We love family friendly, lightweight, travel trailers! Are you a family who loves the outdoors? Do you like to camp but are done with sleeping a tent? Weekend camping meal planning got you down? This channel is for you!
We are a busy family who wants to help you get outside and have an adventure. A scientist by training, Bree got interested in travel trailers while we were searching for ours (Ben might call it an obsession). Whatever you call it, that research turned into a website and then youtube channel when Bree realized that maybe someone else would listen to her talk about travel trailers! We both love to cook but Ben has mastered the art of organizing our meals and is excited to share those tips too. Isaac is here to remind us that the point is to have an adventure together.
Tune in every other week for more trailer tours and newbie mistakes as well as camping cooking tips.

Alto Awning Set Up

We decided to record ourselves setting up our awning for the Alto. This is the style of awning common on tear drops which requires you to slide the awning through a rail and use a series of poles to set it up. The awning is actually awesome once it is up but we have only done it a few times and didn't have a good system when we filmed this. Enjoy watching all our mistakes so you don't have to m...

Family Hike at Oaks Bottom - with a Bald Eagle!
Hi there, I am looking at a 2020 version of this trailer. I am also looking at intech and the Pleasant Valley Nucamp 400. I am wondering why you went with this trailer over the others?
Those are all great. We picked the alto for tow weight which allows us to tow with our current car and the bunk which allows us to sleep 3 and still keep the dinette set up.
nice video, thank you for sharing. Do you know if this is meaningfully taller overall inside than the T@B 320s? I am 5'11" which means I have to duck my head in the TAB, a non-starter for me.
Thanks for watching. The alto is quite a bit taller than the tab 320 (I believe the interior of that one is 5’9”). My husband is 6 ft and has no trouble standing in the trailer. The bathroom is up a couple of inches so that is a little bit tight. Otherwise it’s a great fit for us both.
Thanks for the tour. Still enjoying it?
Yes we still love it! We average about 45 days a year camping including some 2+ week trips and it has been awesome.
Made in china ???
Los Angeles
Great Review! One correction, however... The dining table in this model is Not on a Lagune mount. It is the "fixed" type mounted to the wall at either dining table height or at bed/couch height. The leg folds when you want it at the lower height. I love the pace at which you showed us around, giving enough time to get a good view of everything without drawing it out!😊👍
You did not live up to your name, but I had fun watching you all.
Great video, has the camper been trouble free?
So far so good!
With the bunk, you can’t use the stove correct ? I couldn’t tell what black part was covered
Yes it covers the stove. You can use the sink. For us that is only an issue when we are camping in the cold or are doing a quick overnight. Otherwise we usually cook outside so we don’t have to take the bed down every day.
Great Video. thank you! Which trailer did she choose?
Thanks! She picked the Happier Camper. There is a video on that too.
Great Video. Very interested in the Travel Trailer Guide. Went to the link it says there is no website?? Please advise.
That’s crazy!!
Damn!!!
Simple eview; easy on the camera. Not everyone is seeing this from a phone. I'm viewing on my office 23 inch monitor and it's dizzy. Video captions are everything. As for Little Guy Max; Should have a small corner sink inside that Wet Bath to spit inside of when brushing teeth and shaving. Nasty having to use the kitchen sink. And they need to enclose the belly of the trailer and add 12V heat pads to holding tanks. That is my hold back on this trailer and I'm leaning towards the Tab 400; but like the size of Little Guy Max. We do moderate winter camping. An enclosed belly is key. Also no critters can get up in there that easily with an enclosed belly. What i'm asking for is not much at all when campers half it's price bring a few items that make life easy in there.
I would like to have panoramic window in the bedroom, like one in the dining area
Me too! Best panorama is with the raised roof models of the Alto but that one didn't quite have all the features we wanted. I do find that the window along the side where our heads are is quite nice and you can see out very well. However, you can't see up which would be nice. Maybe they will add a skylight someday :).
Hello..just bought a new Bushwacker..on the first camping trip I attempted to use the heater The new heater smell triggered the smoke detector and now I’m scared to use it lol Did you have same experience? Thanks
Oh no! That doesn’t sound great. Michelle said the heater did smell the first time (ours did too on a different trailer model) but not enough to set off the smoke detector. Might want to have that checked.
Can you tell me exactly how big the mattresses are?
They are a bit wider than a twin at 42" x 78". If you remove the back for the dinette (which is what Michelle did) the main bed becomes just short of a queen in width.
I REALLY appreciate ALL the info you have provided! You have really helped me in my searching! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! What camper did you end up choosing?
I have ordered many of the items on this video and your other “essential items” video. You’re link for the lock coupler indicates it is a 2 5/16”. Is that what you got for your Alto and do you know if all the Altos are the same configuration? We are about to go pick up our F2114 at the end of the week and I would love to get this lock. Thank you for your very informational videos. So helpful! I would love to see more videos regarding your experiences with your Alto and other items or modifications you may have done.
So exciting! Yes we have the 2 5/16” hitch lock. Glad the videos are helpful! I have so many videos I’d love to do. I started a new job and we moved houses in the last year so I’ve been preoccupied but hoping to get more videos up soon. Thanks for watching!
I was comparing this to the Tab S 320. I don’t know about the price comparison or the availability of Alto in my area of Florida. Tabs are everywhere and they are well-made but this is interesting too. I would be towing with a Subaru Outback XT rated at 3,500 lbs.
Tabs are great! They are definitely easier to find with much shorter wait times. Tab didn’t work for us because there are 3 of us and the larger tab 400 at that time did not have a bunk bed (it does now!) and it weighs quite a bit more than the alto so we were not comfortable pulling it with out Outback. The 320 series should work well though.
Hello again! Just pick my 2023 Bushwacker BH, just wondering how long your 12v fridge last for in battery power? I love all of you custom upgrades.
Awesome! Hope you have a great first outing! The battery the camper comes with lasted about 2 days with the fridge, heater and water pump in use. Remember you can’t draw these batteries to 0. If you do they won’t last very long. That’s what happened to Michelle last year. She didn’t realize that and the battery was dead when she started camping this summer. Michelle just switched her batteries to lithium to get a longer time off grid. We are heading out today on a long trip together, I’ll let you know how the new batteries work!
Did your trailer come with a hitch on the back for your bike rack?
Yes it did. Thanks for watching!
Where did you get the door for the cabinet where the microwave was? I want to remove mine as well.
That was custom made by a friend. Thanks for watching.
How much is the total length from the back bumper to the tip of the tongue jack? I have 20 feet driveway and can I park this in my driveway?
It is 18 feet from bumper to tongue (the part that connects to your hitch ball). So it should fit in your driveway. You should always measure yourself of course!
Where is the stove and sink ?
Stove and sink are at the front of the camper, to the right as you enter the door. They come with a mat covering them so are hidden in a lot of the video.
See at 1:34 and 2:55
Love the personalization 😍 and the linens on the mom's bed.
Thank you! 🤗
Your trailer looks awesome If I could ask, what model subaru do you have. I have been looking for a small trailer to pull with our 2020 outback base model. How does yours feel like towing the trailer, does it strugle? Any info you can give me would be helpful. Thanks and happy camping!
We have a 2020 XT Outback, so the bigger engine model, with a higher tow capacity. There are people who tow these with the base model but you will be close to the tow limit and want to watch your weight. We’ve had no issues so far including a trip to Utah over some decent mountain passes. My aunt just bought the Happier camper HC1 studio and she is towing with a 2023 base model Outback. She has driven from the west coast to the Midwest so far and had no issues. The happier camper is basically the same weight as the Alto but it is several feet shorter. Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for the info That gives me the information I was looking for. thanks for the reply. Happy camping.
Thanks - great tour! Cute little camper - congrats Jane!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love seeing how people make their campers their own 💖
me too! Thanks for watching!
I’m not sure which year model this is but this is the one that I’d want. The new TAB 400 model has the new bunk bed feature so that completely changed my mind on the TAB 400. I don’t like the bunk beds at all! What year model is this?
It was a 2022 model. So right before they did the bunk. I’m kind of surprised that the bunk is a standard feature and not an option. But it will be a great addition for families. Hope you find just the right thing for you!!
For 2023, the Bunk is Standard, but now they have made it Optional in the 2024 model year!🎉 With the Bunk Option in '24 (and ALL '23s) the Tab will have the Lagune mounted dining Table and without the Bunks, it'll be a "fixed" table...
So what did Aunt Jane decide on? 😂
She just bought her camper a week ago!! I’m working on the video now :)
@@breem9982 Did I miss the video on Aunt Jane's decision? My criteria are similar, looking at REI basecamp airstream, alto safari 1723 & tab 320s. Would really love to hear what she decided and why!
Hi Evvelyn - I just posted the video! She bought the Happier Camper HC1 Studio. It's small, light, has an indoor kitchen and bathroom and she can have a table set up with the bed. One of the biggest selling points was how the back opens up completely.
How did you do the shower wall?
Michelle ended up screwing the shelves into the shower wall. She could not get any of the stick on methods to work. Obviously you would need to be careful about how you use the shower once you do this. You don’t want water in the walls!
Hi, I have a Fam as well, and I use bungee straps to keep the door from flying open while drive. I normally will hook mines to the window latch and pull it to the door knobs on the storage cabinets by the sink. Such a life saver! Hope that helps.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing!
What is the weight capacity for the bunk?
150 pounds. Thanks for watching!
Where did you get the under cabinet drawers Thanks
See where you got them
Thanks for watching! Yes you can provably see form another comment, they came from the container store.
Where is the Factory in the U S where you can buy these?
These are sold direct from the factory in Canada to the US, or depending on your location from a dealer in Canada (that is how we bought ours). They have a program to match you with an owner so you can see one in person or you can join the Altoistes Facebook group and find someone in or near your town who will give you a tour. You do have to pick them up in Canada.
@@outdoorsmadesimple IS THE TRAILER WORTH IT?
For us, yes. I have not seen anything else that has the combination of features that this has which are exactly what we wanted. Light weight, windows, bunk bed option that lets us keep the table up, etc. I think it comes down to what features you must have. You can defiantly get something less expensive in a similar weight class. But you make some trade offs.
Thanks for the info. They have over a 2 and a half year wait to get one.
Awsome you and your family are having a great time in your new freesolo. We have an 2020 outback as well and are looking for a light weight trailer we can pull. All the dealers we have been to said we would be pushing it with the outback. How has yours handled the freesolo? Carlos, in texas2
Thanks for watching! Michelle doesn't have an Outback, she has an Ascent. I personally would not use the Outback to tow the Freesolo. There are lots of differing opinions on towing so you definitely have to decide what makes sense for you. The Outdoors Made Simple family has a 2020 Outback XT which we use to pull our Alto F1743. For comparison, the Freesolo is 3320 lbs fully loaded and the Alto is 2700lbs. Our Outback can tow 3500lb. I like to keep it to <80% of the tow capacity so 2700lbs is about the max I feel comfortable with. While the Outback XT on paper can tow the Freesolo you might find it more comfortable to tow something lighter. Have you looked at the Rove Lite? It is very similar to the Freesolo but is 2500 max weight. You can also check out a blog post on our website outdoorsmadesimple.com that compares the 7 trailers we looked at.
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
I have this BH, and use it a subie Outback 3.6R. Great concept but a little blah on the interior fit and finish, however if you like to tinker it's quite easy to mod up to look quite nice and moving to LiFePO4 has helped as well. Have fun.
Thanks for sharing!
I have this same model as Michelle. Does the thermostat only control the furnace. Thank you for your videos.
They controls are separate between the furnace and AC. Thanks for watching!
What other lightweight campers have you come across that have the bunk option? The concept is here, but this does not look like it will hold up to camping where we live.
You can find some additional info on my website outdoorsmadesimple.com. I did a blog post on the 7 trailers we considered. I also have a searchable database you can filter by bunk beds if you want to look at all the trailers that I've found that are <5000 lbs and have bunk beds. Depending on what you are looking for, the fiberglass Scamp or Casita might be good fits for you, both have bunk options. Also, the Mantis is pretty heavy but very rugged. We have a safari condo Alto that we love with a kind of alternative bunk (they are not over one another but there are beds for 4). Is there something in particular you are looking for in terms of camping - cold weather, off road...?
@@outdoorsmadesimple thanks. Yes, something light and off-road. We live in N. Colorado and Wyoming, and disperse camping pulls apart pretty much all the off the shelf campers. The mantis is cool, but 18' long? thats silly. Still doesnt have a dedicated table?
Have you considered a pop-up camper? They make some that are meant for off road now and you get a lot of interior space with those once they are popped up. Before our Alto, we had a pop-up that was 20 years old and still going strong.
@@outdoorsmadesimple for sure. we currently have a flagstaff mac I flipped the axels on. The opus is great, but super heavy and really expensive. Not sure what else is out there in this category. The Opus just has too many unnecessary things that contribute to the weight. Also, the black series. Do you know of others?
@@markkuthielkozak8753 I think you have found the industry weak spot! I have not found anything light weight that is good for off road. It think the trade offs for weight make it hard to do both. I have seen people go some pretty impressive places with 16 ft airstreams and fiberglass trailers like Scamp. But it sounds like those would not meet your needs. Let me know if you find anything!
Things I like, things I dont. I have a 2019 Max. For us, it was almost perfect when we got it. Of course there is no such thing as perfect. We've made a bunch of modifications that suit us. If people want to see some of the "mods" that others have done, log onto Facebook and search for the Little Guy Mods page. Several things about the newer model I dont like. Those tail lights inset into the black bumper. Safety hazard. To small and to low. The LED strip version on the 2018-2019 models, much better plus the red reflectors in the area that is now the tail lights. Hate that they got rid of the front Television and left only the rear one. That makes zero sense. If you wanted to get rid of TV, get rid of the bedroom one!!! Things I love. For a small trailer, there is a ton of storage. Almost to much! After 3 years, we've learned to pare down. The wet bath is pretty good, however the lack of a sink is a problem. My wife doesnt like me shaving in the kitchen sink. We are in the process of modifying that!! I did add a second propane tank and changed the batteries to two 6 volt. Both fit under the bonnet up front. For the bed, we did get the Froli System for the mattress. Helped a bunch with air flow underneath. Also I did install extra insulation under the bed. No more drafts, no more cold spots. The under pass through storage is amazing. I can fit so much in there. Something I changed out real quick, the spare tire location. I'm not a youngster, so crawling underneath if I get a flat is a no-deal.!!!! I put a spare tire holder on the bumper hitch at the rear! Did not change the weight distribution at all.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! It’s so great to hear from owners!
I have the Braxton Creek BR15. It's almost identical. Thank you for sharing your setup!
Thanks for watching!
Do the cargo nets screw on or stick on?
Thanks for watching! Michelle has screwed the cargo nets on. She said she hasn't had a lot of luck with sticking things on the walls except for the hooks for hats she has around the door. Happy camping!
May I know how did the camper do in winter time. Did you make some trips during the snowy time. Because I love winter travelling. Love to know how it held it for the weather. Best
The Alto is not truly designed for very cold weather camping, though people do it. The bottom is not enclosed and the walls are very thin to keep the camper light weight. We have camped in late fall and early spring and been very comfortable. The coldest we have camped has been ~26 degrees F. In that case the camper did great. You need to keep a window cracked to keep the condensation down but we stay very warm at those temperatures. If you are winterized you can camp at colder temperatures but we have not camped in true winter. There is a video from another Alto owner who has done this, check it out here: th-cam.com/video/KrvNyQxZoJw/w-d-xo.html
Your video was great! We have just purchased one of these. I am wondering where you purchased the closet organizer (4-drawer set) where you store your clothes. It fits so well in the closet. Thanks!
Thanks! We got that from the Container Store. It is an Elfa freestanding cabinet. There are a bunch of ways to install those, check out the Facebook Altoistes group for more. I just used industrial strength Velcro along the back and that has held really well. Enjoy the planning during your wait! It will go faster than you think!
How did you install the switch for the radio? Thats pretty cool.
Thanks! Michelle’s boyfriend is an electrician so he did the switch for her. However, she got the idea from the BraxtonCreek owners Facebook group so you can check there for some tips on that modification.
Very cool y'all!
Thanks!
Out of all of the trailers that y’all viewed which one did your aunt pick?
Thanks for asking! She actually hasn’t picked one yet. She’s been trying to convince us to sell her ours (nope!) but is leaning toward one I haven’t posted a video on yet. There are still 2 more we looked at that I haven’t gotten posted so stay tuned!
Something tells me she really likes her camper.
I do 😂! You would think my enthusiasm would dim a bit over time but 6 months of use and I’m still as giddy as I was in this video when we get to use it.
@@outdoorsmadesimple😊
