Building and patching vsftpd on Debian
มุมมอง 68วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video we are going to build a custom vsftpd .deb package on Debian while also patching out the version number it reports. Website: jhx7.de Blog: jhx7.de/blog/ Disclaimer: This is not all there is to security! Security is a layered approach - just altering the version number a program reports is not fool proof. Keep this in mind please.

    Thanks for the guide! I managed to follow along, but I am using the arm64 version on Parallels on my Macbook Air M1. Works very well! Next challenge is to install a simple desktop environment on it.

      Glad you liked it! You are for sure in on some fun adventure with OpenBSD. A great desktop environment would be Xfce for example - light and still very usable. You might also want to check out the excellent OpenBSD FAQ: www.openbsd.org/faq/index.html Enjoy your time with OpenBSD!

    I've been meaning to give Debian a real shot. I mostly stick to Arch and Grml these days.

      Give it a try if you like - maybe in a vm Debian is pretty low maintenance. Once installed and configured there is very little hassle to keep it going. (Basically no hassle at all) Arch is what hooked me back in 2009. It pretty much started the Linux adventure for me personally.

      @@YetAnotherSysAdmin lol I'd have to say Windows started the Linux adventure for me. Mandatory system-destroying updates led me to Ubuntu. Ubuntu did everything I needed for about a decade. My job had me touch almost everything popular, but Ubuntu was home until I fell in love with Arch. That's part of what interests me in Debian.

      @@xionix4Came from the Windows world as well - still in it. Arch is what converted me pretty much. But, I have never stopped using Windows. My daily driver is Debian and my homelab is full of BSD/Linux systems doing various tasks. I got my prefered distros and derivatives as shown in the video. Trying out something new can be quite fun. Give Debian a spin and see if you like it as well - which I'm quite sure of since you also liked Ubuntu. Arch and Debian are similar in some points. I always recommend doing a full install with the desktop (DE) of your choice and just working on it to get a better feel for the distro.

      @@Trash7Trash7Trash7 Debian makes a great base for lots of different applications. The defaults are sometimes a little strange - but once setup, like you said, Debian shines! Also: The great upgrade procedure when doing dist-upgrades. I was sold on Debian when I first used it back in 2009.

      Great that you enjoyed the video! FreeBSD is all over the homelab here. It sure brings many good things to the table. Besides, a little BSD is always a good idea ;)

    Darnit, I can't read the last speech bubble! ("Here's a ____, kid, get yourself a better computer".) But yes, OpenBSD seems pretty cool, I should try and find a use-case for it.

      "Here's a nickle kid, get yourself a better computer" That is the full quote. The site will be pushed to GitHub soon - so anyone can modify it to there needs. OpenBSD is truly amazing. Loved it since I first encountered it in 2009!

    1:37 I knever thought about using /etc/rc.conf.local, will do that from now on

    • @YetAnotherSysAdmin
      @YetAnotherSysAdmin ปีที่แล้ว

      Side note: This can be quite useful when using Ansible for example - so there is no need to edit /etc/rc.conf (Since the main rc.conf holds defaults). This is what I do personally. Great that you can make use of it!
