I had the pleasure of staying with these guys for one night while on a bike tour 20 years ago....pure gold. They treated us like royalty, fed us and got us on our way to So America where we were biking to. One of my favorite parts of staying with them was a video of Olive testifying on CSPAN before Glickman the Secretary of Agriculture with Bill Clinton about some of the underhanded practices occurring in the ranching industry. She told Secretary Glickman (who was wearing a cowboy hat) in the testimony that she not only "wore the hat but had the brown stuff (cow manure) on her shoes". As soon as she said that Bill Clinton started cracking up. Meaning you're high and mighty and in Washington and you wear the hat but I am the person with her boots actually on the ground and you cannot fake that. Olive is one and a million and for that matter so is Demetrio.

This is my abuelita! I love her. In reality she’s my mom. I’m the last child she raised as a daughter. She’ll be 101 in May. I can watch this video over and over and over. Just to hear her taking like this melts my heart. Her health has declined in just two years. I’ll forever love her for being my mother and my father basically after my grandpo passed away. She’s part of my favorite memories. I can never repay her for taking care of me the way she did. I just promise to love her for the rest of my life and her life. I promise to be there as much as I can.

Loved this! My dad was from the Valley, grew up during the depression. Unfortunately we don't know much about that side of our family. This was great to help me understand a little more about my dad. What I know is he hopped trains to go fishing, he was a shepherd, he delivered moonshine and mota, he polished shoes, delivered papers. He did whatever he had to do after his dad died when they were migrant farming in Powell Wyoming. His mom was the Chef at the nice hotel in Alamosa. He grew up very poor, served in WW2 and left the Valley after in search of opportunity. In Denver he out himself through trade school, apprenticed and eventually became a Master Plumber and owned his own Plumbing Company. The traditions, values and sense of the Valley never left him. Thank you for sharing your story, for reminding me of our rich heritage.

Still devastating to think that my beautiful great grandma is no longer with us. Her stories were always so funny and made everyone around her laugh. We was a beautiful angel and now she can continue to shine her light in heaven with great grandpa Sam. Her existence will always be remembered as apart of Guadeloupe history. She had many names mom, grandma, great grandma, and most importantly the Avon lady. She was a caring, loving, funny, loyal soul and her spirit will continue to stay with all of us! ❤️❤️

Mr. Madrid, I plan to farm and raise animals when I move out there. Maybe we could meet up sometime and talk about this when I get out there? I already have some land there, and I'd love to hear some tips, tricks and pointers on how to keep it the way it was in the past. Hope to hear back from you sir. Have a good summer!

Lopez's explanation of "spanish" and chicano identity is an extremely valuable aspect of this interview, because it captures a true struggle to explain a rich identity that has been greatly shaped by accidents in history. As he answers, Lopez has to fit his culture and identity into the molds of white, anglo-saxon American culture. To achieve this, at times he presents false narrative and then shifts to a carefully thought out historical analysis and then goes on to almost contradict what he says in the beginning. Those who haven't been put in a similar situation will likely be unable to understand everything that's happening as Lopez tries to offer an answer to the interviewer's question.
