Hello and welcome to my brain! I build instruments, write songs and make brightly-coloured music videos! I also host a weekly show about my vinyl collection, "Vinyl Friday"! Enjoy.
Buffalo Springfield And The Musical Alchemy of Laurel Canyon: An Album Breakdown - Vinyl Friday #109
I always love covering anything relating to Laurel Canyon, because the entire musical community is so densely woven that learning about one of my favourite musicians means learning about many of my favourite musicians.
And so, while this is ostensibly an episode about Buffalo Springfield Again, it's also about everyone in the galaxy of Laurel Canyon who played a part, directly or tangentially. Which means I had a hell of a good time making it. It is my hope that you have a hell of a good time watching!
Happy Friday, folks.
For those of you with a burning desire to generally support what I do, I'm here to help you along in that journey: www.buymeacoffee.com/fathommusicnz (but no pressure, friends☺️)

The Great Beatles Harmony Countdown: My Top 10 Picks!
มุมมอง 10K2 วันที่ผ่านมา
When I think about bands known for their harmonies, the first to come to mind are acts like Crosby Stills and Nash, The Eagles, or The Beach Boys. The Beatles are very highly regarded for their songwriting (hot take, I know), but is it possible that those accolades sometimes detract from their immense skill in harmony arrangement and performance? Over the holidays, I had the opportunity to reco...
My Ideal System For Discovering Amazing Music + Best Album Picks Of 2024!
มุมมอง 1.3K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Given the incredible abundance of music and its immediate accessibility in this day and age, it should be easy to discover new music, right? Not so much - in fact, I think it may be entirely the other way around. Either way, about a year ago, I began to feel like I was discovering a LOT of new music, but never really getting to know any of it. I devised a system to sort this out, and it was so ...
The Little Band That Couldn't: Breaking Down Jellyfish's Overlooked Masterpiece
มุมมอง 3.4K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Today's album is one that is partly responsible for the existence of this little TH-cam channel, and yet, since I began Vinyl Friday two years ago, I thought I'd never have the opportunity to cover it on the show. Fortunately, the fates changed their minds on this front over Christmas, so it is my great pleasure to present one of my all-time favourites this Friday. In this episode: interpersona...
An Illustrated Ranking of the Ten Worst Beatles Characters

Welcome viewers! This episode's sister came out last week, in which we counted down the top 10 BEST Beatles characters. This week, we're going the other way. It's a race to the bottom, friends! The working title for these episodes was "How The Beatles Taught Me To Draw", because the idea to rank Beatles characters occurred in tandem with the idea to take up sketching, or at least disciplined do...
Ranking The Ten Best Beatles Characters: My Artistic Tribute

Welcome viewers! Earlier this year, I thought: "You know what the world needs? A definitive ranking of all the Beatles characters." Or maybe that's just what I needed, I dunno. The working title for these episodes was "How The Beatles Taught Me To Draw", because the idea to rank Beatles characters occurred in tandem with the idea to take up sketching, or at least disciplined doodling. Holiday Tunes For Every Season: Ten Songs I'd Play Year-Round
มุมมอง 1.9Kหลายเดือนก่อน
It's almost Christmas! That means a lot of different things for a lot of different people, clearly. Some have warm memories, some more tepid, and to others still, Christmas is entirely irrelevant. I think that most of us can probably agree, though, that we're sick of hearing the same 12 songs played in stores, by the time the day actually rolls around. So here I submit to you 10 songs that I co...

Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba Changed My Mind About Wicked - A Sceptic's Reaction

My usual domain isn't necessarily musical theatre (I usually sit within the classic albums camp of music nerdery), but after seeing the film adaptation of Wicked last weekend...something has *changed* within me. I figured I'd weigh in. Also! I'd like to apologise in advance for my temperamental camera. Apparently it can't recognise that my face is a face. For those of you with a burning desire ...

Thank you for explaining to me why I have always wanted to like Buffalo Springfield but never loved their LPs so never loved them.
ahh rock and roll woman---the linernotes say "inspired by david crosby" --crosby wanted to be in the buffalos and actually sat in at monterey festival--the riff is a variation on david's tune Reaissance Fair from Byrds younger than yesterday album--is that crosby on the 12 string for the intro---could be
thanks so much for this. Beg to differ on a few points: the sequencing of the tracks did seem weird, but in time became perfect and a kind of paradigm for so many great records of the era that followed---case in point Beggars Banquet, a year later--sliding from latin sympathy to appalachian no expectations to jokey country to howlin wolf rabelaisian blues to faux dylan....you get the point....in other words the band, intentionally or not, was setting s bar for eclectic......which became over time not weird but standard, all i wanted to say except thanks again....fyi that is dewey martin singing mr soul on the broken arrow intro.....oh they had a 4 record deal, whatever became of the 4th record?
She made elphabe interesting! She better win an Oscar
I'm a huge fan of Neil Young (Stephen Stills is great, too)! I love the music of Buffalo Springfield....all of it! Great choice!
Love your style, reminds me a lot of the qualities I find in this record...colourful, adventurous and versatile. Hugely enjoyable!!!
Love this series! Currently my favorite or at least top played Beatles song, these last few years. It is simply magic. Rubber Soul's out of this world vocals, shimmery twing-twang guitar, and one of Paul's grooviest, bounciest basslines make for a top notch harmonic swirl. When I play Rubber Soul, it ends with this track.
Good listening gals. You got 'Because' and 'If I fell' I think. Lots of choice with them.
🍿🍿🍿 delicious!
Unbelievably talented. One of those rare geniuses who know how to make stuff work.
Neat note -- one of the best songs on the eagles debut album was written by Gene Clark, formerly from the Byrds. Everything's connected!
You do need to do a video on 'in my dreams' -- it really is the best song on that album, and such a cool story about CSN. 'who's going to be the boss of this bunch, who will steer?'
Super, just super!!! Talent abounding! A “surprised by joy” experience in more ways than one… what a treat to reunite with the three of you! Found my soul.🥺
Congrats on 10K. well deserved.
I'm pretty sure (don't hold me to it) that I saw an interview with the producer who said he actually cut the drum part himself, because they couldn't find anything that worked with the pieces of the song and he sat down live with the various parts Frankenstein'd together and just played a very basic drum part that held everything together and did nothing else. He said it was crucial to making the various pieces work together and later, when he tried to get the drummers to do the same thing properly, they couldn't because it was too simple. Maybe I'm extrapolating a bit but I'm pretty sure I got the gist.
The call-and-response vocal stack in the middle of the song is Stills-Nash. For what it's worth...
I am curious to watch this because I didn't get into Buffalo Springfield's second album. All my live I knew "For What it's Worth", but my dad never played the rest of the album in my memory. As an older teen in temporary possession of my dad's entire collection of LPs I decided to give it a listen and wow, "all killer, no filler" as they say. So I few... several years later I downloaded Again, and nothing grabbed me. But it's always worth it to comeback to something. It took many listens to London Town by Wings for me to appreciate it. And let's see if your enthusiasm rubs off. :D
The clips all seem promising.
I always loved crazy band formation stories. I have no crazy story, but I named my band after something we saw nearby when the original band formed. In our case it was a more ubiquitous Exit sign, and not an amazing looking piece of machinery with a unique name. Your video is taking me some places on memory lane. :)
Oh, it's the White Album. I should love it. :D
I'm not sure how "healthy" that community was. What with all the fighting, walking out, and giant egos. It was definitely a community of dysfunctional and extremely talented youths. And some drugs. :P
btw, I love the theme!
Fun fact: Steve is from my hometown of Hanford, CA. That radio station is still there, off the 198 Freeway in central California from Handord, ca towards Visalia, Ca.
I've seen footage of another LA band, The Beach Boys, covering Rock & Roll Woman around this time too. It was during the Mike Love kaftan era. I'm guessing they were attracted to the harmonies that you spoke about.
I think Crosby said he borrowed R&RW's guitar riff from the Byrds' "Bells of Rhymney"
I always thought "For What It's Worth" one of the band's least interesting music-two chords plus a simple chorus. Loved the band, though-I was 17 when the first album came out
Always love to hear stories of these early groups, well done. Congratulations on 10K subs.
Buffalo Springfield = Rubber Soul Buffalo Springfield Again = White Album Last Time Around = Let It Be
I don't care who was the better lyricist between McCartney & Lennon, they were both awesome song writers , both together and as individuals, all I know is Paul's ability to tell a story & paint a picture with this song , is absolutely outstanding! full respect !, and yes I know John collaborated on it, but it was Paul's song in the beginning so......
This rendition by Nancy could have been just as big a hit with the Beatles vocals laid over it, as the original, maybe even bigger !. I would love it of Nancy would approach Paul & Ringo & ask the question & re release this version, it could be a repeat hit today in 2025!
P.S. All The Lonely People!, a metaphor for the troubled times we live in today! .
I love your t shirt "XTC English Settlement" !
I'm celebrating you too! Congrats Fathom
Great video.
Another very interesting one 😊
I love this song. I love the way the harmonies and chord changes keep 'opening up' the song. And the guitar solo & its reprise leave you begging for more. I always thought the discord you pointed out was more of a f* -up than a choice (they weren't The Beatles after all..😅), but who knows? The song is quite amateurish in some ways (even at the time there was a sense that it wasn't totally worked out) but the overall effect couldn't be argued with. This song, along with the rest of the 'Retrospective' (best-of) album (Mr Soul, Kind Woman, On The Way Home, Broken Arrow), was on high rotation an 8-track tape player on a 36-hour marathon drive down the east coast of North America from Nova Scotia to Florida over Christmas 1969. As such they're all permanently imprinted in my audio storage neurons, and they play spontaneously in my head sometimes.
One other cool connection - it is said, by graham Nash - that mama cass sings on CSN's 'preload downs' (on the chorus, likely).
'pre-road downs'.
What you are talking about - I think - is what Brian Eno calls 'scenius' - the genius of a scene of people, rather than genius of solitary individuals -- laurel canyon in mid to late 1960's definitely was a scenius.
Not sure, but I think Jack Nitzsche & Sonny Bono co-wrote the 'jingle-jangle' classic, 'Needles & pins.' (Everything's connected!)
Seems like Last Time Round is sort of the same kind of beautiful mess as 'Again' love all three with a deep affection, but also recognize Again as the high water mark for that combination of musicians. Also think Furay was a solid rhythm guitarist and as such was the tissue that held the muscle and bone of the band together musically, he plays strong on the Monterrey Pop clips but he tends to get looked over by most critiques of the band but sometimes to the ego goes the spoils. He did alright with Poco. You captured the essence of the group and boiler-housed it into a concise message of love for the album, artists and your own joy of the beauty in it. Always liked the L.A. band of the sixties, not so much the S.F. bands generally with a few exceptions.Love, Doors, Rising Sons, Byrds, Turtles, the Mothers...Beach Boy...so on. Keep on Rocking.
The "Canterbury Scene" seems like it was a fun community in its time
