Football has always felt like the odd one when it comes to its Olympic tournament. Every other sport takes it very seriously, to the point where the Olympic tournament and their World Cup are on par, unless some consider the Olympic tournament to be a bit more important. Tennis and Cycling do have their best players compete. You don't see them snubbing it because "oh it's not Wimbledon/the Tour de France so who cares". Basketball sees the biggest stars competing. But then football treats it like t's a random youth competition, not that much of a deal. Imagine if this was the case, with the best teams in the World actually competing. Perhaps, seasons in the Top Leagues in Europe would start on September on an Olympic year specifically to give their players some rest (or maybe take into consideration that their seasons begin with their stars competing elsewhere)
