The UK could design and build proper stuff back in the day. We could build an immense fleet of coal-fired and nuclear behemoths. Cathedrals of electricity production. Not anymore. We don't have the skills and capabilities to create equipment like Ferrybridge C today. The video, showing the demise of this great "servant of the nation", is a metaphor for the decline of British manufacturing.

This is a horrendous waste of a perfect part of our power grid and national energy security. This process of decarbonisation of the power industry will be regretted n the years to come !

And now we are living through a government induced energy crisis. Thankfully government has the solution too (sarcasm intended).

So sad. We'll come to regret the destruction of Ferrybridge C in our current electricity supply crisis. When wind speeds drop National Grid cannot rely upon wind farms. Hence the remaining coal-fired power stations in the UK are on standby at present and will be for the foreseeable future until new nuclear generating capacity is available. Keltbray I am sure are doing a very professional job but nonetheless this is a very short-slighted act of industrial vandalism.

Irritates me the wholesale destruction of power stations around the world! Wind and solar are inverter based and cannot provide base load and stabilise a complex grid needing large amount of system inertia and reactive power or VARs.

ferrybridge has multifuel plant 1&2 sat right next to it they were commissioned just before the cooling towers were felled noticed the 3 left over these were the 3 that got rebuilt when something went wrong just after they were first built storys on wikipedia for all to see, not long after i returned to the north those 3 & the canal loader were felled leaving no trace of ferrybridge C the only landmark you drove past on both old A1 & A1M

Using controlled demolition to take tall things down low where they can be cut up for recycle or landfill is far safer and cleaner than much slower traditional demolition. It is far cheaper to clean up once after large explosive demolition compared to contractors having to continually clean up every day. Excellent vantage points to really see the actual 2 separate stages of explosions on steel structure. The lucky guy pushing the blast button sends a small charge through Shock Tube. You can see a flash move towards structures. Then you can see much larger line of Det Cord go off that connects to blasting caps with timed delays and explosives. First explosion is the shaped charges going off and slicing through pre-notched steel columns. That is followed by the 'kicker charges' which moves steel that has been sliced seconds earlier. Once the steel sections are moved out, gravity takes over. Like breaking legs on a table. With nothing supporting it, table will tip over. The chimney bases were pre-cut, and concrete removed in direction they are going to fall. It's like felling a tree with back and front cuts. It's always amazing to watch giant chimneys actually come apart in pieces even before hitting ground. As the chimneys are falling in an arc, they are accelerating faster and faster. The stress is enough to make them break apart in midair, no extra explosives needed. Also, you can clearly see plywood boxes and other shielding like chain-link fence, fabrics, and sand to contain flying fragments from the shaped charges and kicker charges. The chimneys also had fabric wraps and sand to contain flying debris. The exclusion zone required public to be far enough away so any flying debris could not strike them. It's really bad PR when spectators who are dying to get a closer look actually die. Gunny says "Great Job... Well Done"
