    A great way to understand what he's talking about with the overtones, or harmonics, is to silently depress the RH E and G then play three measures of the LH without sustaining pedal and see how they sound after you've let go the LH. Try it!

    musically, the kid is constitutionally unable to plumb the depths. It's a cultural conditioning issue. Far-Easterners are relatively understated emotionally, reserved.

  • @PaulJones-oj4kr

    the thing about far-Easterners is that their nervous systems are not amenable to the spirit of Western music. They don't have the pathos, the depth. They gloss over the depth of the details, the minute emotionalism. Technically, they're fine. But doesn't technique include what I am talking about.

    • @frankgrimeson
      @frankgrimeson 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      At her level there's quite a bit of "why" conveyed when he shows her "how" to do something, by virtue of a lot of unspoken shared knowledge (musical, piano-playing physiology, etc.) between the two. And, ultimately, she may discard some of his recommendations as everyone's "ideal" interpretation won't be the same. But this type of teaching would indeed be superficial if the student was less advanced.

    Marvelous teacher with such a refined touch, so much to learn from him. She is like so many similar student I have seen who are convinced that once they can keep up with the metronome over the entire piece using whatever inadequate touch and buldozing through that they deserve to perform the piece. As far as i am concerned i think this student cannot play this piece, this is not playing the piece, it's rushing through it - may give what may -. I am sure Chopin would be horrified not by her playing but by her lack of realizing that hers is not a musical approach. And then there are so many of them, and when they get a bit better than her, and are able to add some dynamics they think they're total masters when they don't understand a thing about music. It must be said most of them are from the far east. They think speed is the only thing that matters. I would be ashamed, I don't even think she should be there taking the place of other more musical student who maybe does not play fast yet but has musicality.
