Welcome to my channel; I love history, research and everything else that presents itself to me.
This channel doesn't concentrate on one subject, as my interests are wide and varied.
I add video blogs about my Druidry practice, walks in the county, and days out in Derbyshire and beyond. History research and documentary films I have made and produced with a team.
I'm not a qualified historian or researcher, but many historians, teachers, and students have cited my work in academic papers. I have written on such subjects as "Alienor of Aquitaine" and "The Head of Medusa In Paintings and Symbols".
I have a good reputation within the academic community and can cite my work if anyone asks. I try to make my videos enjoyable; I don't claim to be on the same par as Lucy Worsley or Herodotus. I'm not as clear spoken as Liam Neeson or Morgan Freeman, but Ive never had Elocution lessons.

The myth surrounding Mike Tyson being an extra in Bugsy Malone? So You Wanna Be A Boxer
The myth surrounding Mike Tyson being an extra in Bugsy Malone? So You Wanna Be A Boxer
Watching all the media build-up surrounding Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight on Friday and then revisiting the innocent charm of Bugsy Malone.
Is there just an uncanny resemblance to the boxer in Bugsy Malone and Mike Tyson?
I know what you are thinking.
Remember, Bugsy Malone was released in 1976, a whole decade before Mike Tyson was born in 1966, making him just 10 years old at the time.
The boxer in Bugsy Malone certainly looks like a teenager.
What do you think?
This is a common myth, but no evidence supports his involvement in the film. Tyson's fame came later as a professional boxer in the 1980s.
Tyson was about ten years old when the movie was released and has no known connection to the production.
So, No, Mike Tyson was not an extra in Bugsy Malone.
The film, directed by Alan Parker, featured a cast of child actors, including Jodie Foster and Scott Baio, in the satirical gangster story.
It's a mystery we're yet to solve-who was this teenage boxer, and did he ever turn professional?

Traditional rhymes, songs, and sayings provide unmatched links with the past. They recall incidents and social conditions in history that may otherwise have been forgotten. In fact, they may be described as the poetry of the ages. Many of the true meanings of the old verses are lost to us, and they have secrets locked between their lines which can never be told. We repeat them, savouring the li...

Samhain, or 'summer's end', is the cross-quarter day between Fall Equinox and Winter Solstice. Like the other cross-quarter days, the date of the festival has shifted, and Samhain is now celebrated on Halloween, October 31. Celtic legend says that all crops would be harvested by this day since anything left in the fields belonged to the Cailleach. She is the hag embodied in the final sheaf of o...

The Water Tower, on Woodlands Road, Allestree, Derbyshire, is made of reinforced concrete. It has a central octagonal access tower with eight surrounding braced legs supporting a cylindrical tank above. It was built in about 1930 and removed from service in the early 1980s. This gravity-fed water tower was built over an old reservoir and fed water directly to Allestree Hall and gardens. The tow...

Allestree Park, a cherished part of the local community, was once a medieval deer park, a creation of William Emes in the 1770s. William, the mastermind behind Marketon Park, undoubtedly established the original medieval park, as documented in the Darley Cartulary, and it was stocked with fifty deer in 1370. The parkland surrounding Allestree Hall was meticulously laid out in the first decade o...

This site was originally part of the larger Cawdor Quarry complex. Permanite Asphalt was incorporated in 1989, and various asphalt products, mainly flooring blocks used to waterproof floors and roofing sheets, were manufactured. The process involved mixing aggregate, bitumen, sand, and limestone. The plant trucked in powdered limestone from several local quarries and mixed it with hot bitumen e...

The old Jewish cemetery in Chodecz, Poland, is still a meeting place of the heavens and the earth. Yet their heavenly attribute tells only half the story. Here in this documentary is another very earthly story and, indeed, a short story worth telling. This story tells of how Chodecz was chosen as a safe haven for many Jews back in the 1500s. A few Jewish settlers built their simple homes, sold ...

Traders have been travelling around the British Isles ever since the Stone Age. By referring to these and carefully observing the countryside, one can trace some old routes and enjoy magnificent walks. Archaeologists have found...

There is much written about Druidism and Shamanism in modern-day books, and I see many similarities between the two groups. We know the Druids didn't write anything down, but the Romans and the Greeks did, so I want to pick up the history lesson from the Greek historian Hecataeus of Abdera, who wrote in the fourth century B.C.Hecataeus wrote much about the Hyperborean scene and "an island that ...

Stone-quarrying is an industry to which medieval records refer more frequently than enlighteningly. The Strutt family has been quarried stone in Belper, Derbyshire, since the 1700s. The Strutts built their original mills from sandstone, as well as houses, churches, schools, bridges, and hospitals. Many of these buildings are still standing today. In my research, I found that the Strutts owned 2...

Thank you. Sante Sangre is an excellent film. Very innovative
The terraces were actually gradually worn down over thousands of years by neolithic man as they celebrated the equinox by tracing anti-clockwise DOWN the tor at autumn equinox and walking clockwise UP the tor at spring equinox to celebrate the strengthening and waning seasons. It was never populated as it was a sacred site. Its quite likely the only people allowed on the tor were priests, the rest of the population who would travel from long distances to the site to watch the priests from the base. It was definitely a religious site because the catholic church built a christian monument on it as they had a habit of doing. Nearly every old church in the UK is built on old pagan religious sites. The neothlics came to Glastonbury for the equinoxes and Stonehenge for the solstices. The current annual Glastonbury festivals are actually held at the wrong time and should move to mid September to be in tune with the historical energy of this sacred place. But, weather is probably a factor here.
Actually, a lot of sense in your comment, and I'm not a betting man, you are probably spot-on

Man is only as good as his intentions are...😮. But here in Africa their versions of Witchcraft is to enforce as much pain and suffering, thru phyto-drug inducements and poisons...As experience has taught me, much of their harm is caused by people who have an all out resentment, hatred for one. No matter how kind U've been to them, they are and can become extremely vindictive at the drop of a hat...by comparison a knive in a kitchen is as useful as it dangerous weapon, it works both ways...😢😮😢...
Religion is all about wealth, prestige, money and power. While telling the poor that being poor they will inherit the Kingdom of the Earth... Whata sodden lotta hogwash, so as to compensation for their belief efforts...as any Religious belief system in any form is just a business...a business as usual. So as the appease them spirits😊😅😂.
A mate and i did mushrooms up on the tor. Listened to the night, dogs barking miles away.
Must have been quite the trip
If you want to see something magical at the Tor. I recommend during the winter solstice
Will be celebrating winter solstice in my woodland. Not into huge gatherings nowadays
@Lost_Histories if the world understood just exactly what that place is. Nobody would want to be anywhere else. There's more to the red & white springs than they'll ever let you know.

I think water tower architecture is underappreciated. It's very 30s isn't it. I think you may have been channelling Jonathan Meades a bit there.
Thanks for your comment. I hope to do more short documentaries on other water towers in Derbyshire, where there are plenty. Jonathan Meades is a talented and inspiring writer.
I liked that. Ifind the way nature takes back these industrial places really interesting. And it's not where you might expect to find an homage to Van Gogh :)
Thanks, Yes I agree, I saw so much wildlife, insects and plants at the sight. It's a wonder bats haven't started to hang around there.

I live in Glastonbury and I can see the top of the Tor from an upstairs window.
What a fabulous town you live in. I travel from Derbyshire to enjoy your view
Wow a great film
So many legends and myths surround Glastonbury and the Tor. Some, quite fanciful, some , like a medieval or gothic romance, colourful and heroic. Some conjure up fairies, witches, wizards and magic. Connections to " King" Arthur and Guinevere. Some promote mysterious lay lines, hidden meanings, " networks of power" and other pagan beliefs. There is no doubt that there is something quite other worldly about the area. Especially the Tor itself. But these notions that are prevalent nowadays probably existed in ancient peoples who lived in the area too. The geography alone makes the imagination run wild with possibilities. The Ancients had imaginations too. These imaginations were probably triggered by natural phenomenon, the weather, pagan beliefs systems etc and over millennia developed into the myths and legends we associate with Glastonbury now. The writer Mallory very likely built his Arthurian romance on such legends and this, in turn, all adds to the general myths about the area. Whether you believe the myths and legends or not is really an irrelevance because what Glastonbury is nowadays is a fantastic addition to Britains culture, history, literature and " being". It's truly a remarkable asset to the islands that make up Great Britain and a contribution ( in all it's aspects, real or otherwise) to the cultures of the world. In that respect Glastonbury is truly "Magical".
The wet lands as graze lands, the uplands, terraced, for food crops
My brother and I slept in the tower on top of Glastonbury Tor in 1995.... We went down on the spare only to see Oasis, however we ended up being directed to the wrong stage by a young man (who I still hold resentment for) and we saw the Boo Radleys and Jamiroquai instead 😠... Other than missing Oasis, my camera being stolen and getting sacked from my job for being late on the Monday, we had a pretty great weekend 😋
Are you kidding, boo radley’s so superior to oasis. Nevermind, it’s all good. Best wishes…
I love these old docs. They are so genuine.
And now pilgrims go to the music festival instead, same basic thought as 800 years ago 🙂
The monks were great storytellers and liked wealth. The legends were fabrication, which is a shame !
Goodness, a story by Roald Dahl and narrated by Vincent Price? What a priceless treasure!
Didn’t the Church come out with the idea to build churches where the Pagans worship and that after time they would forget the original reason they came there?
Might both streams be responding to experience of place and time?
..even the greeks tried to grow grapes there in pre history
A barrow? Another Stone Henge under tons of earth?
Joseph of Arimathea (Aram of Athena?) was an extremely wealthy heir to a glass industry fortune and an early Christian disciple. He fled Palestine before the destruction of Jerusalem and founded Glastonbury, later known as Camelot.
Prof Manning's other series, 'Earth Story', is well worth a view as well.
That is a good one.
Has anyone ever used Lidar ? Or conducted a carefully controlled excavation? Could this be a barrow? A burial site?
Love it! I've long suspected as much.
How has he managed to make an entire documentary about the island of the Tor and avoided the fact that it’s one of many islands in that area? It’s not unique in its area. It has a building on top of course but there’s several others and it’s also nestled right at the foot of the mendips, not standing alone on a plain as suggested.
Lol
Graeme Hancock says, "This was built by aliens with the help of unicorns 3.2 billion years ago"....little known fact, it came in under budget by 32%.
They were excellent with their budgeting skills back then.
Prof Manning was as lovely a guy as he comes over in the BBC programmes. 1930 to 2018.
As the Catholics built their church on the summit it is certain it was a place of spiritual significance long before.
Am I the only one who gets frustrated at the theories archeologists give? The ritual stuff they describe and the meanings of sites almost always sound completely made-up
I'd say the Tor looks more like a minge than a left tit.
A fat minge.

Anything is possible. They totally make shit up with the rituals and meanings of things. A left breast?
