Keep the TW. But definitely buy a bigger bike too, 400 to 650. I have a F650GX Dakar as well for logging road touring. But when you get back on the TW it will feel like a mountain bike, and the controls will feel kind of toyish. Which is actually fun. I'm right across the way from you. Powell River (and Texada) are all great places to explore on a TW. As far as range goes, I too like the stock tank, but I do carry (occasionally) a 2 gallon RotopaX.

DRZ 400 is always the right answer. I wouldn't get rid of a tw, either, however.

The TW is a wonderful bike. Yes it is a dog on the highway but otherwise: fantastic. I don't feel the fuel problem. I carry a one liter fuel bottle which works just fine for my needs.

Try a Bradley Performance 230cc engine kit. You can put other Yamaha Tanks on it if you want the metal tank and the look. Search " 𝚇𝚃𝟹𝟻𝟶 𝚝𝚊𝚗𝚔 𝚒𝚗𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝚘𝚗 𝚃𝚆𝟸𝟶𝟶" on youtube. Look at the cost of doing valves on these new bikes, hint . It is not in the low hundreds. Everything you mentioned is off the shelf solvable.

I found you the black friday deal try and find a better new updated modern bike . I personal am impressed by the quality of this bike , it way better then my XR150L And was $500. Can. Cheaper . TW's are great bikes. I never did a valve adjust and I had mine over 10 years. Stock tanks always look better then plastic tanks, but when fuel range matters, change the tank. The TW is a keeper, just buy another bike and keep the TW.

I just down sized from a vstrom 1050 to a 2024 Honda nx500. And don't regret it at all the vstrom was to much bike for me. The nx is fast enough and fun enough I don't believe that whole you will out grow the bike bullshit. Most people can't ride a bike to it's full potential. There is something to be said for riding a big bike 40 % or a smaller bike at 100%.

Unless you can get a serow 225 in good shape... keep the tw. (ridden both) yamaha and the other members of the japanese big 4 aint making bikes that have souls anymore.

Valve adjustment is one reason i love this bike. A chimp could do it. Takes 5 minutes. Most other bikes are shim and bucket so you have to take the valve cover apart, takes forever and you have to buy shim kits. The service interval is to check that clearance so they probably don't even need adjusted. You're being charged for them to take the cover off and and stick a feeler gauge in. The tw is a keeper. Get another bike but keep the TW. My insurance is cheaper with two bikes than just one so thats a plus also.

You’re a bit misinformed on the ethanol issue. If you buy premium 91 octane or higher, it has almost zero ethanol , and if you add a good fuel stabilizer like seafoam , your carb will be fine in storage . It’s also very easy to drain your carb. Shut your fuel off, and tuned the drains crew, or just run the engine until it runs of fuel in the carb. How do you think people storage their lawn mowers and snow blower in the off season ? Ive owned dozens of carved bikes and power equipment and never had a carb plugin on me from ethanol .

Buy an ST1300. keep the TW.

Giant Loop makes nice fuel bladders that roll op out of the way. They come in a lot of different sizes.

wow...no doubt about service intervals, I never knew that holy crapper...that seems very short and I suck at doing mechanical. Be aware, you can ride this bike to it's limits and likely be comfortable, two of the bikes you want will outride you coming off this thing, and the Kawi, well....no comment. I broke my leg twice on my KTM 690 riding it like my Yamaha 250....yes it was cause i was a crappy rider, but there is something to be said about riding a bike you are better than. I think you would love the Honda CRF 300 Rally! You're welcome.

I'm tempted by the TW200, love the look. However, it seems like Honda CRF300L is really what I'm looking for. I'm just torn on to do the rally or not. I like the look of the non-rally more, but I do want a bigger fuel tank.

Looked at the TW but tire availability was my main issue. I get up to 82 mpg on my XT250 and can find tires anywhere.

Ride within its constraints and you'll be fine. Remember, you can buy a small nation for the price of a GS1300! And you're getting better economy and easier maintenance over the lifetime of you and the bike. The ethanol gas issue has never been a problem for me as long as the bike is started every few months.

How about Suzuki DR 650

If you sold it, you would regret it. All the others are too heavy and honestly, not as much fun unless you primarily want to ride the road. The closest combo I’ve seen is the DRZ400, but it’s still not as easily moveable in the tough stuff as it’s 318 lbs dry and it’s got a 37 inch seat height. That’s ok if you’re 6’4”, but if not, it’s not gonna be fun in the tough stuff. The TW will literally go anywhere two wheels can possibly take you, though it is underpowered for the road.

I know you’re concerned about the ethanol fuel here in Canada , but did you ever consider a DR 650? I’ve had mine for around 4 years now without any carb issues . Being that I live in Alberta , it’s sitting at least 6-7 months at a time. I use Seafoam additive in the tank , run it through for a few km before putting the bike away then drain the carb bowl . No issues so far . That being said, there’s always going to be carb maintenance at some point in time , but at least easy and cheap to do. Another few pros to the DR is that it’s a little lighter than the three bikes you’re looking at . It also checks so many boxes for capability . And the aftermarket is huge!. Figured I’d throw my 2 cents in to hopefully help you out with another potential option. I also looked at the tenere 700 in the past multiple times but kept going back to my DR .

$200 for a valve adjust?😯🤣😯🤣 It take me like 15 minutes!😁 I have a 690 and a Tdub with a 4.1 gal tank. Both are very long range. I don't care about looks really, more about function and I gotta say I get way more thumbs up with my turd wagon than the 690. Good luck!

I would get about 120 km before I had to switch to RES. You'll find that you get much better mileage, if you switch to the 14/47 sprockets. The loss of bottom-end torque is negligible and you don't have to rev it up like a Cuisinart to get speed. If I'm going to be putting on a lot of miles in one specific area, I'll bring a 1 gallon gerry-can and stash it somewhere...on my way back, I can fill up and go!

I hear simple green works pretty dang good! Used to use it to clean my bmx rims for better braking power as well.

The TW200 doesn't need 91 octane premium, and would run better and get better fuel economy on 87 octane regular. For the best mileage and performance, use ethanol-free gasoline, found where people fuel their boats (gas stations near lakes, etc.). High octane is meant for high compression performance motors, and you don't have that in any dual sport.

Stalling after starting usually means your idle mixture is out of adjustment.

I agree 100%. I fell victim to the "Death Wing" hystericals and went out and bought a Shinko 241. BIG mistake! The Trail Wing is actually a surprisingly good handling tire on pavement. I rode the twistiest road in America, The Devils Highway with the Trail Wings and was very impressed. But the 241 is terrible. The 241 is not neutral, the knobs are way too soft and let the tire squirm around. It doesn't want to lean. It does not want to stay leaned over in a corner. But worse yet, mine was molded out of round! There was no way to balance it or get a smooth ride. The front end bounced up and down like a jackhammer.. My dealer finally agreed it was a defective tire and gave me a refund. I will say that the 4.00-18 Shinko 241 did have good traction in the dirt, but it was far and away the worst tire I have ever tried on the street, ever! And I ride on the street more than dirt.
