    I recently tried to compose with a template where short and long notes were on separate tracks. I gave up. I really can't work like that. Because, in the same musical phrase, I will have Long and Short notes... Trying to separate them when composing is such a pain. I swear I tried, but I gave up ! I 'm definitly a keyswitch guy. Also, when listening to an orchestra in a Hall... well, the players do not move to a smaller room each time they have to play short notes. Even if I understand that it's easer to deal with for sound engineers, it's totally unnatural. Am I a lost case ?

      @RobertRodriguezMusic 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@cyrilcalmes4208 honestly, I can be the same way as well! I like having everything on one line. For this template, I thought I’d separate long and shorts, meanwhile I know others will separate every single articulation! All a matter a preference and knowing what you gain vs lose. I say go for what works for you until it stops working for you! 😊

      @@RobertRodriguezMusic Hi Robert, thank you for both your video and your comment. I decided to modify my template to have all articulations in one track plus an extra track for short note that can make things easyer to add an ostinato. But that's the only application I can find for separate tracks. NOw, just have (again) to spend time in VEP 7).

    It's amazing what you are doing, and I can relate! For me it's that I know how to play ukelele, I have composed and written songs and even recorded the demos with my ukulele but I don't feel like a composer at all because it's the only instrument I know and I don't even know how to read sheet music (I'm a "learn by ear" person). I'm currently in the process of learning piano as well and practice every day for 10min minimum, plus learning to read music but the feeling of imposter syndrome is real!

  • @neilingle794
    @neilingle794 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I think you echo a lot of similar sentiments. On a daily basis, I'm confronted with my own internal goblin, squeaking at me, 'who the hell do you think you are?' I can't really play the piano, but can compose. My piano limitations are frustrating - if I could play freely then I'd be able to improvise more and better enact the ideas floating around in my brain. However, sometimes I come across people who really are good pianists - but they cannot play without the sheet music. They've no idea what they are playing, because they don't understand the composition / have little theory beyond what they need for the manuscript. It's as if the piano is just a mechanical activity, no emotion or creativity involved. I find this quite sad, and in that sense I feel lucky. I'm aware of the power of Chromatic Mediants. I feel the space of open and sus chords. I know what the Dorian Vamp is, and what emotional effect it can have on me (and hopefully others) in my compositions. And that's one thing I can play too ;-)

Now, I compose for lots of things, and I wish I was better at piano. That would really make composer easier and faster. I totally agree on the imposter syndrome too. I am not a composer but I have followed the Thinkspace Bootcamp this summer. Originally a drummer, I can’t play the piano but have done so since I was young if there were any piano around. Isn’t just loving and learning to play enough? In general I love to have some years of noodling around before I can call myself knowledgeable in anything. I pick everything up that I walk across and like and I dive into it. I happen to like jazz a lot. There’s something to those 7 chords that I find is so rich in color. Also jazz offers a platform to improvise a lot and isn’t John Williams a jazz pianist himself!? Jazz obviously has made his composing richer, at least so they say. I think that for learning to play the piano you should be loving the sound of the exercises you play. I don’t want to play boring exercises. Right now I am following a Pianote jazz course. Piano with Jonny is very interesting but the pace of exercises goes a little too fast to my liking. But what’s nicer than noodling around at your piano? If that’s the case, you’ll progress no matter what. The drive you have Robert, to close some gap in your piano playing abilities will certainly bring you a long way. Just enjoy the ride. Btw: I had no idea of our similarities in this field😊

      Thank you so much! I totally agree-there’s so much to learn just from noodling and enjoying the sound of what we’re playing. Those exercises that keep us inspired really do make all the difference. There’s something special about simply enjoying the instrument! 😊

    Good for you Robert! For the beginning of your piano practise, I highly recommend getting a private teacher who will be able to suggest adjustments in your technique, so you use your fingers and wrists in the most efficient way and minimize the risk of any long-term injuries/pain. Even the right height of your chair might minimize back pains! Obviously you should play the pieces you like listening to, but solid technical basics like playing scales and passages will help you in playing more complicated improvisations and accompaniments ad hoc (might make composing in DAW easier). Carl Czerny’s etudes are classic practicing pieces I used to learn, although most of them are quite boring. 😅 Lastly, when I was starting out, Piano Around the World YT channel and Dotan Negrin’s journey of learning and practicing piano improvisation around the world was very inspiring to me and made me realize the beauty of true improvisation and accepting there are no real mistakes - just unexpected sounds that are part of the music. 😉 Good luck!

    Hi Robert and thank you for this. I was in your January 2024 ThinkSpace Orchestral Composition Bootcamp. I later found your TH-cam channel and videos which I enjoy very much I had a hell of a time creating the a workable Logic template and score for that course. Coming from a Macpro trash can with 64gb ram and switchedto my m2 MBP w/32 mb. Right before the course started. I already had lots of cinesamples orchestral instruments and several others but bought the BBC symphony to use as well. My first real orchestral template crashed and took forever to open. I had so many problems that most of my time was spent learning how to use samples and templates. My composing and orchestrations were made extremely frustrating. It was depressing I managed to put something together for the final project that wasn’t near the piece I had sketched and attempted. Since then I’ve watched and rewatched the bootcamp material as well as cinematic orchestration, sampled orchestration and mixing thinkspace courses. These have cleared up a lot of problems. I purchased MUSIO and have begun to work with the instruments. I had been used to the Kontakt shell etc. If you teach the Bootcamp course again make sure to share your MUSIO template if you can. I’ve watched it several times and it follows what I’ve learned on ThinkSpace. It certainly makes things easier for a beginner learning how to orchestrate. I did have a problem creating blank tracks and labeling instrument family grouping to make locating families. Around 14:40 you show how but you speed.it up and it’s not clear what kind of track you’re making When I make a new MIDI track and select reassign track my opinions are -MIDI Click. -GM Device. -Folder When I select ‘Folder”it gives me a folder icon an input button. It used to offer ‘no output’ but now that has changed to GM Device. I haven’t found a way to delete all of this and make it a blank track spacer or an instrument section TITLE I also hear you talking a lot about making aux tracks when you are creating each instrument. I am accustomed to creating an instrument track for each and aux comes in once I’m done with tracks. I am recreating your template piece by piece to get to know the process better. no you again for doing this.

However, there is no such folder for me in Audio Music Apps. I'm a bit technically challenged, perhaps you can help? The folders I have under Audio Music Apps are Channel Strip Settings, Custom Icons, Databases, Key Commands, Patches, Plug-In Settings, Project Templates, Sampler Instruments, Temp. Do I create the folder myself, or move it somewhere else?

    • @RobertRodriguezMusic
      @RobertRodriguezMusic 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Feirin332 Hey there! That’s actually very interesting to hear. I’ve always assumed that folder was there (I figure this stuff out as I go) but perhaps it only shows up once you create your Articulation Set in Logic. That said, I would try creating that folder with that exact name “Articulation Settings” and adding my folder there, so that Logic knows where to look. Alternatively, you could try creating and saving your own articulation set as a test and see if the folder gets created when you go to save!

      @scoreguy1111 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Thanks so much for your response! Absolutely loving the template :) What I’ve opted to do here is give every Channel 1 Region select a -60 ms delay, since that seems to be in the ballpark for Cinesamples shorts, then for the legatos, doing an additional 10 ms nudge to the left 9 times in the midi itself, since it seems their legatos are fairly uniform at -150 ms. This seems to be working well for me. Can’t wait to test drive this template further, thanks so much again!

    As a studio one user, I've gone the route of building track presets with disabled plugins = Basically mini templates (they can contain how many tracks & plugins you want). I can then drag'n drop and mix and match them how I want, and they'll have the instruments loaded up with basic buses. You can make them very complicated too if you want to, but I'm still figuring things out. That being said, I do have traditional templates for the symphony orchestras too. Combining these both approaches makes the approach pretty fast and flexible.

    Great video! One question: Why separate reverb buses for each instrument group? Each instrument already has it's own Sends, which can be adjusted as necessary. Why not send everything to a single pair of long/short reverbs?

    • @RobertRodriguezMusic
      @RobertRodriguezMusic 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good question! You definitely don't have to create separate reverb busses per group the way I did and you'll find it much easier to route the reverb to single full mix stem or a full thru track and call it a day! But I tend to separate because I like being able to control the sound of the reverb per group on a macro level (in addition to the individual sends.) This also allows me to capture the reverb of each instrument group in my STEMs!

      @@KevinrosenOfficial It’s not necessarily mixed or balanced but I set it up so that it has routing for reverb and stem printing! Plus any extra instruments can always be added in with the preset blank instrument tracks!

      @ No problem! I actually changed the reverb to the Logic stock Chromaverb but you can always change it to whatever works for you

      @@RobertRodriguezMusic Thats amazing, Thanks for taking time to answer my question🙏 I assume that if i wanna add lets say an english horn for the woodwinds i just add it or will it mess up?

      @RobertRodriguezMusic 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Shouldn’t be a problem! Each group has a blank track that’s already routed to its appropriate section! So you’d just duplicate that track and add in whatever instrument fits the group (ie. English Horn under Winds)

    Really great video! How much RAM does this template actually use?

      @@benedictstock6539 Thank you! I turned off all the instrument tracks so really it doesn’t take up much RAM at all. But when I turned on EVERY instrument, it looks like roughly 6-8GB. I would only turn on the tracks you’re using and leave the rest turned off!

    A while back I was messing around with RPG Maker MV and I wanted a custom title theme rather than the stock themes that came with the program, so I whipped up this little gem in orchestrator. I just wanted something fast and simple that I eventually might sit down and do a full composition of later if I decided to go with it as the inspiration. It took longer to decide on the presets than it did to figure out the actual piece on-the-fly. th-cam.com/video/TefGe5X4inI/w-d-xo.html I was really amazed at how epic it turned out from just 2 orchestrator tracks, one was for the score and the other was for the ensemble.

    I purchased Scarbo 2 weeks ago and found it to be lacking. The sounds were great but nothing my other plugins didn't have already and they really only seemed to fit into cinematic scores, not really anything for beats. I got really hyped on the reviews but now I see it was all marketing. It's just videos like this one demoing the sounds by themselves saying they're objectively good without really providing context or any in-depth discussion. Even with the 15% discount it ended up being $80. Very redundant plugin fueled by marketing along with NO REFUNDS. It's hard these days to find any legit interesting and usable plugins
