Don't you get distortion by using the continental stitch on a solid area like the blue section? I always use basketweave stitch in order to prevent distortion.
Great question! You're absolutely right-basketweave is ideal for reducing distortion, especially over larger solid areas. That said, I've found that with careful tension, continental stitch can work well on smaller solid sections without noticeable distortion. For larger areas though, I'd definitely recommend basketweave to keep everything smooth and even. It's worth the extra time for that clean, polished look!
Very helpful. Great ideas! Thanks.
Great video, but the affected voice fry is excruciatingly annoying.
Can you show me how to work with this kind of pattern please :<:<:<:<: thanks
omg this is the first vid i've watched that helps me as a true beginner! thank you
Can u do a video on how to calculate the amount of yarn you need to buy make a kit for someone? I wouldn’t have to send a whole skein would I?
Hi, I am a beginner, so you always double you thread? Thank you, Angela
If you're using crewel-weight wool on 13-count canvas (like in our kits), then yes!
Thank you for getting back to me! Angela
Lovely instruction. Beautiful hands, lovely voice, New York to Texas New York to Texas or Texas to New York. I should say that’s very helpful.
Fabulous instruction thank you!
Glad you found them helpful!
Glad to uave found your channel. I've been doing have embroidery for 3 years and I'm just picking up needlepoint. I've read through several vintage needlepoint books and rising the canvas is exactly what they say to do to switch rows of continental😊. I'm glad to see it demonstrated.
Thank you so much for your comment and for discovering my channel! I'm so pleased to hear you are now exploring the world of needlepoint too. Vintage needlepoint guides are such a treasure trove of wisdom. Welcome to the community and feel free to share any tips or questions!
Yes!!!! That is exactly how i stitched in my younger days. You call it weaving. Seems like so many things are different in needlepoint today than when i used to do it 40 years ago. Its a beautiful design with lovely stitches
Glad to hear from someone with years of experience! Interesting point about how techniques have evolved over time. It's so valuable for stitchers today to learn from those familiar with how it was done previously. Thank you for the thoughtful feedback!
It's same as half cross stitch..
Thank you for your comment! While continental and half cross stitches may look similar, they differ in technique and results. Continental provides higher coverage and a different appearance on the back, making it a strong choice for solid areas. Half cross stitch is generally lighter and less robust. If you have more questions, feel free to ask. Happy stitching!
What stitch are you using on this one?
It's a continental stitch! You can find more information about it at: spider-spun.com/blogs/back-of-work/tent-stitches
4:08 If you care share, where did you get the letter chart that helped you know how to form your letters properly?
You may purchase the charts by following this link: spider-spun.com/collections/stripes
I like how you used the Clip as a wrap around.
I'm glad you noticed! Sometimes you just have to get a little creative with what you have on hand.
I just came across your work a week or so ago and have been wondering where this art has been all my life... I am a hand-embroiderer (both free-hand and cross stitch), I've done a lot of hand-stitched felt applique, but I've never done this sort of stitching. How doable would this be for someone like me?
Some projects are better than others for beginners - the zodiac canvases would be perfect for you! I have plenty of customers who have never held a needle in their lives and whip through multiple stockings. It sounds like you have some experience, so you should be just fine :)
You do whatever works for you. I can't stand rigidity and strict adherence to rules when doing something for fun, particularly when you've found a way that works well for you. I'd far rather do something I enjoy, even if people say the process isn't correct.
Definitely! The most important thing is that you have fun and find satisfaction in the process.
How doable would something like this be for a total beginner? Someone who's never done this sort of stitching before? I've done hand embroidery and cross stitch for years (along with quilting and hand applique) but have never touched this sort of sewing. I'd love to try it, but I don't know if my previous experience will translate if that makes sense.
Thank you for this video. I still have a question about something I’m confused about relating to how to convert the filled-in squares on a cross stitch alphabet pattern to a needlepoint canvas made up of intersecting threads. They’re not the same, so for example your “N” is wider on the left side of the vertical center line of your canvas than the right side (i.e., the N is not perfectly symmetrical width-wise as it relates to the center verticle line). Is there anyway around this?
This is really helpful but can you make like a shorter one
Harika teşekkürler
Very helpful! Huge thanks
You’re welcome! Happy I could help!
It’s gorgeous and I love you are not using stretcher bars so annoying. I like the weaving
Thank you!! I travel a lot so using stretcher bars on a 13x19" canvas is not really possible :) And yes, I am using continental in this video.
Are you doing continental stitch?
If you want a good lift on your stitch and tension on your work use the hoops.
Totally agree. I always use a frame…ei: I tack my fabric to a wooden frame. I’ve also learned that the finished product rarely distorts when you stitch rather than “scoop” your stitches
Wooow que bonito. Y donde lo puedo comprar?
Thank you :) You can purchase this kit at www.spider-spun.com/shop/p/tree-lot-needlepoint-christmas-stocking. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Hi Nicole - You ordered a canvas from me? I don't see the order in my system, so I hope it didn't get lost. Please email me at info@spider-spun.com to see what we can do. Thanks!
So Glad I found you. I wanted to needlepoint for years. Thank you for this.
Thank you :) Let me know if you have any other questions.
When would you use a bsketweave stitch? What is the advantage of doing a basketweave? Thank
Hi Donna - I would use basketweave when I'm doing a background. The advantage is that it's a full-coverage stitch and very stable. The disadvantages are that it's hard to pick out if you decide to change a stitch. It's best for larger areas that you don't question what the colors need to be. I'm releasing a basketweave tutorial with all of this and more in a few weeks.
How do you keep your yarns organized while doing a project, just need some pointers!!
Hopefully this post helps you out - it's all about how I use project bags and organize my yarn by winding it into skeins: www.spider-spun.com/blog/how-to-organize-thread
How do you keep your yarns organized when working on a project?
Hi there! I wrote a quick blog post describing all the ways I keep yarn and tools organized here: www.spider-spun.com/blog/how-to-organize-thread
this video is great!!
Thank you :)
Can you remove one strand after you twist it?
You technically can...and I certainly have yanked one strand out when in an impatient mood - but I wouldn't advise it. It's pretty quick to wind and unwind little hanks (like 30 seconds), and doing this will avoid snarling all your other strands or causing the one you want to use to get stripped or damaged.
@@spider_spun Thanks!
Thank you so much for your advice, your voice is so calming, like to listen and watch you work!!
Thank you!! That's so nice to hear :)
Love this and so neat!
Are you working with 1 tiny strand of the Persian Wool Yarn?
I am using two strands of Appletons 2-ply crewel weight yarn. Unfortunately, I don't know much about Persian wool yarn and don't think I can advise on how much to use to get the same thread look as I have here.
Hi! Glad I found you! I have a very difficult needlepoint, (BEARDED IRISES of many colors) And I'm not a total beginner; however, I noticed some of the squares are colored almost half one color and part of the square could be a different color, HELP! It has Persian tapestry wool in the kit and I don't know if I should use the whole yarn plys or not. Thank you!
Hi Vicki - It's hard to know exactly how to help without a picture or look at the instructions. Assuming that it's a canvas where you're just supposed to do a tent stitch (the classic stitch that goes diagonally from left to right like this ////), I think you should just pick a color - whatever looks best to you. I suppose you could split the strands, but that would be challenging, especially if a lot of the colors are split. If I'm ever unsure about which color a square is, I skip it and wait to stitch it until the end when I can better see which color will look best in that spot. At the end of the day, it's just needlepoint and no one will notice if you used the "wrong" color in one spot :) Good luck!
Just getting back into needlepoint. One recommendation for your videos; use a contrasting background to the color of your thread. I think it will be easier to see what you’re doing.
Thanks for the tip! I'll try that next time :)
Super cool trick 😉 thanks
Glad you liked it!
I am interested in this handwork, thanks for the demo 🙋♀️
Another option for yarn is a sport-weight wool yarn--it's still 4-ply but not as thick as worsted weight/tapestry
My first time too see your video. You gave some good points. I loved your video. What kind of thread are you using? The needle points I have done came in a kit with a yarn. I have not bought one in a few years though. I would like to do another one soon. My husband died in June, 2021,. Before that my dad died. It has been rough here. Have not had much cash to do anything. Someday maybe, I can get one. You do beautiful work. Have a terrific week.
Thank you so much for taking time to let me know places I can look for affordable needlepoint. Have a terrific week.
*Reposting my original comment in case it helps anyone else. After switching to a business account, my replies to comments got deleted.* I'm so sorry to hear about your losses. In this video, I'm using Appletons 2-ply crewel weight yarn. It's such a beautiful product. There are a lot of great vintage needlepoint kits (with the yarn) that sell for really great prices on sites like eBay, Etsy, and Needlepoint Destashing. I have been able to pick up a few things over the years for about $25-30 each. You just have to keep hunting :)
Thank you and I hope you do more needlepoint videos!!!!! They are really needed.
wow this looks so beautiful great work!! if I may ask you something, so i do cross stitch usually but I just bought my first needlepoint project from orchidea collection with dmc floss but i'm not sure how many threads i should i use...i couldn't find any info on it exact it 10CT canvas! :(
*Reposting my original comment in case it helps anyone else. After switching to a business account, my replies to comments got deleted.* Thanks! I would start out by doubling up 6-strand embroidery floss. I typically use this much thread for 13-count (mostly because I'm lazy and don't want to split AND like thicker coverage), but I think 12-strands (6-strand + 6-strand) will work for a 10-count canvas. You could also experiment with a smaller section of color first and change up the coverage when you move to the next color. It will be less noticeable than if you switch on a monochrome background section. For more information on how much thread to use, you can check out a blog post I did on different types of threads here: www.spider-spun.com/blog/thread-for-needlepoint
Wonderful! TH-cam needs more needlepoint. Hope to see more from you're channel.
