ford truck lug nuts modification.
the lug nuts on my truck have sheet metal caps on them, they always distort in the air ratchet and get stuck in the socket. this fixed the problem. the only thing is the nuts are now 20mm instead of 22mm. a new lug wrench needs to be acquired to keep in the truck. the factory one no longer fits.

cutting gear teeth on the shaper machine.
มุมมอง 8K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I crashed my lathe and broke some gear teeth, I filled the gaps with my torch and some brazing filler. then cut ney teeth with the shaper machine. be sure to look at the pictures at the end.

New jaws for an old vise
มุมมอง 372 ปีที่แล้ว
I made a new set of jaws for my 6 inch wilton vise. sorry for the picture formatting, still learning how to do this. I'll use a different format in future videos.

17/64= .2656, 9/16= .5625. 😢
My vintage disk cutter works on a worm gear, begining of the disk doesnt cut right, i'll try cleaning and refining like you did here..
If drilling right through why not just use bolt and nut instead of tapping?
Hey. Thanks for the video, I’m trying put 4 new holes with threads on to my cast iron fire door here in the UK and can’t work out what size bit I need to use and what tab size for a 5mm screw? I’m sure this is laughable to you but any help would be hugely appreciated
Nice work. I sure miss my old shaper. Thanks for sharing.
Looks alot more like cast steel than cast iron. From the flakey drill chips to the edges of the table being rounded instead of brittle fractured
Don't we need to pre heat cast iron before drilling??
Why you turn off your comments on the FORD LUG NUT video? I did like the demeanor !! HAHA ! Ya gotta get mad sometimes that's true.. Dave
I've never tried to drill cast iron but am thinking of making a side-rail attachment for my 1950s table saw. How to keep the bit for the pilot hole from wandering? Can a standard punch put a tiny divot into the cast iron?
Should be able to just center punch it. The nice thing about cast iron is there's lots of graphite in it, and it's easy to drill.
The dynamic jaw on the vise has no shelf have you had problems with it I'm restoring a vise with no shelves dynamic or static .
How much would it cost to have a small hole tapped into cast iron? I have a screw hole thats stripped on my pellet stove so i cant snug up the glass to make it air tight. Also, where would i go or who would i call for such a repair? Ty
@PiesWife You need the services of a Machine Shop. Whether or not there's one in your local area, is anoher story.
That table is a BEAST. did you want the deep tapped threads through it for grip, or desired a flush tabletop bottom? i.e., versus just using longer bolts and washer/nut on the underside?
Those are not an inch deep... I think. The edges look closer to 1 inch, but I dont think the threaded holes look more than 3/4 inch maybe? maybe its the perspective. But the drill bit doesn't seem to move downward near an inch. I am compelled to comment, I dunno why lol.
@Alex Holton the iron is 1 inch thick. The sides are 2 inches.
What material was your tap made of? I read online that a tungsten steel tap is best for cast iron, am I correct?
Yep did that as part of my trade as a fitter machinist.
Awesome hobby. Way to detail the calculations
Man that thing looks absolutely thrashed! 😮 Thom.. YOU ARE A GEAR GUY.. ! Ok.. I kind of understand.. How did you learn all this stuff? Very good video.. I do like the camera work you did. Man I still wish I lived in the area. I'd come over and help out 'or learn this stuff'.. Seriously Thom.. Just keep posting stuff like this.. It will catch on.. And your doing good for Humanity. ** HAD TO EDIT MY COMMENT ** so It would be a fantastic idea if you EXPLAINED how you became interested in this stuff in a bit more detail.. And how someone like me can 'get the tools' and all that. 💪 Thanks for posting my friend! Your the BEST!
Thanks D Max! I wish you were closer too. I'm thinking about a shop tour and a how to become a beginner machinist. Probably will be separate videos. I have some gear cutting coming too.
@@thomsworkshop946 Oh man.. that would be pretty good Thom.. Think about it.. GOOD Title too!!
@@thomsworkshop946 Check out the machines in this Holman moody shop.. You will probably want all of them.. I do.. th-cam.com/video/5mxeG7IMhAA/w-d-xo.html
Nice.. But I did not know what the heck you were doing until I 'read your description.. which most people dont'. Also.. Is that a 'stunt' actor.. - Don't recognize the white beard Thom.. We're you that guy on the street corner today holding up the sign "Will WERK for OLD MACHINES - any help " .. Yeah that WAS YOU.. Wasn't it.. 💪 THom.. You might consider doing a video on "WHERE TO GET TOOLS LIKE THIS".. I would be interested in learning how to find stuff like this and how to 'negociate' a good price maybe... Just saying.. cause I'm not living in Florida anymore where these things are everywhere.. DMAX
Is that table top full thickness? CRAZY!! Always used to crack me up about those 'horizontal drilling' signs we'd see on those boring rigs.. Them guys were so proud.. There's way too many potential jokes to make when machining stuff.. haahah Nice job on the video.. except.. turn the phone sideways so I think I am watching on my Computer or big screen 😀💪 Dave
1 full inch thick cast iron and another inch of diagonal webbing and the edge is 2 inches thick all the way around. Extremely heavy. The phone was sideways, I just need to figure out what format I need to use.
@@thomsworkshop946 Cool video.. Pretty soon I'm going to get some more equipment.. Someone has to be able to make stuff for these "NEW" people ie. Millennials.. Maybe it's the old guys like you and me? IDK (I dont know for sure).. Dave
I guess I gotta start lookin for used stuff like You.. I can fix stuff, weld it whatever.. Thanks for posting .. Keep posting stuff from your workshop.. Very cool Thom.. Also, Try adding some keywords to your 'tag' section on the video.. Yeah it's a hassle.. but more folks searching for info about this vice or the tooling machines you use they can find it.. Good job my friend! I'd like to know how you find all these cool tools! Do you go to auctions? I dont see them on the 'side of the road'.. how do you find them.. I see you have a pretty full shop now... Nice explanation of the PPE etc.. BTW I have only caught myself on fire 4 times last year.. No joke.. No burns due to PPE but yeah.. I get it.. Love when the PLASTIC on the Oil bin starts to 'melt'.. hahah My wife just stays away from me when "I have PPE "on. Dave
Thanks for the comments and suggestions Dave. Yeah, I usually surf Facebook marketplace, just surf around and search for whatever comes to mind and the algorithm will try to figure out what you're into. It will eventually start bringing listing to you that it thinks you might want.
Also I need to work on the formatting of the picture, didn't realize I used that tall skinny picture, it did that even with the phone turned sideways.
@@thomsworkshop946 Yeah buddy I appreciate you talking during your video. Explanation really brings it home.. Always shoot 'sideways' I do the same thing.. Shoot in 1080 30fps.. no need for more at this time. Your doing good. I want to see a 'this is my shop' video.. And put the equipment you have in the 'tag' part so people searching for the "JAWESOME 2000" or whatever can find out.. Also what "OIL" you use.. just cause you use linseed oil once.. say it every video cause people may be tuning in for the first time and may never have a chance to watch your 'old' videos.. hahaah "OLD" like you and Me.. Dave
@@thomsworkshop946 Cool my friend.. I've not tried that YET.. but thanks.. Put that "TIP" on your next video.. I have not been looking a FB much this last month myself.. been busy but I did not know you could find stuff there.. I'm not the only one.. Trust me.. Dave
@@thomsworkshop946 Yeah.. Just turn the phone sideways.. put it on the tripod.. Your doing great buddy! Dave
Hey Thom, for some reason I did not have the 'bell' thing on.. Really great to hear your explanation my friend! do you have to move the metal by hand or does it automatically feed into the blade? Dave
Oh man.. What a machine! You too lucky my friend! The 'hypnosis' is a benefit I would think.. Man! What a shop you got going on! I just picked up a whole bunch of commercial grade woodworking tools from my Dad.. So I got that stuff covered.. Now I need some metalworking equipment! Keep posting Thom! Dave
D Max, You would benefit greatly if you got a milling machine and a lathe. Not to mention with your robotics skills, no doubt CNC is in your future.
@@thomsworkshop946 Yeah.. I love seeing that stuff in action.. NICE COMMENTARY too Thom!
Lucky guy! I need one of these.. + another of me to make stuff ! HAHA DMAX
They're all over the place, you can pick them up pretty cheap.
What machine are you using Thom? That thing looks powerful! DMAX
That's a van norman vertical mill. It's a beast.
@@thomsworkshop946 So it's 220 VAC right?
@@DMAX_DIY this one is 3 phase, I have a converter for it but yeah it's 220v. The little blue one in the other video is 110v.
😀@@thomsworkshop946 Thom.. interesting equipment - consider doing some pre-action explanation.. What your doing and why your doing it.. You got some dang cool stuff my friend! But people like me are interested in what your are building.. or modifying.. Dave
Yeah, I'm going to do more in depth videos. I'll do a shop tour and some project videos too. I think I'll also continue with the shorts, I'm seeing lots of those and they seem popular, since I don't have double Ds, at least I have cool tools to drive some traffic. LOL
