Kia ora. My name is Erin J. Doyle and I am a poet, biologist, and sometimes adventurer, currently working on my debut novel. I started this channel to connect with writer people and to share my journey.
Sorting through my notebooks
I need to sort through my notebooks and figure out which ones are worth keeping before I move to the UK next month. I keep putting this job off so, to force myself to sit down and do it, here we are.

Choosing my next writing project
มุมมอง 202 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Camino story I have been working on for the past few years is now done, so it's time to start a new WIP. Most of the work I have done on the Camino story over the past two years has been editing, line editing, and more editing, so I would like something that is a change of pace. And, with the start date for my PhD only weeks away, a light-hearted project that doesn't need a lot of research ...

Writing From Real Life Part 2: People might hate you
มุมมอง 253 หลายเดือนก่อน
I’ve talked about writing from real life once before, but I thought of a little more I should have included: if you base a character on yourself, you have to be ready for people not to like that character, and maybe love the character that hurts them. I am kind of nervous about sharing the example I used in this video. To connect with me elsewhere online: Instagram authorerinjdoyl...

I got one of those ‘is this a personalized rejection or just a really nice form rejection’ emails, too. She included links for where to search for other agents and publishers, but they were fairly generic (Publishers Marketplace, MSWL, etc.).
"He's a nice guy...and I hate him !" 👹 "She goes home to the town she grew up in...and meets a guy who hasn't shaved." LOL I loved listening to your story ideas! You have plenty to choose from, but I like that you ended up talking yourself into combining two ideas. Hope all the packing is going well!
Thanks 😊 I think I am on track with packing. The biggest part of the job (getting my books into storage) is done, all that's really left is selling off my bookcases.
Loving the Edgar Allen Poe in the background Erin!
Not sure if u know sharni is having a book launch this weekend!

@@shaniyer5380 I heard! I hope it went well?
@@erinjdoyle was great! Me elina elly Jill rean were all there.
Insightful.
You are so gorgeous so pretty
“Write a book,” they said. “It’ll be fun!” they said. 😑 At least you’ve got some options! I like the strategy of sending it out to NZ publishers and if none of them pick it up, then that means it wasn’t the path for this project. Whatever happens, I hope it gets published eventually because I’d LOVE to read it!!
Lovely to discover your channel. Welcome back! I write romance and have been on authortube for a couple of years now.
Hope you stay well, creative & productive now.
Thank you.
Ah, another poet who does BookTube - love it. I have really enjoyed discovering your channel. I love stories about walking, the rambling simplicity & space for digression, very enjoyable. I also adore poetry (especially contemporary/confessional) & literary fiction. I am new to BookTube as a creator, but enjoying it. It is a great lark, isn't it?
Welcome Erin- describing the pitch of your book is not the easiest.I subbed,I'm new to author tube too and need to do these tags.
Glad to see you're Back Erin! missed you! - Shan
Ahhhh I was so excited to see your face in my subscription feed!! I've been wondering what you've been up to in recent months. Sorry to hear the health issues were so bad, but yay for finally getting things taken care of. You have so much to look forward to! Congrats on the PhD position AND finishing the Camino story🥳 When you say you submitted the book, do you mean you're querying or was it submitted somewhere that will publish it? I am eager to purchase, haha! Good luck with the big move and getting all the arrangements in place to live and work in the UK for the next couple years. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all goes for you.
Aww thank you 🥰 NZ publishing houses don’t require you to have an agent, and NZ literary agencies are very few and far between. So, I decided to submit directly to a publisher that has published a decent proportion of our award-winning authors. If they aren’t interested, I will query agents in the UK once I get there (which is such a weird thing to say, I still don’t really believe I’m going).
Merry Christmas, Erin! Hope you’re well 🥰🎄
🎄🎄Merry Christmas, Meredith & co! I hope you’re getting a nice break 🎄🎄 I’m doing good. It was a bit touch and go for a moment there- I had a sudden stay in the hospital right before my flight to Korea and nearly had to cancel the trip, but here I am having my first ever white Christmas ❄️🥰
Thank you for such a lovely and fulsome vlog!
Loved this! Both funny and poignant. Hope you're well!
It’s so neat! Well done! You appear not to have cut yourself during the process. Good job
I was being VERY careful 😅
Love your videos Erin!
Please be a pet, and get well. Fast. 🙁
Will do, Mum.
Nothing like a cup of Milo! (I used to have mine with condensed milk!) Glad that you're on the mend. Sending good thoughts for continued improvement to your health.
Condensed milk! I can see that making it delicious. Thank you 😊
How frustrating they didn't test for basic vitamin and mineral levels years ago!! That seems so odd, especially when a patient's symptoms don't immediately point to a particular diagnosis. Loved your doctor's suggestion to just quit your job. Can you imagine? 😂 Your Milo sounds sort of like our Ovaltine. I remember drinking it as a kid and enjoying it, but who knows what it'd taste like to me now. Glad you're starting to feel better, though, and I hope you can tackle The Corner sooner rather than later!
Right?! Who would continue to push through if they could just quit? Milo is like Ovaltine but without the whey.... I think that's the difference. I do actually do like it when made up with sugar, but I don't have any in the house and I'm not going to by a big bag of sugar just for the occasionally hot drink, so I'm having it without and acting like it's a drama that's out of my control 😅😅
Ah, there's that Erin snark I've been missing!
It’s a drama
😲
Erin's promise: I'll show outside footage! Then: man bathing at library. Then: poor shots on bus. Then: loud escalators. Total outdoor shots: ZERO! 🤣🤣🤣 (Hope you've recovered)!
😂 This is why I never make promises. I'm improving...(the sting/bite is improving, not the diversity of filming locations).
Oh man, so happy to see a new! Totally missed your low-key sarcasm and self-effecement. 😅 Sending good thoughts for your full recovery!
Thank you 😅
What is this disease!
Tis but a cold, all be it one featuring a lingering cough. Multiple negative RATs.
If the word you're thinking of starts with "d" and ends with "e" it's a truly great word.
It does start with D and end in e 😊 I'm glad someone was able to identifiy it from my description. It's a bit scary using a word from a language I am not fluent in- what if I was wrong about it's meaning?!
@@erinjdoyle You're spot-on with the meaning. No worries there. And I think a title energises a project. Run with it! And stay dry!
@@squizzums Yay! Thanks for the reassurance.
Glad to hear that you and your home are safe.x
Thanks. The island is now bracing for a coming cyclone, so fingers crossed I come out of this dry too.
Woah
Indeed. Much more water and we would have lost the bridge.
That dang TH-cam algorithm making content creation such a dilemma 😤 I wish we didn’t have to put so much thought into it, haha! I say do what will be best for your stress levels, mental health, and overall physical health. Two channels means pressure to post different videos to two different places and might make you feel like you’re neglecting one or other other. But if you do decide to split things, I’ll happily subscribe to a new channel!
Yeah, just posting whatever whenever and having people love it would be nice 😅 I’m not likely to make a second channel anytime soon, but it’s good to know I have one subscriber in the bag 😁
There used to be a large gum tree in Maroochydore where I lived, the tree was that full of lorikeets if a loud noise startled them in the quiet of the night, the rumble of their wings as they all took off was incredible. I’m in Melbourne now, brings back memories.
That sounds amazing!
That’s reality…. Right there😂
So many congratulations on winning, but I’m sorry you had a rough time.x
Thank you. It certainly was a bumpier finish than I had expected, but I'm ok now
I would 100% change my schedule to avoid Annoying Laundry Lady. I hope the machines are available next Saturday lol Peanut butter M&Ms are the BEST! Can confirm, a chocolate covered American-style biscuit would be…a choice. Ew. Aww, I wanted to give you a hug when you had to pause. Glad you were doing better by the next day. And finally: CONGRATS ON WINNING!! Enjoy basking in the glow of victory and (hopefully) a bit of a writing break 😅
He asked what I do, and when I said that I am a geneticist (easier than explaining what a molecular ecologist is), he freaked out and ran out of the room, before coming back and asking if I could turn him into a frog 😲 Thank you. A hug would have been nice
Thanks for your video. It's clear that you were having a difficult time. Sending good thoughts that you are in a much better mental space.
Thank you
I love your clacky keyboard! Well done.x
I got it for the aesthetic, I keep it for the clicky clacks 😊
Hahahaha yesss go Erin, go!!
Hi Erin!
I’m tired just thinking about a 9 or 10K day. You did awesome! Oh, and candy can definitely be dessert. Especially if it’s chocolate. Think of the dairy!
Awesome!
Well done! 9k is amazing!
Great book title!
Thank you 😊
I am fairly new to NaNoWriMo and didn’t realize people did videos for this. I’ll do that When I get my voice back, I have strep throat I’m healing from but it doesn’t keep me from writing. My book as of seven storms uprooting humanity, from out of the darkness comes the wisdom of the light. It is a mystical memoir. I look forward to learning more about yours.
Some people make videos, but many of them keep it to just one at the end of the month to keep the workload down. I tried daily vlogs once but gave up after a week 😅 Take good care of your throat.
Simply refer to it as the working title. That’s what I do and then you can change it if it doesn’t feel right later. ❤
Ahhh very cool project idea! Handy that you already have the outline finished, haha! Good luck getting started tomorrow/today (since time zones and whatnot). It’ll be a great month 🥰
Using the video feels a bit like cheating 😂 Good luck to you too (not that you need it, you always crush that word count)
You’ll be fine! The muse will step in and take over any minute now…
Here's hoping 😅
Nothing like heading into NaNoWriMo with less than 2 weeks of prep time 🤣 Excited to see what you choose and how the writing madness goes for you!
Madness guaranteed
How did I not know Fight Club was a book?!
I only found out when it was assigned to us
@@erinjdoyle that's made me feel a bit better!
Hi! Your video was in my home feed (maybe bc I love Banned Books Week) and I wanted to say that The Hate U Give is an exceptional book. As an American, I feel like I can say it’s overwhelmingly real. And I think the cover choice will make more sense once you read it. Subscribing find out what you think of it!
Welcome! I love Banned Book Week too. I do have high expectations for The Hate U Give. I imagine it’ll hit different for a non-American, but I’m still preparing for it to be intense.
Blurbs are so tricky!
