    I would take the Gibby 498T and 490R over the Lollar's any day. The 498T and 490R are hotter and have a better harmonic response. It really is a matter of personal preference. However, after playing Gibsons and every other kind of guitar for over 40 years, the 498T and 490R are some of the best pickups ever made. The specs match of exceed Duncans and Dimarzios.

    I didn't hear any significant difference with anything you did. I have a 65 Reissue which sounds pretty good to me, kind of like most Fender amps. To tell the truth I think all the hype about the old amps being better is to justify the crazy prices people ask for them, and any difference between the old ones and new ones IMHO is very subtle. Over the years I've had a few of the older ones, a blackface Bandmaster (it was OK), a Blackface Bassman (great bass amp for small venues, used for bass in a 3 piece acoustic band), a silverface Quad Reverb (loud and very very heavy, weird Master Volume control), a Super 60 rackmount (OK), and now a 65 Deluxe Reissue (probably the best of all of them). BTW I sold all of the others with no regrets, except for maybe the Bassman, and I wish I still had that one.

      Thanks Wingman! I don't have as much experience with the older stuff as you do but I will say the pieces that I have that are older have a certain mojo that newer gear doesn't. I take that BF deluxe reverb to cool gigs and people notice it. But you're right - is it a 2X improvement? No but for cool gigs and recordings I always bring the vintage stuff if I can

      @@JonMonter For what it's worth, I've done a couple of things to my RI Deluxe that I think improved it quite a bit.. Vintage 30 Celestion - big difference, brings outs the mids a bit, overall I think it's just a much nicer sounding speaker (thanks to Zac Childs recommendation), old USA made GE power tubes, also swapped out the rectifier tube for an old USA Truetone. I quit the Russian, Chinese tubes as I think they are junk. WIth the old amps I had I honestly can't remember ever having to replace tubes.. not so with the Russian & Chinese junk. My amp is one of the early Reissues with a fake (non functional) polarity switch which I had wired to the bright cap on the Vibrato channel so the bright cap is now switchable... subtle but noticeable at low volumes.

    As you may have noticed the bright cap has maximum effect at lower settings of the volume control, and progressively less as you turn it up. This is because the cap is bypassing the series element of the volume control. At 10 there will be effectively no difference.

    Great video. Just got the Space in 2023 and I'm learning how to do the "deep dive" with this unit and using an expression pedal. I like the H9 software to create/modify patches. This pedal is overwhelming with what it can do, like my Boss DD500 delay, but it's fun to play around with to come up with unique sounds. I'm most confused by the Dynaverb section - I haven't quite figured out how it works (I know it's ducking/limiting, etc.) to create a useful patch. I have been playing acoustic, electric guitar and bass in church worship teams for over 25 years.

    To my ears I prefer the fender deluxe. The soldano sounded better in the mix, but on its own I didn't like it. The orange isn't the most sparkly clean but I do feel it out weighed the marshall... I found the Marshall to be a little boring but was still better than the soldano played on its on with no mix. All great amps and all useful, I think fender still King of the cleans. But that being said, in a playing out setting most people is not going to pay too much unless of course there are other but nine times out of 10 people just want to feel the groove.

      Hey Johnny! Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching the video. Yeah I love the fenders as well! You are totally right that most people just want to feel the music and probably don't know what a 'bad' clean tone is besides sounding totally wacky or out of tune. But I like bringing that '65 deluxe reverb out - sounds so great and gives me a little 'street' cred that bleeds into my playing ya know?

    I think you might want to have a Les Paul handy that has the stock pick ups. Listening to this on my headphones I really like the sound of the stock pick ups, plain clean. They’re brassier rounder and more articulated. However, when you go into overdrive, crunch or distortion, that’s where the PAF style pick ups really shine. The hotter stock pick ups tend to get muddier and crunchier. The tone is more brash than brass. The PAF style low output, pick ups really love to be driven. It’s where they’re best and, quite frankly, it’s what they’re most coveted for. everyone wants to hold Gibson burst tone. I just ordered a Les Paul and I’m putting these high winds in it.

Funny, because I own an Orange Rocker 32 and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III, (Also a Bogner/Line 6 DT50 212, Blackstar HT5R, Yamaha THR10 but no ACTUAL Marshall...yet lol). I don't have any actual pedals yet. I have a Line 6 HD500X and an Eleven Rack I use for effects. I suspect a few well chosen pedals would sound better than the effects I have. Like maybe a TS9 going into an OCD into the Orange. Maybe a Strymon Timeline in the effects loop of the Hot Rod. But I have analysis paralysis and haven't bought any. MIM Strat, Epi 335 Ultra, Jay Thurston Les Paul, James Tyler Variax 69S, Epi SG, Furch Vintage 2 RS-SR and some Yamaha flat tops, and a classical from Japan in the 70s. Lotta gear collected since 1976 or so. Lotta playing. Not a lot of knowledge on how to turn the knobs to get specific sounds. Not a lot of knowledge on what gear sounds like what. I've come across so many fanboys of guitar brands that believe that a few QC issues aren't a big deal on a $3000 guitar. It's one thing to buy a used Gibson LP from someone that used it a lot, and it has some wear, maybe a couple of dings, it's another when that kind of stuff comes straight from the factory for full price. Can you still enjoy a guitar when the finish isn't perfect, or the binding isn't cut inconsistently, or when the nubs on the fret ends aren't perfect? Yes. Those things wouldn't affect how much I enjoy the sounds and playability of a guitar. In that sense, these issues are no problem. But, when you are buying a guitar from the factory, and it passes a bunch of hands, goes for a final inspection, and they sign off on the guitar, then that is an issue. That's an issue that speaks to how the company views it's customers. Gibson knows they have a built in base of fans that are brand loyal. To them, Gibson can do no wrong. These people are so emotionally tied to the brand, it becomes part of their identity. The fact that they will sell people a $3000 guitar, and know people will accept any issue it has, speaks volumes. And, when a company is so caught up in suing other brands for making their guitars better than they are, instead of putting that energy and money into making a better guitar is insulting to a player. You will absolutely have issues with a guitar once in a while. Even $5000 guitars may have something. But, you shouldn't be expected to pay full price for a guitar that has some flaws. If Gibson or Fender wants to allow B-Stock guitars, they should ask for B-Stock pricing. It's as simple as that. Sure, I would absolutely buy a Gibson with a hair under the clear coat. but I want it for less, because in 20 years when I may sell it, someone is going to point out that hair, and expect to pay less for it.

    • @JonMonter
      @JonMonter ปีที่แล้ว

      Coud not agree more 'it's always something'. That moron at Guitar Center where I bought my custom is a prime example - he said he 'didn't even look for flaws' on his 8k+ R8 or whatever he had. Granted he probably wanted to make the sale but still its mind boggling people's ultra loyalty to the brand. I still LOVE my Gibsons, and another LP or maybe an SG is 100% in my future, but I will not buy new and I will do my homework like I did on my R9 and that thing is a beast. We should be glad there are so many great examples of Gibson guitars out there for us to play and buy, unfortunately there's a bunch of lemons out there too. Thanks again for watching

His answer " Uncle Doug It's parallel to the cabinet speaker jack, so the two jacks are an either/or arrangement: You can only use one jack at a time, i.e. unplug the cabinet speaker and then plug in an external speaker.....never both at the same time. " I asked about ohm / load and he hasnt answered yet

    I know everyone has their own conceptions about what defines certain tones, such as "sparkly", but I was confused because I've heard Fenders, Marshalls and even Soldanos be much more sparkly sounding than the examples here. Then I noticed that you had the treble set *below 5* on all of them. Not trying to be an ass about it, but really? Treble and presence are precisely where you get sparkle from.

      To tell you the truth I'm never happy with the way my guitars sound on these videos. I can never get it to sound even in the ballpark from what I hear in the room (mic placement? no outboard gear? I don't know). I tried to get the best tone I could with each amp. But about the treble - I find too much treble harsh sounding - maybe thats where the sparkle is - but in the room the fenders sound great, and to my ears pretty 'sparkly'. Thanks for watching

      @@darwinsaye yeah man I really feel to do these kinds of videos you need to be a competent recording engineer too. Im just recording these with an Apollo X4 into Garage Band, so not exactly a super duper set up as far as recording stuff goes. Also im sort of throwing up the mic by aiming 'at the cone' but I know in college they teach whole classes on mic placement, so there's some improvement to be had there as well. Thanks again mk win

    First, playing a gibson guitar through a fender amp is not what leo invisioned when designed so not the tone you are playing at all.

      @noel3422 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, was a quip oh well, did you see hendrix trying to get a decent tone from his gibson v playing on a marshall amp? You are mixing things that don't mix, hendrix started out with sunn amps and then to fender amps then to marshall amps but mostly used a fender guitar, this man made his best music on a fender strat played through a modified marshall amp.

    Great video! I love Les Paul's but sadly am sending a Studio I received last week back due to cosmetic issues. Also in the last year I've returned a Standard with similar problems. Also in 2016 I received an SG with paint overspray! My conclusion? I LOVE the Les Paul but these things are unacceptable period. How QC can sign off on these defects to me defies logic

      @JonMonter ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey minigmac! Thanks for watching. Yes im with you - how the hell can anyone let these guitars leave the factory with such obvious issues? It makes no sense. Im sure you've googled Gibson QC problems and some pics that come up are crazy. Maybe it was take your kid to work day and some 5 year old signed the QC paperwork. I love Gibsons too so I will buy another LP at some point but will have to see it in person before making the purchase. I hope you get the LP of your dreams and Merry Christmas

    Thank you for helping me id and locate the 47pf capacitor. It sits on the Vibrato Channel Volume pot. Regarding input 1 for single coil and input 2 for humbucking pickups. That really twisted my brain around. I've never ever heard that before. Did you learn that from another source or just conclude it yourself. It sounds logical, I'm just blown that I've never heard that before. I've been using Fender amps since 1964.

    • @JonMonter
      @JonMonter ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Carl, I never heard it before either - my tech told me about it. Check out my channel b/c I re did the input comparison - you cannot have cables into both inputs b/c it negates the resistor in input 2. But its a game changer on the deluxe - you can get cleaner cleans at a higher volume with hum buckers
