The Four Foot WorkShop
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ก.พ. 2022
With limited space in my apartment, I only have a four foot counter to work on, but it's plenty of room for my hobbies. With the exception of the occasional electric hand drill, that I use sparingly, all of my lures are made with hand tools. It takes longer to make anything this way, but I'm in no hurry, this is just a hobby that makes my retirement even more enjoyable.
Most of the fishing lures I make aren't just copies of what you find in a sporting goods store. I try new ideas or at least put a twist on an already proven lure design. For me, the main fish-attracting characteristic of any successful lure is the action of the lure (which can include sound), followed by its shape and lastly its color.
I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here, just looking at fishing lures from a slightly different perspective!

Making a Wooden Octopus Twitchbait!
I’ve only seen soft plastic octopus fishing lures on the internet, but no hard body octopi, so I thought I’d make one out of wood!

This is just another novelty lure with a lot of decals that nonetheless catches fish and is fun to fish with.

Found some interesting pieces of driftwood along the shore of Lake St. Clair and decided to make a lure out of one of them.
Making a Four Segment Jerkbait!
มุมมอง 9122 หลายเดือนก่อน
I just felt like making a jerkbait with more than three segments, so nothing innovative here. Although I did try something new for me, by attaching the tail with a ball bearing swivel to see if it would add more movement or even cause the tail to spin when retrieved! Still undecided if that made much of a difference to the action of the lure, but I like the looks : )
Making the “Original” Pencil Lure!
มุมมอง 2042 หลายเดือนก่อน
I wanted to make a genuine pencil shaped lure to see if I could actually catch fish with it. My plan is to twitch the lure as it floats on the surface, creating a disturbance in the water that elicits a fish strike, at least that’s the plan!
Making a Wooden Swimbait with Lexan Pectoral Fins!
มุมมอง 6193 หลายเดือนก่อน
I wanted to attach polycarbonate pectoral fins to this swimbait to give the lure a larger more realistic profile when viewed from underneath or above, making it easier for predators to spot. I also wanted to experiment a little and see if the fins would affect the swim action of the lure. Turns out, if the fins are attached parallel to the lure (as in the video), the lure swims fine. But if the...
Making Small, Flat, Thin Fishing Lures!
มุมมอง 3623 หลายเดือนก่อน
These are very simple lures using the flat surface of the wood to apply full body decals of fish that were printed on clear waterslide paper. Easy to make and fun to fish with, especially in shallow water since they only dive about a foot below the surface.
Making a Topwater Snake Lure with Open Mouth!
มุมมอง 5733 หลายเดือนก่อน
I made this lure in 2023, but rarely fished with it because it requires somewhat calm water to work effectively. The open mouth of the snake acts like the lip on a crank bait and causes the lure to wobble, giving it a very lifelike action.
Making a M.C. Escher Inspired Wooden Swimbait!
มุมมอง 1.6K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
I thought of this design after viewing a number of drawings by M.C. Escher, some of which contain unusual renderings of fish. A lot of his work is very symmetrical often turning into optical illusions. I tried to mimic his style with this swimbait.
Making a Popper / Jitterbug Blended Lure!
มุมมอง 2K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
This lure is similar to the original Jitterbug with its action when retrieved, but instead of attaching a concave metal lip to the front, I integrated that feature into a single piece of wood. It also works well as a popper when twitched causing a nice splash. I also added a rattle to the lure for a little extra noise.

Making a “Big-Eyed”, Hard-Body Swimbait!
มุมมอง 7596 หลายเดือนก่อน
Like the title says, this is a swimbait with ¾” BIG eyes. Unfortunately, this is another lure that got eaten by the lake bottom rocks and not a fish!
Making a Magnetic Lure Turner for Drying Epoxy Coatings!
มุมมอง 3737 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my solution for drying lures when using an epoxy clear coat. The stainless steel forceps work great to hold the lures and the magnet secures them to the rotisserie turner. The magnet alone is strong enough to easily hold lures of 2 ounces or less without falling off. For heavier baits, I might use a small plastic clamp to secure the forceps a little better, as insurance! Parts List: ITE...
Making a Deer Antler Spinner Bait!
มุมมอง 2838 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had a piece of deer antler acquired long ago and thought it might be fun and challenging to make a fishing lure out of it. It weighs ¾ oz. by itself and no buoyancy to help slow the drop when it hits the water (this is definitely a deeper water lure). Unfortunately, I only fish from shore at a very limited number of locations and nowhere deep enough to test this lure, therefore no field test ...
Making a Motorcycle Lure to Top a Trophy for my Local Club!
มุมมอง 1199 หลายเดือนก่อน
Anyone in my Triumph motorcycle club who wins “Rider of the Year” is obligated to make a trophy for the next year’s winner. Since I won in 2022, this is my creation for the 2023 winner. I thought that since I enjoy making fishing lures, I would incorporate one into the trophy. Much like real motorcycles having poor aerodynamics, this lure has somewhat poor hydrodynamics because of its flat shap...

Hi. Love your vídeos!!! Can you talk me where can I buy lead thead like the one you use? Thanks a lot!!!
I buy my lead wire from "The Bullet Weights Store" on Amazon. It comes in various thicknesses, but the one I use most is the 1/4" thick wire that I use as ballast on most of my lures.
@@thefourfootworkshop7004 thank you very much!
MUITO ESPECTACULAR
congrats, crazy idea, brand new action lure
Superb!
love lures like this new sub earned
very cool mate 👌
Nice work 👍
Cooool work🎉🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦👍
Very Nice 😅
I really appreciate their art of making bait, but dealing with the fish they catch is not nice. Maybe in the future you will simply use a landing net for the sake of the animals. 😉👍🏻 Many greetings from Germany.
The problem wasn’t the lack of a landing net with this fish (although it would have helped), it was the fact that it took the lure deep in its mouth and was extremely difficult to extract without hurting the fish, a landing net wouldn’t have changed that. In the end, the fish swam away and hopefully recovered. It’s unfortunate that some catch and release fish don’t survive, but the reality is some don’t! Every fisherman I know has their own story of the one that didn’t make it and it’s always with a sense of sadness.
It´s a Crankbait not a Jerkbait, but nice work buddy and the pike seem to like it.👌
I always thought that jerkbaits are generally long and slender (like this lure) and can be retrieved at various speeds and/or jerked with the rod to give the appearance of a wounded bait fish (as I demonstrated with this lure in a tub of water). Crankbaits, on the other hand, are generally short and stubby (with a variety of bill shapes) and get a steady retrieve at various speeds to mimic a bait fish. At least that’s what I thought, I guess I was wrong? Thanks for the correction!
@@thefourfootworkshop7004 I've always wanted to find a definitive description for types of lures, so I've conducted searches on the internet. What I've only been able to find is conflict. It seems that lots of folks have varying ideas and definition of what different styles of lures are called, for instance, a Swim Bait is a very broad spectrum of hard body and soft body lures. Some lures can even be hybrid. So, I have attempted to think outside my paradigm and understand it may be the country or region one is from, or simply what someone's great granddaddy said, that may determine what they call it.
I appreciate your design brother
Good job, I'll make a musky sized whopper .
👍👍👍
Very nice
What spray can clear coat are you applying before adding your decals? Is it Acrylic? Thanks. You know, some channels don't float test or swim test their lures at all. I feel these are very important important tests for lures and should be included in the build video. You provide is, not only a float test, but usually two swim tests, indoor and out in the field. Thank you for the awesome videos you produce!
The clear coat I use is just an all purpose, fast drying, non-yellowing, UV resistant spray made by Rust-Oleum; can be found at any hardware store (it’s not acrylic). I agree, anyone making videos of their homemade lures should show the action of the lure in water. I suspect that some don’t do this because it not only takes extra effort, but their lure might not perform very well! Thanks for the comments!
@@thefourfootworkshop7004 Thanks so much Gary! Have a great day.
do you think having one joint would have changed the action or in what way?
I think with just the one joint in the front, the action would have been the same. If you noticed toward the end of the video showing the lure action in the water, the rear joint doesn't move at all.
Fun new Intro! Had to watch it a second time.
Thank you I love the open mouth and this is the best snake lure I have ever seen
Круто !
This is a really nice looking ,good performing Bait. One of your finest.
Such great idea and execution. This would be so fun to fish with.
Few years ago i visited Escher's exhibition here in Rome, where i live, at Cloister of Bramante. It was stunning!!!
This lure is great in so many ways! I have made both poppers and Jitterbugs, but nothing like this. Although my Jitterbugs work quite well, I never liked how the metal lip caused the head to sink in the water, leaving the tail as the only part floating. The wooden cup in the face makes your float. You carved that with the skill of making a wooden spoon, without the spoon cutting knife. I read your a comment from 11 hours ago that you hand draw your decals! Wow! I know most of your tool work is done by hand, but I didn't know these were hand made as well. Much respect! The more hand work I do on a lure, the better I feel about it being hand-crafted. For some reason, this lure reminded me of your FrogFish hybrid that I also really liked! Love the fearsome teeth!
Brilliant thanks for thr up load
Great looking lure I haven’t seen any other lure that come close to yours If you don’t mind what kind of program do you use for your stencil
When you say “stencil” I assume you mean decals? The decals I draw by hand, scan them into my computer then print on clear waterslide paper using my inkjet printer. The only “program” I use for this is Microsoft Word.
Sample or pdf ,👍👍👍🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Hi !! Fantastic post , love it . Lure has a g8 action though exorbitant wobbling action, but for sure it will catch fish. You took correct decision for not changing the bib. Love your post, thanks again mate. Regards
Love the snake head I think you are a great lure maker Just wanted to know if you could show the snake that you made a while back Loved it I think it is the best snake lure I have ever seen
I really haven't had much of a chance to fish with that lure, but if I do (and catch a fish with it), I'll put it back on my channel.
Ok thanks
😂😂😂 this is what happens hope you had fun making it sorry for the loss 😢 great job on the lure and video
great video! sorry for the ending! had an amazing swimming action. keep on going! thanks
Brilliant idea mate 👍👍
The new intro was fun!
Did you catch anything? I made one out of an antler "bottle opener" and it had terrible action
January here in Michigan means ice on lakes and nowhere to test the antler lure at this time. It’s a heavy, fast sinking lure made for deeper water which, even in warm weather, I don’t have access to since I only fish from shore. I would think the action would be similar to any spinner bait where the blade movement is what attracts the fish, but I may never find out!
Definitely subscribed! I love this kind of content and the fact that you only use a 4 foot workspace!
By the way - is the center of gravity also the center of lift+gravity, if this piece of antler is submerged ? 🤔
When I say “center of gravity”, I mean the balance point of the piece of antler. I’m not sure what you mean by “center of lift” with a structure that’s basically cylindrical in shape. If there is any lift with this lure (unlike an airplane with wings), it has to be very minimal. But then again, I’m not an engineer so what do I know? I wanted the treble hook placed at the balance point to keep the lure level (horizontal) as it sinks or at least close to level. The antler is very dense with almost zero buoyancy. Thanks for the comment!
@@thefourfootworkshop7004 I just wondered if the center of gravity is still at the same location if the antler is submerged in water ? Possibly doesn't matter as much though.

Very cool idea! I'd prefer it to be a 1200r but I'm biased, lol.
Do a work shop tour 👍
Truly a one of a kind! Really cool!
Congrats on the Win! I love the mirror mount.
Very nice work well crafted and a great video to go with it. It’s a real shame that you lost it after all the effort you put into building the lure and creating a great video as well. Think I would find a less snaggy area to fish or but a mask and snorkel and go in after it. 👍🎣
That’s a unique lure! Nice workmanship as usual! Can I ask what kind of pen you use for signing the bottom? Or is that a decal as well? Thanks again! 🎣🇨🇦👍🏻
My signature is a decal also, I was never good at cursive writing. The final result was a culmination of about 30 attempts and picking the best one then reducing it in size. One of the reasons I use decals so much in my lures is because I no longer have the steadiness in my hands that I had when I was younger.
👏👍🎣🎣🎣

Looks good I enjoy watching your videos
Great lure! Horrible luck. Snorkel , mask and fins should be the next thing you buy! 😂 Looking forward to the next one. 👍🏻🎣🇨🇦
