This is funny! I worked at HMC as a security officer back in 1995-1996. In those days, I was given an old school mag light flashlight, handcuffs and was told to always protect the nurses, doctors and staff no matter what. I received ZERO training. Then again, our chief and the late great Lt. Conway always backed us up. The fights we got into were non-stop and often times violent. Staff loved us! We worked very hard and loved every minute of it. Our only ask was to have an off-duty SPD officer available to assist if we needed them in the ER from 1800 - 0600. Admin honored our request. Then came the unions and an incredibly incompetent new Chief of our department who decided to hire a bunch of his buddies and fired disgraced former police officers. It went downhill fast and I couldn't leave there fast enough. Still, it was a wonderful place to work at the time and I still recall with very fond memories of my time there.

For all you people out there that chime in about how easy hospital security is and they aren't cops bla bla bla. Please go volunteer at a busy hospital. There is a reason lots of hospitals have their own state certified police department. Name any other business that has to do that other than a University..... Cops not only have crazy backup, and protective gear but they also have authority that 99% of the time keeps people in line. These Hospital Officers deal with more shit because people do not respect them because they do not have arrest powers.

Interesting. I'm reading a book about the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case. On how the members of "Take Back the Night" turned into a virtual lynch mob on behalf of a lying prostitute. Really; I Just Got Through reading about them specifically a few minutes ago. One of the Lacrosse players participated in the walk one day. And they wanted to string him up the next! This is standard in our liberal universities of course. Until Proven Innocent: Political Correctness and the Shameful Injustices of the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case by Stuart Taylor Jr. and KC Johnson

this comment is for the farmers who have sit in organized state senate and lobby amongst themselves for future gain. It is all the same between big city folks to old country folks. It is a enterprise no one wants to sell there land/sit: to a certain price. Republic republic is what this State of Idaho sits on just as dirty and polluted as the snake river. Im not going to capitalize that.

Ok so what do you want? More apprentices per journeyman or less? You said more apprentices working. IBEW has a great apprenticeship program. I encourage all who want to be apprentices to do it. Then when you turn out run like hell. You do not want to be union. Prevailing wage does not establish our economy, your customers do. Forcing tax payers to pay you more does not help. All we do is borrow money. It is never paid back, just passed on to future generations. And why? So a small percentage of the people (Union) can make more at the expense of everybody else. You have the right to collective bargaining. As do the automakers. But you are not forced to drive union cars by government laws jacking up the prices and that is apparent to anyone who drives by your hall. You even have reserved non union car parking (unless you can afford a Chevy Volt). When you say you want local workers manning the jobs you are saying that if you move somewhere else your ok with them not hiring you because your are from Seattle. Good Old Boys (and Girls) Club. You must be a member to benefit. How about those electricians out in the suburbs? Do you think they like it when some national electrical firm manned by your electricians drives into town. They don't count because they are not in the club! I would like it if my town would hire local contractors too but its hard when Seattle contractors come in armed with Market Recovery Money and political favors. How about those poor people on the border in Idaho? Do you think they want your union contractors coming over there and taking local jobs? You people are living in a fantasy world and will probably end up going the way of the autoworkers. And you deserve it.

I worked security across the street from HMC, police showed up one night on a knock & talk, they had 4 suspects at their car, and one ran off, so the officers gave chase and told me to keep eye on the other 3. They were getting restless HMC security came and gave me a hand. SPD arrived with the one guy and more SPD was enroute. I got fast backup from HMC. Thanks to both HMC and SPD

@mybill2012 You are wrong about contract security. They will not be better. They may cost less but they will not do a better job. Plus I hate to tell you this but off duty police officers are not good for hospital security. I worked at one hospital that had in house security and right next to that hospital was a hospital of the same size that used off duty police officers. The in house security officer did a much better job. The other hospital with police had no security. Just a fact.

  • @Marty32

@chrisharper1225 Agreed. One thing I've learned (I work security) is that we are just that--security. People (and guards) tend to forget what security is all about. We prevent things from getting worse. We make sure everything is okay--and when shit hits the fan, then yes the police is called (since they are reactive, and we are proactive).

Security officers are not police. As a veteran of both I can tell you without a doubt that these SO don't understand that fact. 95% of your job as an SO in a healthcare facility is customer service. SO are there to assist visitors and patients, enforce hospital policy in a cooperative manner, and protect people from injury, not play cop. And what tools do you need.. your not SWAT.. that isn't your role. SO have to be hands on to be effective and you should have the trainining to be hands on

The University of Washington has a very great reputation in healthcare, science and law enforcement. At the time I worked there, UW had three job classifications in public safety. UW Police (A fully state accredited law enforcement agency), UW Security Officers (Who had the legal authority to go hands on and detain/handcuff) and Security Guards (Who monitored alarms, cameras and had no detainment authority). The pay difference between each job classification was significant.

This is very tough job, have to deal with fucking drunks and drug addicts ,dumb homeless people the list goes on and on ,you usually make good money in hospital security compared to just a regular guard but it isnt easy you risk your life. Have you ever see a guy with his brains blown out and dropped off in front of ER you will if you do hospital security. You also have to take dead bodies to the morgue all by yourself .
