The Search For Patient Peter Russel's Cave
มุมมอง 8K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
Peter Russel was a long-time patient at Napa’s Asylum for the Insane. He was known for being handy with machinery, for his prodigious ability to capture small animals, and for creating a grotto - or cave - in which he lived for an unknown amount of time. In this video, we go on a search for Peter Russel’s Grotto.
Red Rock Canyon: The best reason to visit Vegas
มุมมอง 110ปีที่แล้ว
It was December and raining in Arizona and Utah, so we settled on a trip to the Vegas area. We were impressed! This video covers the Blue Diamond trail system, Flow Job to Ebb 'n' Flow, and a few Cowboy trails, including Kibbles and Bits and Bomb Voyage.
2022 THE YEAR IN REVIEW
มุมมอง 772 ปีที่แล้ว
It's been a busy year, with travel a new job. We got in a trip to Park City, Utah, and Sun Valley, Idaho. We raced cyclocross for the first time, and the AFM held a special race at Laguna Seca.
A solo MTB trip through the Sonoran Desert
มุมมอง 3172 ปีที่แล้ว
June is not the best time to visit the desert, but I thought if I prepared carefully, it would be feasible. Here I review the Estrella Foothills Loop, Hawes, the Sonoran Desert Loop, and Brown's Ranch (North and South Diablo trails, specifically).
Part II: Patient stories from the old Napa State Hospital
มุมมอง 10K2 ปีที่แล้ว
While researching Skyline and its relationship to the historic Napa Asylum, I turned up information about a number of individual patients who were treated at the institution. This is the second of two videos highlighting their stories. It covers Montee Ledderhos, the youngest patient to be treated at an asylum in his day, the dam watchman, two residents of the Hermitage, and the run of suicides...

Popular with skiers, we thought we'd see what Copper Mountain was like by mountain bike. A babbling creek, wildflowers, and stunning views made for the quintessential Colorado experience.
Part III: The history behind the mystery of Skyline Wilderness Park
มุมมอง 2.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video we cover odds and ends, especially loose ends. We make a trip behind the hospital to answer one more question. Note to viewers: This video is one of a three-part series created in 2021. In 2022, the three videos were consolidated into one, 42-minute video, and placed on a TH-cam channel created for Skyline Wilderness Park. While they are very similar to one another, there are key ...

Highlights of our 2021 SW Utah trip
มุมมอง 3023 ปีที่แล้ว
We went in blind, picked five rides, and they made for a pretty nice progression. Shown here are Wire Mesa, Church Rocks, Guacamole, Gooseberry, and Bearclaw Poppy. A few individual videos are below. My personal favorite was Guacamole. Wire Mesa: th-cam.com/video/Z2buRdx6ENo/w-d-xo.html Guacamole: th-cam.com/video/JzT-I2fW_-Q/w-d-xo.html Gooseberry Mesa: th-cam.com/video/tJxCRNndTmU/w-d-xo.html
Cliffs galore on Gooseberry Mesa!

Beyond my riding ability, but I still had a blast. Gooseberry Point made my stomach churn! Here's our video of Guacamole if you'd like to compare the terrain: th-cam.com/video/JzT-I2fW_-Q/w-d-xo.html Guac was more fun to ride; Gooseberry was more photogenic. Take your pick.

I worked there . Loved the job but the supervisors are very shady and racist. A lot of extremely shady illegal business goes on there. They got rid of me because I know too much. Period.
I’ve been working here for 5 years. It’s a very lovely location with wild turkeys, deer, peacocks and other wildlife all around.
me and my freinds went into the cave goes back a ways and opens up but it’s man made a and all hand carved
Is this the best mtb trail riding close to Willis??
This is so fascinating! Thank you for sharing! Going to find it asap! I’ve always had a huge obsession for skyline and the hospital, and also the dam is a cherished “secret” spot for many Napa locals including myself ❤
You're welcome! If you walk up Lake Marie Road to where the small cave and horse-watering trough are (the one that sometimes has fish in it), the turn off for the cave-spring is just a short ways further up the road on the left. Be careful of ticks as you'll have to wade through tall grass.
Reminded of a grainery. Crematorium near mental hospital, cringe. Brave adventure! So beautiful back there until this inciniary, wonder that the Castle Lake was named after Queen Camille in a British take over. What a wonderful adventure thank you! Check for frozen giants, melted ancient civilizations, pyramids in the hills!
Ive lived in Napa almost 40 years and all this was all under the radar, I walked Skyline Park to Lake Marie, completely clueless. Thank you for the tour
Easy subscribe. This is very cool content. If I was going to share some very gentle feedback, your VOs are a little low compared to the music and I definitely would rather hear your narration. Super cool video though!
Thank you, I always appreciate feedback like this. The balance of the audio tracks is certainly tricky. Glad you enjoyed the vid!
So Cool!!! Thanks for sharing! This is incredible that you do this!!!
Thanks Susie!! With luck we'll get to do more trips like this in the future!
What an awesome adventure. I lived vicariously as you sped down such beautiful forests and scary trails. Thanks for sharing.
Watching this from a Shinkansen train! Great video
Please continue this content!
I really enjoyed this series. Makes me wish I still lived in Napa. Thanks for sharing!
Theres way more Redwood forests than people think it's just not old growth

Thank you for the video
How do I get information about patients at the Napa State Hospital?
You don't. Patient confidentiality.
Are you asking how to get information about patients, generally, or about a particular individual? Patients admitted in the late 1800's/early 1900's often had their names reported in the local newspapers. It's worth searching for their name in the California Digital Newspaper Collection (CDNC). Ancestry.com has scans of some of the patient logbooks, which contain names, countries of origin, age, and affliction. If you're looking for information about a relative who might have been a patient, it's worth reaching out to the hospital directly. Hope this helps!
Great upload indeed remote rural off grid here down under , I often take my 4WD and camper trailer and just explore , yes its addictive indeed.
Sounds like the little boy was abused by someone in his home and they made out he was doing it himself. Into the asylum you go, unwanted child.
Can you do a audit on the hospital itself thanks.
pls do a part 3 of Patient stories from the old Napa State Hospital
Lobotomy village.... 😢
Just thinking out loud did you guys Google map that place it might be a pyramid
Aztec step pyramid pre mud flood
Oh I see now it might be where the peak of the water flow is
There is no way people believe they built that castle that is more impressive than ones in England in 7 years..

So Peter was a hobbit?!
Yeah! And for "elevensies" he enjoyed a bit of roasted squirrel!
Really interesting video! Well done thanks for sharing 👍
Great work on the video, thank you 😊
I'm going to guess that you are a Taurus.
my grandmother worked there. ......there is a very strange camp on the side of manzanita peak that faces the canyon beyond the old damn , it struck me as old and carefully made but not part of the hospital, carefully stacked rocks and like a little open roofed home... I used to crawl every inch of those hills, it struck me as bizarre, ...also lost terraces that were near I think, all seemed different build than the hospital ruins and remains. been 20 years...wonder if its still findable... you got my brain working on this one ! thanks for the fun vid.
Sounds like a great follow up video idea! 😊
Thank you for the suggestion! Your grandmother must have had some interesting stories! I think I know the area you're referring to. It sounds like the area northeast of the dam where the Manzanita and Toyon trails are, if I'm not mistaken. By your recollection, is it near one of those trails, or do you think it would require hiking off-trail for a distance? Would it be closer towards the precipice of the canyon/Toyon trail, or away from the precipice/Manzanita trail?
The best part of Napa is the weather
I went inside the cavern, we smelled some-thing foul. Turned back. I can’t find anything on the cave, I’ve heard rumors of tunnels inside the area
Been exploring that place for over 40 years and you answered so many questions I had . Thanks
You know I was going to there this last week. I live in the Sacramento area and instead went to Rockville. This has me interested now.
M4 unit is fuked
This was very interesting. Thank you Katey !
I love mountain biking Skyline and these series have been so enjoyable! Thank You!
I've been enjoying your videos. I'm a Napa resident of 33 years and have been doing a large amount of research on my TH-cam channel.
I appreciate the interest, but your use of the pick in your video makes me cringe! We should think about restoring these artifacts rather than marring them.
@@katey314 the true history of the property is buried in debris. Remember they murdered our people there...
Seems a convenient place to put the people most resistant to the reset of the late 1800s . Funny how many people died in the early 1900s and that’s when they had orphan trains herding out orphans. Also same timing as Spanish flu, and a bunch of wars between Britain and other countries , then World War I . What better way to wipe out a resistant population than war and sickness. Then put the remainder in asylums and say they are insane . Did you see that one guys illness? He said he was a free thinker. Start researching the old buildings that were here, including that hospital, they were here long before we are told they were built. Look at the buildings from the late 1800s worlds fairs that were supposedly built in a year or two and then torn down after the fair. Very Roman and Phoenician like buildings. And the increase in patients right after the 1906 “ earthquake “ is suspicious too. On that note, go look at the San Francisco treasure island of 1915, that too was supposedly built for a fair and then torn down. All a bunch of lies, our history is not what they tell us it is.
Just went there and found your videos. I was hoping for more info on the abandoned two story building with all of the graffiti on it that looked like old living quarters.
Hi Jarrett, all I know about that building is that it was called the "F-Ward", short for farming ward. I think the patients placed there participated in gardening and other outdoor activities into the 1970's.
@@katey314 thanks!
Thinking the etching on the stone traced out as DIEL is actually "DIED" and the numbers below are a date? Might this be a clue to the stone formation and "window" in the wall. Possibly used as alter for candles or statue? Thanks for creating this history. Very helpful. I have ancestors who worked as attendants 1880s to 1930s.
God's Country! Save our forests so All can enjoy!
The satisfying crunch underfoot, cute rubber duckies, hair-raising descents/terrain, the discovery of scary features and donkey bombs, traversing Bob Gnarly, and topped by delicious cuisine made this a fantastic tire-trek across trepidatious trails! And boy, what a funny ending! Thanks for not keeping it in Vegas so we can enjoy the ride with you!
🤣🤣🤣
My auntie Karen was sent to napa state hospital for the criminally insane she had multiple personality disorder after suffering severe physical and sexual abuse from my grandparents....she was sent there because she was threating Gov grey davis at the time and pres bill Clinton after serving as Ted Kaczynski aka the unibombers pen pal....we went there to visit her often and it was an absolutely creepy place ...as a physic and now paranormal investigator I'd love to go back and do a show I can guarantee evidence!!!
Can you imagine being a soil scientist in that country digging pits?
Such a great history detective your are!!! I was on the edge of my seat. Thank you for these.
So beautifully done. Recently stumbled upon your documentaries after hiking in the park and wondering what all the unlabeled remnants were. Love all the history of this place. Can't wait for more!
In the 60’s many young people were sent to NSH for drug-related crimes. Much misdiagnosis’s occurred. The mental health system in the 60’s in California was archaic, punishing, unhealthy.
