    Hi Joanne, I'm really excited about the potential for fully automating the painting process utilizing robot arms in the near future with the incredible progress of AI and robotics that's happening right now. Since you are the expert here I wanted to ask you how long you think it will take before we can create a painting in, say, Midjourney and then have a robot arm paint that exact picture on a canvas?

    • @JoanneHastie
      @JoanneHastie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi magnus. I just see this now. Sorry for delay. haven’t painted with my robot arm in awhile (years) but usually coding an image to paint took a couple weeks depending on the image. Also just like a human painter who knows what their strengths are and selects images that highlight their painting style, a midjourney image must be carefully selected to make sure it enhances & works with what the robot’s painting style is.

    Hi Joanne, thank you so much for sharing all this very valuable information. I have a question for you based on hours of research on the varnish/isolation subject. My head was spinning, and I thought I'd share my thoughts with you. From my understanding, the only reason you'd need an isolation coat would be if you are using a two-step system - i.e, you are using a 'removable' varnish. The isolation coat, from what I understood, is applied before the removable varnish, allowing the painting to be re-varnished in the future if required. The isolation coat protects the painting against the 'removal' of the varnish layer. The Liquitex matte varnish used in your video is permanent and non-removable, so I'm wondering if an isolation coat is required at all in your situation? I worry about using a solvent-based removable varnish due to the toxic nature of the substance and creating sufficient ventilation. Are you still varnishing in this way in 2024? I'd be keen to know if you've changed anything about your process since this video? Many thanks :)

    • @JoanneHastie
      @JoanneHastie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Susan, sorry I missed this comment. I am varnishing with isolation coat and the non removable varnish to this day. I realize the isolation coat is not needed since varnish won’t be removed. But I like applying varnish to a consistent & clean surface. Since sometimes the actual painting has various levels of pigments & mediums. I’ve notice sometimes the varnish repels/beads on the surface - probably due to oils from my skin or other contamination but an isolation coat that I don’t touch the day before varnishing solves this issue. I also like the last chance to examine the work while applying isolation coat before varnishing.

    Don't use silicone for cradling your panels, the bond won't last over time nor is it tight enough. Instead, use a water resistant wood glue like Titebond or an archival PVA framing glue like Lineco. You can buy them by the tube or by the gallon at a reasonable price.

    • @JoanneHastie
      @JoanneHastie 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I looked Lineco framing adhesives up and it says it is permanent. I am wanting to use something that can be removable as people more often than not want to change frames.

    Painting from life often comes at the price of struggling with a lot of stuff, but I can capture "my authentic experience of the place" - There is something very special about this, that cannot be forged from a picture in a studio. Photos are more beneficial for creating imaginary and idealized compositions.

    I use Golden Heavy Bodies with. Water adding retarder & wetting agent combined. I preserve the spring of the brush by using a brush washer that has a coil on the handle. This allows the brush head to be suspended within the water. This way the hairs aren't permanently bent. My stay wet palette is a butcher tray lined with cosmos blotting paper layered with being fang tracing paper... I tear it off the roll. Hope that helps.

    Make sure to calibrate your monitor first with the light you are painting with. Grab some pure white on a pallete knife, put it vertical (the same position as you would put it on the canvas), and then pull the brightness of your monitor up or down if your white is brighter or darker then the computers white. Also, try to set the monitor white balance so that its a little bit closer to the white of the white paint. The first time you compare both side by side you should see that the white on the computer is way too blue. I think these two changes makes plein air vs inside a little more compareble . Sorry if bad english, from brazil here.

    • @JoanneHastie
      @JoanneHastie ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tips! My indoor lighting is daylight 5000K (it’s whiter … but bluer than most regular light bulbs). And I use the xrite i1studio to calibrate my monitors and white balance photos with a 50% gray card and xrite passport. I’ve been wondering if to do a video on this. Since I’m calibrating monthly I don’t think the blue is there, which I think is from common yellow lighting which I’ve removed? You are first one I hear doing it to adjust to the paint. Interesting idea. 👍

    • @renatobfa
      @renatobfa ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoanneHastie Nice, so you already have a pretty good setup. I think if you calibrate the white paint from the monitor with the white paint, you probably will gain some more realism out of the painting, since they start to be a 'apples to apples' comparisson. The monitor's white usually is brighter then the white paint, unless your studio light is very bright. My monitors brightness is about 40% (and my studio lights are strong two 8000 lumens LED flood lights high up in the ceiling). Anyway, having that hability to match colors directly from the monitor is great so i think you should give it a try.

    Enjoy your painting in the forest a lot!! How did you attach and hold the paint palette container onto the easel? I have a same container, so I like to try out !

      Hi Janet, thanks for watching & the kind words. It is the Leder Easel Palette Holder. It was designed for that container in mind: www.ledereasel.com/store/p14/leder-easel-palette-holder.html#/

      Thank you so much Carole. I didn't know how I'd approach it either... and even changed my mind after the sketch. But it is easier to change plans when there is a sketch planned out.

    Joanne - Beautiful work for sure! I’m thrilled to have discovered your channel, and hopefully will be able to emulate your great example of ‘getting out there’ and leaving my critic behind!! Greetings from the West End.

      Always lovely to meet a local painter. Keep it easy as possible to develop the habit... I need this advice. I keep making epic journeys, which takes more time and planning. This view is near my home on my way to the post office.

    "you start seeing paintings everywhere" :) And colours swirling in the sink or on the ceiling, as the mind makes up colours combinations. The joy of it. Happy painting.

      A green is no longer green... you can tell which blue, yellow pigments are in it and if a warm pigment is in it.

    Oh my this was lovely! What colours did you use for the last mountain on the plein air painting? What are your pallette colours?

    • @JoanneHastie
      @JoanneHastie ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! Unfortunately my palette is not refined.... yet. I have been carrying golden acrylic paints - my standard palette is their "Modern Palette": Quin. Magenta, Napthol Red, Medium & Light Cad Yellow, Phthalo Blue and Phthalo Green and Anthro Blue. But I have been also using ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna (the two mix a nice gray that can be warmed or cooled with the blue or sienna). And of course Titanium White. I recently bought the Golden "Acrylic SoFlat" paints. I find the colors are quite muted, lack vibrancy - so I wont buy them again. They also don't come in the warm colors (i.e. Magenta). But the large container of paint has been wonderful for outdoors since the volume is so big the paint does not dry. So I have been using them in hopes to keep and reuse the container when they are empty. But here is a link to the modern color set that is my starting point: www.amazon.ca/dp/B007G8J95G?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzjoanneha-20&creativeASIN=B007G8J95G&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.3SW2MBCL29MQZ&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ons_mixed_d_asin

      Thank you for listing your colours. I have recently heard from anither artiist that Golden is discontinuing Quin Magenta.
