Sydney to Albury by Road
The road from Sydney to Albury has evolved from a track along which travellers had to negotiate major river crossings, dense forests, deep ravines, mud holes and the threat of attack from bushrangers. When Holbrook was by-passed in 2013, the Hume Highway had completed its transformation into the modern high-standard road that we see today, a major freight route and a critical part of our nation’s transportation infrastructure.

Indian Cremations in Jelbart Park Albury
It’s a wonder that the states or colonies didn’t have left and right hand drive vehicles to match their different gauge railways I never really understood why it took so long to get out of the Sydney area until they built the freeway to Goulburn when you look at the height of bridges imagine what it would have been like with horses and other animals whoops better look around for another route
Interesting information thank you
I lived in Albury in the early 1970's and my father opened the Albury Travelodge, now I believe its the Atura. We still call in regularly, and have stayed more than a few times on the way south (or returning north). Thanks for a reminder of what the roads were like in the past
Thanks for that, very interesting. Being from Yass, I can tell you that the road in the left photo at 30:00 still follows that path with the bend, creek crossing and hill climb. A lot more houses in the view these days though...
Thanks for the comment Neil and your observation and comparison with 2024. Greg
Used to love the drive from Wollongong to Canberra when I was a kid in the 70's. Up Macquarie Pass (that scared the crap out of me back then) thought Robertson and Moss Vale then onto the winding Hume and stop off at the cafe across from the park in Goulburn. Loved going through all the tiny old towns and looking out for roos that were common, was bush straight to the side of the road on the old Hume. I got to drive it a few times going to and From Adelaide before the Goulburn and other bypasses in the late 80's early 90's when it mainly single lane. Wasn't too bad if you weren't a fool. Boring now.
Thanks for your comment. You might be interested in this publication www.transport.nsw.gov.au/system/files/media/documents/2023/history-begins-with-a-road.pdf - it got me started. Greg
Really enjoyed this production. Very enlightening.
Thanks Graham, glad that you liked it. Greg

Happened ro be a thick fog on day of inspection
What a fascinating piece of history to be shared! Thank you :-)
Well done Greg! I have found all the info on the Albury & District Historical Society truly enjoyable. I have moved back up North again now, but I check the site out occasionally and learn something new and interesting each time. Cheers!
Thanks Chris, good to hear from you. Have spent most of the last 5 months in Sydney helping our daughter and her two boys (5 and 7) as she battles a nasty lymphoma. Cheers, Greg
Fascinating. My grandparents had a farm very close to the junction of the 2 rivers ,My uncle knew where it was . I would be interested in seeing where his property was . He was a soldier settler I believe . He came from Wodonga.
My grandfather had a farm just down from the current road that goes up to Bethanga. I have been looking for something like this for ages. Thank you vey much I skipped over bits but will watch it all when I get a chance.
Great video, thank you very much. My 4x great-grandfather, Luke Everitt, was Albury's first builder, commencing business in 1845. The family owned land on Dean & Guinea streets, and later several of his children became proprietors of some of Albury's early hotels. I learned a lot from this video.
Glad you enjoyed it Samuel, especially given your links to important Albury pioneers. Greg Ryan
Oh please correct that record we all live and die very sacred place , much appreciate you witnessing and speaking for those who can't 🙏
Can you advise if anyone has authored and published a book, detailing the construction of Hume Dam?
Have you looked at the videos on this TH-cam channel describing the Hume Dam's construction? I don't know of a book having been published. Greg
@@Albury.History: Thanks, Greg. Yes, I have watched all of your videos on this channel. I have often wondered if a book was ever published? It would be amazing to see many of the archived engineering drawings and other photographs relating to the construction of the dam wall (in particular).
Does have a plaque now, and is limited 20 tonnes now. Still a great video on how it was built, thanks.
Many migrants recall the challenging and hard times at the camp.. some ran away , some were lucky the stayed only a few weeks there. Sone refuse to speak about their time there to this day.
No mention when gates were added to increase capacity the township of Tallangatta (old) was flooded Tallangatta was moved to Bolga where the name was changed to Tallangatta
I have read elsewhere that it was always the intention to build gates in the original wall.
Very interesting
Great video.
Thanks Bruce and A&DHS, what a great series. So great to be yanked by the collar and see where we live through a different lens, to a have light shone on how things evolve. What a wonderful resource.
Thank you for the very informative tour and information. Hope there will be more to come in the future. James Fallon was my Great Great Uncle and the brother of Edwin (my GG Grandfather) and Patrick all of who were also pioneers of the district and buried in the Albury Pioneer Cemetery.
Glad you enjoyed it Leonard, especially as you have such amazing family links to the Fallon family. Greg Ryan
Thanks. Nearly died of excitement.
As much I'm proud of the challenges that were faced and met.... I want to see the river run free...
Very informative, the more we learn about the history of early settlement by the white fella the more we realize how much the first nation people suffered from our merciless invasion.
Neighbourhoods with their own needs and character. Would be interesting for Council to revisit this and take into account when approving developments.
Excellent thanks!
Very interesting, thanks
Nice. Christopher Columbus has alot to answer for. Lol
Brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed it
I'm glad that you enjoyed it and pleased that we have been able to preserve Gerry's work from 2001. There is more on Hume Dam construction at our website: alburyhistory.org.au/hume-dam/ Greg Ryan, President A&DHS
