Samson François plays Chopin Ballade N°4 op.52 (restored audio and video)
In the beginning of the year, a documentary on Samson François was broadcasted on French TV. This performance is already available on TH-cam but the audio in it is really deteriorated so I thought it was good to upload it again !
This is wonderful material for us, classical piano enjoyers. This performance is full of liberty and inspiration. The video let us appreciate SF incredible finger work and ease at the keyboard.

Liszt : Piano Sonata in B minor (Shura Cherkassky)
Recorded live in 1965 in Salzburg A magnificent recording of this sonata despite the poor recording quality. Shura Cherkassky was a phenomenal pianist whose talent was multiplied during concerts. This recording is inspired, powerful but also very lyrical. SC craves the musical speech in a unique way creating a without equal rendition of this sonata. This is one of the best recording of this son...

Beethoven : Piano Sonata N°32 op.111 (Eric Heidsieck)
Let me introduce you to what might be my favourite performance of Beethoven's final sonata. This sonata is in 2 movements. As is often the case in Beethoven's late works, we escape from classical form. Beethoven claimed at the time that he did not have time to write a third movement. However, here we find a perfect balance between these two movements, where the duality. the opposition of two em...
Ravel : Piano Concerto for the left hand (Samson François)
Ravel's concerto for the left hand was composed between 1929 and 1931 and dedicated to Paul Wittgenstein, an Austrian pianist and soldier who had his right arm amputated during the First World War. It has only one movement and was premiered by its dedicatee in Vienna in 1932 in a version arranged for two pianos. The premiere will tarnish the relationship between the two men because the pianist ...
Beethoven : Piano Sonata n°8 « Pathétique » (Ivan Moravec)
Here are some comments from the site musicologie.org about this sonata : Written in 1798-1799 and published with a dedication to Prince Carl von Lichnowsky, the generous "protector" who, for years, provided Beethoven with an income that allowed him to devote himself more freely to his art, this sonata in C minor, Op. 13, remains one of the most popular of its composer's works. "Because of its d...
Beethoven : Piano Sonata N°30 (Louis Lortie)
France Musique comments about Beethoven Piano sonata n30 : Beethoven composed his last three piano sonatas between 1820 and 1822, while working on the Missa solemnis. The monumentality of the vocal work is contrasted with the more modest dimensions of the piano scores, which are no less ambitious in their conception. But here the invention does not need time dilation. What is striking, on the o...
Ravel : Gaspard de la Nuit (Beatrice Rana)
Comments from the score (RayBird) : Published in 1909 Gaspard de la Nuit is considered to be the most beautiful, masterly and challenging of all Ravel’s œuvre for piano. The poet Aloysius Bertrand(1807- 1841), alchemist of irony and speech, whose only collection, Gaspard de la Nuit had just been reedited in 1908 by the Mercure de France, seduced Ravel, who immediately and dramatically changed h...

Chopin : Piano Sonata N°3 op. 58 (Emil Gilels)
Chopin's third sonata n°3 op. 58 is his last and most lyrical sonata. While the 1st one can be assimilated to a style search, the 2nd possesses a dark and somehow tragic atmosphere. The 3rd sonata, on the other hand, has a more romantic character. Some of Chopin's most beautiful melodies can be found through the piece. Gilels approaches the piece in a quite unique way, taking the 1st movement a...

Was this live?? He plays it on a way I never heard it before... His voicing is unique in this one... Very creative interpetration by Trifonov especially in 1:58 first time I see accent in this passage!!! Very interisting at all... the use of pedal is mesmerizing aswell.

By far my favorite rendition of those pieces. The slow tempo can be surprising at first, but after a few seconds you quickly understand that this choice allows Moravec to express each note and each indication absolutely perfectly. His expression here is unmatched in my opinion. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for posting this with the music. I was searching for song 4 after hearing it as an encore at a recent piano concert (Dmitry Sin, waiting until after concert to ask him what it was). How amazing to find it with the written music as well. So beautiful. Thanks for the brief history of the piece as well, which adds sadness to the beauty, but also makes it even more beautiful. THANK YOU!

i like how claire de lune is played slightly faster ever so much, it takes away some of the loftiness that the piece has garnered and gives it more of a dreamy passing-by quality which is quite refreshing.

Very well professionally executed performance. Great control , touch , colors. There are many beautiful moments in her playing. Yet, I'd often catch myself thinking that some of Ms. Rana's phrasing, rubato and dynamics choices were absolutely foreign to the pieces. They were so exaggeratedly presented that it felt like I am not listening an "impressionism" but rather an "expressionism". In my modest opinion there's no better performance of this cycle than Richter's live recording of his recital in Prague in 1965.

  • @classicallpvault8251

My favourite work by Debussy, from the time when he wasn't yet an impressionist but working in a late Romantic idiom. The harmony in these works is still well within the confines of (extended) tonality and not using the sort of tonal ambiguity and non-tonal harmony based on the whole tone scale that became prominent in his later work, although especially the menuet uses a really progressive form of tonality already hinting at impressionism.
