Alta Live: The Problem with Ghost Towns
Part history lesson, part amusement ride, ghost towns of the American West reveal only a small, palatable slice of their true story. If we were to really listen, what would the ghosts of abandoned towns like Bodie, California, whisper? According to author Lauren Markham, the Golden State’s forgotten boomtowns hide a history of killing, forced displacement, and environmental degradation-painful truths ignored by most tourists who swing by for a selfie. As Markham discovered on a road trip, they also may hide actual, well, ghosts. On Halloween eve, Markham joins Alta Live to examine the true spirit of California’s ghost towns and share some spooky tales of Golden State ghouls. Join us for this eye-opening peek into the past.

Alta Live: Mapping the West

The American West has been the subject of speculation, scrutiny, and debate for centuries, and the maps that follow give us a glimpse of that history. In a pullout folio for Alta Journal’s Issue 29, author and historian Susan Schulten compiled numerous maps to demonstrate this, beginning with a map dating from 1540 by German scholar Sebastian Münster to a racially charged layout of San Francisc...
Alta Live: The Elusive History of the Oregon Trail

Alta Live: Smokey Bear-More Than An Icon
มุมมอง 35หลายเดือนก่อน
An American symbol as recognizable as Mickey Mouse and Santa Claus, Smokey the Bear isn’t even named Smokey the Bear. Technically, he’s Smokey Bear, and over the past 80 years since his invention by the Ad Council at the end of World War II, America’s symbol of forest fire prevention has taken on a life-and death-of its own. In Joshua Wheeler’s eye-opening feature for Alta Journal’s Issue 29, t...

"Colored Television" author Danzy Senna sits down for a conversation with CBC host John Freeman and special guest Porochista Khakpour. In recent times, television and film have relied heavily on nostalgia and repetition, leading us to pedestrian on-screen material. You might expect, then, that contemporary novels of Hollywood would need to be broad, bland. Danzy Senna’s fifth novel, the satiric...

I really appreciate your efforts! I need some advice: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How can I transfer them to Binance?
I am friends with someone who was there at the Westwood compound in the mid to late 90s. He was CC's apprentice and one of the leading people to disseminate the teachings of Castaneda and Don Juan. He changed his name (his new name was given to him by CC) and completely broke contact with all his family and friends for several years. Since, he has reintegrated into society and is leading workshops on shamanism, Tensegrity, and Western medicine, which he is trained in. Recently we ran into each other and we agreed to meet up. I asked him so many questions but our time was limited. We agreed to meet again the next time he travels to my area in a couple of months. To Geoffrey and any real journalist who wants to delve deeper into the mysteries of the cult, this is my suggestion: Snooping around and asking questions will only get you so far. If you truly want to learn more about the inner happenings behind the hedges at the compound in Westwood, you might want to start attending some of the seminars that the Cleargreen group present around the world. Become acquainted with those running them, and gain their trust. It will take time, but eventually you should be able to uncover some hidden truths. On the point that the writer went to Tula Mexico trying to locate real Yaqui sorcerers, then traveling nine hours to meet with one who hadn't heard at all about Castaneda's Don Juan, that's not surprising and doesn't disprove anything. For one, I believe Tula is quite far from where the Yaquis live in Sorora state and southern Arizona. And given their economic level and levels of exposure to the New Age Movement and intelligentsia in the US I highly doubt that any Yaqui person, even less a sorcerer living in a remote village in Mexico, is going to have heard of our CC and his Don Juan Matus.

What if there is a house on it what happens to the people that live there do they get paid for what ever it is you find there?
Hi from Pahrump NV
The condor restored? They where zoo breed and released and have to be feed or starve to death. Bringing back grizzlies is stupid Yosemite will have very many hikers killed these people run up to black bears, and the only reason we r over run with black bears is because u make it almost impossible to hunt them with all the laws.

Thank you…fascinating. So glad I visited Pioneertown when it was natural and quiet and still Pappy’s…so many good desert memories.
People like this are so stupid it make me sick. Look at the blithering fools.
Idiots, Are either one of these idiots going to volunteer to let one of their children be the first child killed by a Grizzly.
I had the biggest crush on Griffin when he played the creative writing teacher in My Girl. I was only like 9 but already had good taste.
Didn’t even ask the guy how they would live in California. The historic salmon runs when grizzlies were around are 10% of that and DECLINING. The old growth oak and redwoods are almost all replaced by exotics like eucalyptus and young trees so no acorns. They aren’t deer specialist like wolves or mountain lions so that’s out. Guy is a fanboy because there is no way😂… trash, dogs, livestock, and the occasional touron is all that’s left.
This whole thing gives me NO new info!!!!!
You already knew that one of the missing witches may have been involved in selling CC's compound ten years after they went missing? And you already knew that there may have been a hole in the trunk lock of Patricia Partin's car in the desert?

You guys are nuts bringing bears back is an stupid idea we had dammed all the rivers everywhere we terraformed the state this guys we need to fix other more pressing issues that bring bears back. Have you seen how the grizzlies attack omg this guy is brainwashed about the system it’s crazy. I saw a mountain lion once it’s crazy omg !!!
Incredibly interesting.

WH, you are not a stranger to us, you just don't know us 😢😊😂❤
They you Ladies nice video!
Finally had time to watch this. Great interview.
Californian grizzlies - they survived in ca for 1000's of years. Humans hunted and killed them. (For pleasure) A rancher in Kern County claimed a grizzly bear killed some 200 sheep in a single night. The conflict grew so tense some counties offered bounties to kill the bears. Eventually, California grizzlies-a subspecies of brown bear-were hunted, poisoned, and trapped to local extinction. The rancher never mentioned that arrows were found in his dead sheep, his story was bullshit.. There has never been a human killed by a brown in CA.. a Cal black bear has been documented killing and devouring a woman-inside her home. the Downieville incident is now the first documented fatal attack by a black bear in California history. In the 1850's for pleasure..... people in ca would go to the bear and bull fights, which was the main event, with an undercard of cockfighting and dogfighting to whet the crowd's appetite for death. Next time you invest in a bullish market maybe you should find out where Wal Street got there logo. I look at the Ca flag and think of we did and how we justify killings- ** Bring home the brown bear, they are not the problem... miss-informed humans are Humans caused there demise... The bear was never a threat. You can lie about history - in all facets - Politicians are masters at this. You can lie about history --- BUT YOU CAN NOT CHANGE HISTORY

Pretty crappy "journalism." I was a student of Castaneda's from 1995 until his death, having attended numerous private sessions with him, dinners, etc. The website I put up in 1999 -- sustainedaction.org/ -- is the most extensive repository of info about the missing women on the Internet. Here's my review of Geoff's piece: sustainedaction.org/?p=1093
Good interview into the inner workings of Goodwill! The curating teams that process the goods and maximizes the earning potential item for GW, is a comforting, feel good feeling that monies generated for this 501c non-profit corporation goes toward supporting jobs for people that often times are passed over/overlooked. Hats~off!☺️👍🐿

I'm an introvert that has tried extroversion. People suck the energy out of ya. I had to retrieve. Her mind is very fast. I feel exhausted after watching this video. It's nice to give of oneself to others but I hope she won't burn herself down for the cause. Don't think she's just making "minimal wage" but certain things demand a high personal cost.
