First time ever using a sculling oar. The blade follows a "figure 8" path while sculling. The stroke would be more powerful with the entire blade immersed.
learning to use a sculling oar

First time using a sculling oar in an Ilur class sail and oar boat designed by Francois Vivier. Sculling isn't difficult, but will definitely require practice to master.

This just popped up on my youtube list. Excellent! Great music, too! Thanks, Gabby!

Nice style, looks like a fine boat but doesn't instruct anyone on how to scull with a single oar.

In all these past years I never came across this delightful video of Waxwing. For a minute there I thought it might be John himself playing until I saw the credits. Wonderful! Stay safe! I know that something new and exciting is taking shape in your garage.

Gabrielle, Love the view from the peak! great way to see your sail shape. If you can I would love to see the downhaul adjustments and the effect on the sail from the view of the Peak. While pointing, while reaching - hard set downhaul, soft set... the video will tell so much! Best wishes with Wax Wing and get in touch if you want to sell her! Rob

Brilliant! You've inspired me to try lashing my GoPro to the sprit on my Melonseed. Excellent music. If Roger Barnes ever saw this video, I think he'd ship avel dro over to your sailing ground for a new adventure.

John, great to see you looking at the ILUR. I've got to get me one of those! Thanks for your 2020 videos - also always great to watch!

@@robmarykunzig5533 Thanks ... I have a couple of autumn rowing and sailing videos in the pipeline. Also, I purchased Roger Barnes’ book The Dinghy Cruising Companion ... should make for an interesting read over the winter.

@@GrenvilleMelonseedSkiff496 His youtube channel is pretty great. I'd love to replicate his life there, over here. The Ilur gives me the chance to deal with 2, 3 and maybe 4' seas... making a long journey possible. Simple rig that can be comfortably reefed anywhere anytime. Stay Well John

OK. Nice white oar, now get you a marker and put a HAPPY FACE on one side in the middle of the oar, take a red marker and color one edge of the blade on the HAPPY FACE side, take a black marker and color the other edge of the blade on the HAPPY FACE side. Then KEEP THE HAPPY FACE UP looking at you. Dip the red edge down and pull to that side then dip the black edge down and pull back toward that side KEEPING the HAPPY FACE UP. This PUSHES WATER away from you. Then to PULL WATER you do the same but have the edge UP instead of down and do the same movements. Try it on a dock to start with and see how it pulls and pushes water. When you do it right the oar will pull away from you when you are pulling water, it will push against the dock when you are pushing water. It does the same with a canoe paddle. It will pull away from the boat when you pull water and push against the side when you push water. The above oar just moves water back and forth and doesn't help get you somewhere.

Nice thing about sculling is you can also go in reverse.
