🥴 And the disconnect with the FMC & the world she lives in is unexpected. At 16, I 100% think you should be aware enough to realize the terrible things are happening especially when it's so close to home (literally). I ddi skip the major spoilers for Guns of the Dawn since it seemed like it's a pretty good book, and I might be interested in trying it out 🫢 I also am not a fan of writers with a repetition in the story writing, I think it's unnecessary? Or it's a poor way to build suspense -- especially if on a timeline, say hour 1 to hour 2, but it's rewritten multiple in different perspective without adding much to the world or characters... it automatically knocks off my rating for it unless I really like the characters & want more filler scenes. I love the fact that the reads are just a surprise! I didn't read any of the books so I couldn't really tell you if you'd like them or not, but I love the surprise difference in the expectations! PS. I love the dino sweatshirt LOL.
Thanks so much! I'm glad I'm not the only one who found that aspect of the Final Empire a little sus 🤨 I think suspense can be done well, but it's also probably really dependent on a lot of things including the reader and their investment in the characters. I read a book last month that did it amazingly (Jade Legacy), but in the final book of a trilogy, which was more impactful because we'd already spent 2 and a bit books being invested in these characters. The problem is that the person probably most likely to love a character and think everything they do is interesting and important is the author, and that's where feedback from editors is so important, and unfortunately sometimes lacking 😔 Would definitely recommend Guns of the Dawn. It ended up being one of my favourite books of the year. 😂 I basically live in dino sweatshirts 🦖❤️
I enjoyed the video and your thoughts. Happy New Year!
Thank you so much! Happy New Year’s! 🎆
I agree with most of your point you made in this video. I would add there is a parallel between what happening with the publishing industry and what happened to the comic book fad of the 90s before the big crash right after. Special editions and collectible issues were the big thing and people got sick of it. Readers were pushed out in favor of the "investors" who thought buying these limited runs were going to make them money down the road. Then the bottom fell out. In a time when the average American (as this is the frame of reference I have) is reading less books, do the publishers really want to overstay their welcome with these special editions when people start getting tired of subpar books that look pretty and nothing else? In my eyes, a special edition should come after you sell a couple million copies of your first few print runs. When everything is special, nothing is.
That's really interesting. I didn't know about the analogous situation with comic books. I think special editions are just becoming part of the marketing for books, the same way sometimes a pretty cover catches your eye, now it might also be sprayed edges. And to some degree the fact that they're so common makes it easier to say no because its no longer a marker of a popular and well-loved book but just a choice that someone at the publishing house made in an effort to sell more books. That being said, the FOMO is real, and I wish retailers would concentrate on doing more special editions of backlist titles rather than new releases like you said. There are so many "older" books I read this year that I loved, and I'd love to have the option to get a special edition at a not ridiculous price. I don't even care whether it's limited, I'm just shallow enough to enjoy the fact that I have a pretty copy of a book that I love 😂
Cat's idea was super awesome! I'm fairly new to the terminology of neurodiversity, so I love hearing more books representing that and I'm taking notes since I want to expand my knowledge! I didn't participate because I was a bit unfamiliar but now I have a lot of recs from yourself & others who did this 🥰 Sedated is actually really relate-able. How am I always able to get so many different recommendations from you?? Because that's 100% true, and it's something I went through, and had to break myself from old workplace. I was in a lucky enough place to be able to stop working without anything to fall back on, and I do notice that there was a huge correlation between my mental health & the toxic work place once I took a step back and left. You were SO close, and I love it!
Thank you so much for this comment! You always have such nice things to say ❤️ I got a lot of good recommendations out of this from everyone else who participated as well, so it's exciting to have even more books to read 😄 I also saw a lot of my own experience in Sedated. I've had to take breaks from work and change roles because I recognised the job was causing me mental health issues, and luckily my managers and workplace were actually supportive of that, and things changed for the better. Which just shows how addressing the obvious problem is more valuable than trying to make individual mental health the culprit, and I wish we had systems that better supported that on a wider societal level.
@@TheKatBite Of course!! Always love your videos & the recs because I'm always trying to expand my reading range 🥰 I honestly wouldn't even know where to start so having a guided recommendation like this is so helpful!! YES! I really wish managers or management take courses or even read some books such as Sedated to get a better knowledge on how to maintain their workforce. Unfortunately for me, I'm on the opposite spectrum when I spoke out about it, they kind of just brushed it off 🥴and then I was like, OK, bet, I quit 😅
These sounds like amazing reads! Have a wonderful holiday season 😊
Thanks very much! You, too! ❤️
If you think mental health is better under socialism I’d suggest you speak with a Venezuelan.
I think, like many things, it's probably less about the specific ideology and more about the economic and social conditions and the distribution of power in any given place.
Happy Holidays! I agree with you about mental health and autism. Those topics need to be discussed and out in the open.
Happy holidays to you as well! Absolutely! That's why I loved this reading challenge for surfacing a lot of those topics in my reading 😊
Not me getting this video recommended under ''Everybody wants to rule the world cover in Classical Latin (SOFTBARDCORE)'' This may be a sign
Interesting... 🤔
You did so well on the challenge. I feel "Bodies" could potentially be ticked off with Sedated and/or Untypical, but in any case, you ticked off so many prompts and I'm so glad you found reads you really enjoyed. Sedated sounds like it might have interesting crossovers with Empire of Normality, which talks about how capitalism is ultimately what led to this idea of a "normal mind" and hence impacting neurodivergent people in not so great way ^^' Thanks so much for participating in the event! I'll definitely host it again in 2025, it was so much fun :)
I had such a great time with this, and I'm looking forward to next year! ❤️ I will definitely add Empire of Normality to my TBR 👀 It sounds right up my alley because I've been thinking a lot about the term "neurotypical" lately. Typical by what measure? Says who? Is there a bell curve? This challenge has definitely made me want to read more about neurodiversity and put a lot of great books on my radar.
@@TheKatBitethat’s so great! That was exactly the goal of the event so I’m really pleased 😊
You did great on this event! Sedated sounds great and infuriating! Is there a call to action in it or is it just stating the facts of reality? Very interesting reads all of them.
I don't know if there's a specific call to action. Obviously being aware of the connection both in your personal life and in understanding what decision-makers are doing is really important. I think it's one of those things where shifting public mindset is key, but at the same time addressing the problems is a very complex operation 😔
@ Absolutely! And in some cases, we might have the power to make changes for ourselves. That’s not the case for everyone of course, but just the sense of getting back some power can be empowering (duh), meaning not sitting around and waiting for the doctor to “cure you” when you can change job or location or whatever, if you know that’s a cause of stress. Validation is powerful too.
Ooooow, I'm soooo glad you found a new favorite thanks to the Neurovember event! It makes me so happy 🥰 Can't wait for your video about the nonfiction books you read for it as well!
It was a really great readathon! Thanks for putting it together ❤️
I didn't know there was a new release from Hazelwood. Might have to read it for this season even though I have a million and two books to read before the year end 😂 Genuinely... I may or may not have been sold for The Coven by you LOL. Sometimes I just want something little mindless 🤪 Can't wait to see what you read for Neuronovember! I didn't participate on it because I was in a reading slump & I wasn't too aware about what constitute neurodivergent but I can't wait to participate next year!
I didn’t know about Ali Hazelwood’s new release either. I just saw it on her Instagram and immediately downloaded it 😂 I hope you like the Coven more than I did if you do pick it up. I often don’t mind something a little mindless, but for me it bordered on sloppy. On the other hand I did read the second one, so I’m not sure what that says about me 🤔😅
@@TheKatBite It's so short so it might be a nice palette cleanser after I finish The Poppy War 😂 I hope so too! Honestly, sometimes we just want the story to get better and it's 50/50 if that'll actually happen
Loved hearing about all these!!
Thanks! I'm glad to hear that ❤️
What a great video! You’re very eloquent, definitely adding some of these to my TBR 🙏🏼
Thanks so much! I'm glad you found something interesting 😊
I haven’t heard of most of these!! So many beautiful covers!
I hope you saw something interesting 😊
Ooh I love hearing about these books. I have only read one of these so far (Invisible Women) but Evicted sounds really good and important. Adding that to my TBR!
I'm glad you got a good recommendation! 😊
I haven’t read this book yet but it was recommended to me by a friend the subject matter is very interesting and important “Sexy But Psycho” by Jessica Taylor. Basically about how patriarchy monopolises women’s trauma against them.
I have that on my shelf! I haven't read it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Glad to know others have also enjoyed it 😊
This is such a fantastic video! The Value of Everything is going on my TBR. I also loved Evicted and Invisible Women. You are so good at analyzing these books. Thanks for tagging me in it 😊
Thanks very much! And thanks so much for being the inspiration for this idea ❤️
How do you come out with book after book recommendations that are so amazing to help me broaden my knowledge? You already know I'm interested in Invisible Women, but I'm now interested in The Value of Everything & The Tyranny of Merits the most from this list. Just from the synopsis of all the books as you go through it, it's already giving me a bit more to think about.
Thank you so much! That's kind of my goal. I'm hoping that everyone who comes across the video comes away with at least something to think about even if they can't/don't pick up the books ❤️
I remember hearing about Evicted some time ago but I forgot about it, but now it is back on my TBR. Invisble women sounds like a book I should read! Great video :)
Both great reads. I hope you enjoy them 😄
So many interesting books. Great video. Thanks.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊
Invisible Women is such a good read but also so frustrating and maddening. All About Love is on my 40 Before 40 list and I'm really looking forward to getting to it. The Cost of Sexism sounds really good! Thanks for all the recommendations.
Yeah, Invisible Women was incredibly impactful. I think it was my gateway book to a lot of non-fiction books centring women.
I've been loving fantasy books -- especially ones that make me kick and laugh. I'll be adding Sorcery and Small Magics to my TBR! This is the first time I've seen your edition for A Fate Inked in Blood. Your copy is GORGEOUS 😍 I haven't read it even though it's been on my TBR for so long -- I was supposed to read it with Cat but my life went all over the place 😂 I definitely thought that Bride was going to be on the list because at the beginning of the video, I kept eyeing your copies of Ali Haelwood books.
Sorcery and Small Magics is so good! Would obviously recommend any on this list, but I really loved that one, and I think it's a great cosy read especially at this time of year 🥰
I really love you going through all of these recs, and also into specific details as to which book has which points that stands out. From your list, the books that really stand out to be is The Right to S. (trying not to get sent to YT jail because that happens too much LOL) & Invisible Women. I love seeing the statistics, and data and how that would relate (or not) to us. I can definitely see how things were designed and tested mostly on men and as a result, females often get missed in safety features. I remember there's one data point I saw a long time ago, is that seat belt were designed with maximum safety for specific heights. The average women is about 1-2" shorter than the specific height safety! TLDR, data relating to how the world is probably inherently sexist is an interesting fact! Definitely WILL pick this book up. Also the way you articulate all of the synopsis of the book is amazing 😩🧡 I feel like I got such good ideas of all the books and what I can expect going into it
Thanks so much! I'm glad the video was useful. Yeah, Invisible Women is so eye-opening and infuriating 😠
Kat recommend me some books to read on the next year ☺️
Any of the books I mentioned in this video!
@TheKatBite ☺️
The only one I've read in here is A Fate Inked in Blood. I agree with you that is was very predictable, but I (mostly) enjoyed in nonetheless and I'll be curious to pick up the next book! I really want to read The night ends with fire too, it sounds so good!
The Night Ends with Fire is great! Would definitely recommend, especially if you're a fan of Mulan 🐉
Hi Kat! I tagged you to do 'The Book Murder Tag,' if you are interested in doing it. It was created by Noah at The Book Wyrm. The video is on my channel now. Great video by the way.😺
Thanks very much for tagging me! I'll check it out 👀
Thanks for the recs! I've added a few of these to my holds list at the library.
That's great to hear! I hope you enjoy them 😊
A few of my fav feminist fiction books Historical -The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave -Snowflowet and the Secret Fan by Lisa See Dystopia -The Core of the Sun by Johanna Sinisalo Fantasy -Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan (check TWs) -She Would be King by Wayétu Moore I have read "A Vidication of the Rights of Women" by Mary Wolstonecraft Shelley, and we still have the same problems she discussed in 1794. Things have changed and some of it no longer applies, but a lot of it higlights the same repackaged sytemic issues. "Witchcraft" by Marion Gibson and "The Barbazon: the hotel that set women free" by Paulina Bren are my next two nonfics.
Thanks very much for the recommendations! Looks like a lot of interesting books there 👀❤️
I read Invisible Women a few years ago and it was really important! Great list!
Thanks very much! ❤️
All those books sound so interesting. Invisible Women have been on my radar for a while, but I have a few feminist books on my bookshelves already that I should get to first ^^' I haven't read her latest works, but Mona Chollet is a brilliant author too - I think most of her books have been translated into English, in case you want to check her books out.
Ooh! Thanks for the recommendation! I'll look her up! ❤️
