I was once told by a Young Salvation army officer that in order to join, you had to be invited by God himself. Is this still the case?

I was once informed by a Salvation Army Soldier than in order to join, you must have received a direct and personal calling from God. This was prior to the existence of the internet, but telephones and letters were in regular use. May I ask, in what form does the Almighty communicate his invitation?
