A Major Revelation for Piano Players
stan.store/martinfinnmusic
You can download my finger guides or my short piano course by clicking the link above.
I discovered a simple hack that may just change your scale-playing life!
#MajorRevelation #KeyboardSecrets #ScalePatterns #MusicTheory #LearnPiano #InstantPlay #learnpianoscalesfast #howtoplaypianoscaleseasily
Every time I teach this to a student they say it’s a major revelation
And here it is..
If you look at the keyboard you’ll see that the white keys take up far more space than the black keys
But if you look at just the tops of them they are all exactly same width. They are all in fact just individual pitches going up and down in half steps exactly like the frets on a guitar
We can think of scales, chords and melodies as just patterns that are moveable
Let’s take a sheet of paper and mark out the scale of C major. We now have the code for all major scales and if we place the first mark on any tonic note it will reveal the entire scale in that key. Here’s D major, here’s A major. Even a key you’ve been afraid of like Eb!
This can be done with chords too. Here is C7. We can move this down three semitones and get A7.
If you need the correct fingering for all these scales you can download my handy finger guides from my store (the link is in description and my profile). I’ve got major, minor, pentatonic and blues scales. They print in seconds and will give you instant results.
I hope you have fun with this. Don’t forget to like share and Follow me for more!!

Blackbird by Paul McCartney - Piano Replica

I can play Blackbird on guitar but I never worked it out properly on the piano until now. It was the Beyonce version that gave me a renewed interest in the song. The chords are absolutely beautiful and it is amazing to think that every single one of them have a G note (notice that I am playing a G throughout with my left hand thumb!). I didn't realise until recently also that Paul wrote it abou...

do you have anything like this for guitar ?
Not yet but I may soon!
@@martinfinnmusic awesome can wait for that. i’ve been wanting to know guitar hacks like this piano jack that. make this so so much easier to understand
Impressive and insightful!
Thank you very much! Stay tuned for more. :)
Great work
Thank you, Carl. Much appreciated. :)
the 7th and 8th notes appear to not line up right in this video. have u fixed this since uploading the video?
Hi there, the up to date printable finger guides are more accurate but even so there is a minute compromise that has to be made for some keys so that the marks don’t line up with the dead centre of the keys. Not enough to make a functional difference but it is there. Well spotted!
Very nice Martin ! What about your fellow Irishman Gilbert O ' Sullivan.? He had his own style of playing piano and wrote a few classics. Sad to say , he's kind of forgotten today . Such is fame...🙏
Great idea. I love Gilbert and you’re right - he doesn’t get half enough credit these days. A pure master. Alone Again Naturally is a whole world in a song.
You never give me your money is a nice challenge. Hey Jude is nothing compared to what he does on that
You’re right there. There’s a lot more going on in that one. I have an in-depth video on his four main styles if you haven’t seen it already. :)
Excellent thanks you very much 😊
You're welcome 😊
I thought I had a pretty good handle on most of Elton's habits and tricks, but your insightful analysis and playing alerted me to some tiny nuances, which I recognise as important on hearing them isolated. For instance, the primary accent falling on the anticipated (2&) backbeat chords of "Your Song", which really brings the groove to life.
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, I had the same experience when I discovered a great book called How To Play Elton John with accurate transcriptions. So many things in there that were so familiar to my ear but that I had never known how to play. A game changer for me. Also, it’s essential that you listen to the isolated piano tracks. A lot of them are on TH-cam. Good luck with it all. :)
my grandads mothers now sisters house is the door behind the litton fountain... O'driscoll
also the pub trickies i remember and my aunty owns olive owned the salon
Thank you for that. Cloyne is so lovely.
I'd like to see your breakdown of McCartney's collaboration with Elvis Costello 🙂
Until this moment I had no idea that they collaborated. I’ll have to go study!
They've written together many times but you can really hear both their writing styles on the 'Spike' album. Tracks 'Veronica' and 'Pads, Paws and Claws' 😀
Great video. I love syncopation in music
Yes, me too. It’s what makes it all rock. :)
Great information 👍 I'm really into Elton's style of playing 🎹
Thank you, Andrew. Yes, he’s such a masterful composer, singer and piano player. I don’t even know which is the right order for those!!
great content mannnn, just what i needed, please post more! thanksssss
My pleasure! I’m glad you liked it. Stay tuned. :)
You always amaze me..just make it look so easy...this is another one i will test out...i will run out of paper watching you and all the paperwork ......thank you
Haha! Brilliant. I’m delighted you liked this one. I find it fascinating that music works so beautifully and evenly as well as oddly and then in combination of the two. Keep watching. :)
Awsome ! ♫ ♪ I did'nt even kwow George could play the piano.
Thank you. Yes, he did a bit. He liked that the piano offered him new possibilities. I know this feeling as I write too and when I play the guitar, I’ll often come up with things I never could on the piano because to be honest I don’t know what I’m playing. I just know that it sounds good!
Quien suena bien es el pianista, este teclado en mi opinión suena muy horrible a comparación de otros pianos digitales, pero su diseño es bonito❤
Having translated this, I thank you for the compliment. Re the product - as with all these things it’s a trade off but I would rather the value came more in the sound than the style!
Did tbe original players know thirds and scales etc or just by ear? Great lesson by the way Thanx
Thanks 🙏. So, I think those by-ear players of old must have some system of playing these things whether in a formal way by naming things like chords and scales precisely or just by pure feel and a great ear. The one thing I do know is that the great players aren’t doing anything by accident. They know what to hit so that it sounds good. There’s no other way!
What a fantastic and accurate overview of all the songs we love from Billy. Thanks a lot.
Thank you, Paul. That’s very much appreciated. I was obsessed with Billy Joel as a teenager. Now I just love him. 😀
Are the tops of all the keys really the same width though? 🤔 D and E don’t appear to be, for example 🤔
Okay, there are tiny variations but the difference that it makes in practice when using the finger guides is only minuscule. Try it!
Where is it possible to find the related music sheets?
Hi there, tutorials by Hugo are all great. :)

Thank you so much, Bernard. I love reading your reactions too. I’m fascinated by this concept. ❤

Fantastic, thanks.
Thank you, Mike.

I really should. Thanks, Joe!
So inspiring! I always wanted to learn the piano since a young girl. I used to beg and cry myself to sleep because I ALWAYS got the answer "no". My mother who I did love dearly, my dad too but he never involved himself much in us kids.~~ she always said " we can't afford it" . Id ask if I could take lesson's in school, they were offering kids to learn FREE at school~~ my mom would say " you would have nothing to practice on, we can't afford to buy a piano. I used to THINK, would nevrr say, it ti them but " yeah, but you both can afford cigarettes and go buy your liquor in Tijuana every month. Id just go cry & cry I wanted to learn so bad. They did buy me a little 6 chord electric organ one Christmas, and Id bang all kinds of songs out ' by ear"...Im so gkad I had that but it wasn't the same at all. Id go over to 2 friends house's when they would take piano lessons. The teacherswouldd hear me and think I was taking lessons, and Id say no, my parent's say no. The piano teachers were flabbergasted, they both said, " Well sweetheart, you should take lessons, omg, you have such an ear for piano "!!!! Then life, career, marriage, children all kept ne busy. Both children never asked to play an instrument ~ they would have got to in a heartbeat! Now, Im alone, lost my wonderful husband inly 55, healthy the best guy in the world. He had a fatal fall to his head, brain stem, sounal cord contusion 35 years of marriage over in 1 night. Thst was 13 years ago. Its just me & my white Labrador boy 2.5 years old. Guess what, I BOUGHT A PIANO at 72 years young!!! Im getting all my piano books out ( yes, I bought piano instruction books, just to havein case 1 day I could use them!)~~~ well I HAVE!! I just watched this inspiring video!!! Paul McCartney can't read music but he can play piano~~ that gives me mega hope!!!!!!!! Thank you~~ my reply is very long, think 8 needed to vent a little! K, off to the " black & whites"!!!!🥰🎵🎶🎹

This is true. Early songs of his had a lot of country influence.
Perfect 5. Captures the essence of Macca to the point of being spooky!
Thank you, Allan!
Brilliant upload and interprétation dear Martin....Bernard
Hi Bernard, thank you for that! There’s no point in doing this impression on the school run only. 😂
Thanks!
Thank you, Westfield! You are very kind. I really do appreciate your generosity. :)
My vote was 4. Btw I noticed a lot of Beatles songs translate beautifully to the piano because of their use of lovely chords and melodies. And I Love Her and Here There and Everywhere sounded so awesome. I also heard someone play “I’ll Get You” and that too sounded beautiful.
Thank you, Westfield. Yes, they really do work so well on piano, don’t they? It’s such a pleasure to play through the catalogue and savour those beautiful chords and melodies. :)
You got me there for a minute😊
😂 I love it!
