I met a few of these little fellas during a summer where I was helping rehabilitate baby birds. In a perfect world, they would spend all of their time either eating or screaming. Also easily one of the types of baby bird we had that was most eager to bite you.
They seem pretty bitey!
So my kids found one right before dark as a thunderstorm began today and I was hoping to put him back at sun up but he hasn't made noise nor bitten anyone, very docile. Didn't see any parents around where they found it. Is it unusual for 1 exactly this age to be docile?
Some of them could definitely be more docile. As long as it isn't injured or weak, it should be fine to turn loose in the morning. Otherwise, you should check if there's a wildlife rehabilitator near you that takes birds. Usually, what we'd do for a bird we found like that at our house is fix them a small box with some paper towels so they can have a dark, quiet, space to settle down. It may be tempting to feed them, but a night hungry is safer than accidentally giving them something that's harmful. Hope your grackle does well!
@@hoodieninja_7203 I worked as a rehabber's assistant for years and years back in Florida raising countless baby birds but I just never had a grackle come in so I don't know their personalities. From what I see you feed them similar to a robin except they are more omnivorous right? My plan is to take him back in the morning safely in a tree and checking on him after a while to make sure his mom found him. He keeps closing one of his eyes so I hope that isn't a sign of something, he also hasn't wanted anything to eat but he pooped several times.
@@angelmartin7310 Could very well be that he's just tired and not feeling up for a meal right now. But yes, I did know ours to be quite big on crickets and mealworms. I suspect the screamy/bitey combo had to do with them seeing us as both a food source, and a threat to their access to that food source. Worms are delicious, and we yell for more worms, but the gloved hands in our cage are big and move strangely, so we try to make them go away by nipping. I don't think they're mean birds necessarily, just very busy and demanding when they're not too sleepy or shaken up.
