Irish dance 💃 like 👍 it
Actually it is an English dance! Tony Slinger, an Englishman, wrote the original; I wrote this version. (Well, actually, my parents were Irish, but I don't think that makes it an Irish dance!) 🙂
This was, so great to see, it brought back memories of watching the Gloucestershire Morris men many years, ago, This is so good, to watch these great dancers and the horse dancing alongside, realy great
That's so nice! Thank you for the upload
Glad you like it!
What a great lesson!! Just what I was looking for. Thanks! ❤️🎶
Nice tune!
Fantastic video - thanks so much for sharing.
Beautiful
Lovely to see Morris Dancing to a very patriotic Irish song.
Yes, great tune! I have added the background to the tune selection and name to the description below the video.
How fun
It is NOT an Adderbury dance...only in the Adderbury style..Sort of!
Yes, that is what it says in the description! I hope that is OK. We thought we were doing better than "Sort of"! We will try harded! I take my teaching from my copy of Janet Blunt's notes and from the booklets you have produced over the years. Thanks for a great tradition!
Gimme that old time religion!
😍
How can I get this song for a dance class I’m teaching?
Hi Amanda, You can do the dance to any 32 bar tune. Jigs may work better, but reels, marches or polkas would work as well. You can get some great tracks from these bands: The Committee Band All Blacked Up Steamchicken Token Women The Community Dances Manual CDs are also useful if you want tracks suitable for lots of dances.
Nicely done. A joy to hear the tune played properly!
Notice,,, No Dogs about ? Who could blame them,,,
The dogs are all behind the camera.
Thanks for filming the wonderful dancing.
I really appreciate that the continuing tradition of Morris Dancing is being recorded. Love it.
Wonderful! So lovely to see people keeping up traditions.
New to me. Nice dance but I didn't like the speed up at the end very much😊
Thanks! You can find the history and instructions at contrafusion.co.uk/Morris.html#Stuck We finish a lot of dances with double-speed sticking. The dancers enjoy it and it provides a climax to the dance, usually getting a good response from the audience. I'm sorry you don't like it.
Nope. CEROC, Le Jive was and is supposed to be a fun, "Partner dance" where the man leads and the woman dancer follows. There are so very few things Western men and women can do well together or just tolerate each other. Traditional forms of fun partner dancing was one of them. I loved CEROC in Chicago, but the talented teacher Cassie H stopped teaching, now the main activity here in Chicago is to sit on a bar stool , drink beer and watch our professional Chicago sports teams that aren't any good. Wow - how romantic and no fun that is! How about bringing back traditional forms of partner dancing where the man leads and the woman follows. Americans, British, Australians used to be good partner dancers way back in the 1940s and a brief Disco revival in the 1970s. Now Western, American guys can't dance. I don't considered "Twerking" dancing - that's dancing alone which leads to masterba****** , sex alone. No thanks.
Yes, it is a partner dance, I just happen to have two partners. Yes, I am leading them. They don't know what move I am going to do next. Yes, it is a shame that Ceroc in the USA didn't last long. There is plenty of partner dancing around - check out Salsa, Tango, Two Step, Swing, West Coast Swing, etc. There is bound to be lots in your area. Also Country Dancing, Contra Dance and Square Dance - all great fun!
@@johnthesweeney Thank you so so much to responding to my (rude, disrespectful) comment. I humbly apologize. Mea Culpa. I loved CEROC/C'est le Roc here in Chicago, this was about 25 years ago. My social life never recovered and I am now, apparently sentenced, doomed to be a single, no wife, no girlfriend, even the Chicago Escorts (~ $800 an hour and they also want Uber $ fees). God bless you sir and your dance partners. Once again, I humbly apologize for my rude comment Jaye Left behind in Chicago where our city stopped partner dancing
Loved watching this dance. Thanks for sharing
I live in East Kent (Ramsgate) and I have never seen this. I guess they hide out in disused carparks.
It's all around you! Check out Wantsum Morris to see where they are dancing near you. Go to Broadstairs Folk Week to see hundreds of dancers.

I attended a dancing holiday in Barcelona many years ago, and John & partner were the BEST teachers without a doubt! I danced together with John and his lovely partner (he was leading both of us) in a disco on one of the nights out. I had never done that before, so he only told me when he saw I was a bit nervous:"don't think, just follow" . It was great! But the next dance he included another lady, yes! 3 of us being led by John.! He was giving me a few tips while dancing... It was just amazing! After, some guy asked me how I managed to do that, and I said I didn't do anything! It was John...The best teacher I've ever had. Thanks! 💜💜💜
Thanks! I'm glad you had fun! I hope you are still dancing and having fun; Karen and I certainly are!
@@johnthesweeney Hi John! What a nice surprise to find your channel on TH-cam! I subscribed, of course . I'm back to Spain for good and I miss modern jive so much. Unfortunately, there aren't any proper classes around , so I'm doing salsa now. I love dancing, so it's okay but not the same. Glad you two are going strong! Take care. 💜 from Spain
Bells and hankies ftw!
For The Win! Absolutely! 🙂
The tune is familiar if not the dance. Do you have a name for it?
The tune is The Maid and the Palmer. We actually dance Chilham Square to a different tune now since we use that tune for another dance (Broad Cupid).
Awesome, Thank you!
What is the name of the music?
Checking with the band...
Thank you for keeping English traditions and culture alive in face of increasing efforts to extinguish it.
Who is trying to extinguish English traditions and culture?
Lovely demo, John & Karen! I know that tune, but can't remember its name? Can someone help?
Never mind, I just remembered! Crested Hens (les Poules Houppée).

Kentish man in NZ , Lovely to see English folk dancing is still going strong
This is wonderful, it’s so nice to see our culture and traditions being upheld in a world where they appear to be rapidly being subsumed by other cultures and traditions not native to England
this dance is not native to england, it comes from continental europe and it's named after west african muslims
You mean the Moors. I don't think so.@@Chutley
@@Azzsiamoamilano Morris dancing isn't 'Celtic' in origin.
@@Chutley The earliest reference is from the Burgundian court of 1427-28. Evidence suggests the dance is of French and Flemish origin. First recorded in England in 1448. The morris dance developed from these early court entertainments which were quite different to what we see today. And it is very much English.
Oh my goodness me so much to learn but very helpful video I can’t even get the steps right at the moment…I’m also a border dancer so keep stepping in right every time so I’m finding this very helpful thank you. I’ll keep trying and practicing 😊
I love the dancing horse😍
A Kentish Hooden Horse: hoodening.org.uk
Nice to see people keeping old English traditions alive. Many people think only Scotland, Ireland and Wales have their own distinct cultures.
The rubbish bins in the background do not add to the ambience, but bravo to the intrepid dancers. They are keeping English culture alive.
Thanks!
It just needs a few more hankies and jingly bells but its going in the right direction
We normally stick with two hankies per dancers - maybe we should try more! I used to have 96 bells on my pads, but they started to hurt my shins.
More would be good, lots more, maybe louder bells to@@johnthesweeney
Разве можно в церкви плясать? Что-то невообразимое...
"Is it possible to dance in church? Something unimaginable..." Only once a year - one dance - to mark a special occasion - the blessing of the Hops so that we can have more beer next year!
Also, this is a Church of England church so things are pretty relaxed on such matters and similar.
Ну, не буду соваться в чужой монастырь со своим уставом. Sorry.
This church was stolen permanently on the death of Queen Mary Tudor. It's no longer consecrated.
Нет, вообще я не против веселья и танцев. Я православная. Поэтому мне странно.
Thanks, very nice concise video.
Thank you! 🙂

Thank you for this video. I’m trying to learn and the ancestors are probably laughing at my goofy uncoordinated self 😂😭
They all started uncoordinated as well - persevere and all will be well! Have fun! 🙂
Thanks for putting these together!
Very helpful John. Many thanks for posting. 👍
I did Ceroc here in Chicago ~ 20 years ago I Loved It. Sigh, I never recovered from our talented, but a bit crazy CEROC dance teacher stop doing this. It's the perfect dance. I got OK at Salsa, but CEROC is better for US middle age British guys. Is there any CEROC in the USA? North or South America? Please contact me directly, I'd like to invest my time and $ in spreading this joy. In case people haven't noticed yet, American men and women are not getting along at all - it's never been worse. Partner dancing is beautiful - most girls, women love to partner dance, with American guys... someone is going to have to make them learn to dance. So mothers, sisters, girl friends, sorority leaders - lets make the men around you learn to dance.
Sadly the US clubs didn't survive. There used to be half a dozen on this list: modernjive.com/USA.html Now there is just one contact and I don't know if she still organises anything. Sorry.
@@johnthesweeney Thanks... sorry, I'm very, very sorry I have to live in this Amurikun country where our people can't dance and have really no social skills besides watching TV, following Amurikun FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL 5 days a week. And our national sport of American Football shouldn't even be called "football". It's a derivative of the British sport of Rugby not Football/Soccer where the players actually kick the ball with their foot. Our stupid sports writers just gave it the wrong name! Typical. Thanks John Jaye Left Behind In Chicago USA where our people can't dance and our office women are mean, no fun and have no romance in their lives.
Used to seeing mixed Border sides but not seen many Cotswold sides mixed.
I think there are quite a few these days. We used to be a men's side, but low numbers meant that in 2015 we went mixed and never looked back.
