Unbelievable that to this date there are plenty of stalinists falsifying history and blaming the victims of the purges for their own deaths.

I came here after watching an episode of Tasting History by Max Miller. He was discussing the rations and foods of the USSR during the second world war and briefly mentioned Vavilov's seed bank.. Thank you for this brief history of Nikolai's life, I am very tempted to by Pringle's book to learn more. Unfortunately, our modern life is in a precarious place between science and pseudo science, many folks have forgotten what achievements have been made and how we all have benefited greatly from the hard work of scientists like Vavilov. There are people just like Lysenko who are grifting off the backs of those hard working men and women to gain power and influence politics, it wouldn't be hard to imagine for example JFK Junior causing starvation, suffering and hardship to many people just like that of Lysenko doing.

Paul's life got off to a terrible start. After he was born, Tsarina Elizabeth stole Paul from his mother Catherine's arms and took control of his rearing. Catherine seldom saw him so the crucial bond between mother and child when he was young tragically never happened. This was the beginning of the lifelong rift between Catherine and Paul.
