    It really doesn't matter that much where you aim, you just have to hit a higher quality shot with more spin and less height. A good slice anywhere on the court is gonna be 10x better than a mediocre one in a "strategic" spot. What happens of the opponent has a good backhand passing shot too? Do you just concede the match? Direction really is the least important factor in this scenario.

    • @CoachAdrian
      @CoachAdrian วันที่ผ่านมา

      This is just bad advice. It doesn't matter where you aim? A good slice anywhere is 10x better than any strategic spot? Direction and placement will always matter until players find a way to perform 175mph groundstrokes at will.

    • @thedom3403
      @thedom3403 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @CoachAdrian It's because unpredictable plus low height plus high RPMs means there isn't any bad spot. If you go line you have a good volley position. If you go cross you have a nice angle. If you go middle you have a jam. If you go deep you can get near their feet and buy yourself more reaction time. If you go short they have to reach and hit up, often with slice themselves. Heck even if you land short right on the center T you still can say you take away all their angles, deny them room to lob, and make them reach for the ball. There literally isn't a bad outcome on the entire court IF the shot has enough quality.

    • @CoachAdrian
      @CoachAdrian วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@thedom3403 This is a very simplistic thinking. If we always think what matters is the quality of our shot, you're in for a rude awakening when you eventually encounter opponents who are unfazed by your best quality shots. As I said, direction and placement matters. Quality matters too, but to say a good slice anywhere in the court is good enough is taking things way to simplistically. I talk about this a bit in my "game within the game" video: th-cam.com/video/_IYgaEMdsY8/w-d-xo.html

    Although she sliced it deep, he took it from a dominant groundstroke position. It didn't sit low, and he didn't have to reach for it. There should have been more slice, less ballspeed, and less arc. Even a drop shot would have helped down the line. But yes, cross court is even better.

      Yes, a short low slice DTL is difficult for the opponent. Needs to hit up to you at net.

    • @CoachAdrian
      @CoachAdrian 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Maybe. It still would be setting up a makeable running forehand for your opponent. If you're going down-the-line, you might as well do a drop shot and approach behind it.

  • @italophile2011
    @italophile2011 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The older smaller, heavier flexy racquets were better at slicing. The bounce died for the opponent. I can still do this with my old school technique on return of serve, but I have to plan for it. The best way to hit a low quick bouncing slice is to take the ball before it drops. Take the ball when it is above the height of the net. This was not possible for Amy. Agreed she should have flicked an angled cross-court.

    • @germanslice
      @germanslice 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I just use my push drive to deal with the difficult low balls in the court. using the Continental or Eastern Backhand Grip using the low to high swing with the flare finish. if I want to hit just topspin then I just use the normal swing drive but for difficult low balls I like using the push drive to unwind the edge of the racquet into the ball to drive it with pronation instead of just brushing under it with the middle of the strings and just floating it back for sometimes doing that can drop the ball weak and short in the court and cause it to sit up..

    Don’t agree - firstly you already have to decide to run around to play forehand - second, for an ambidextrous player who’s always played that way, the decisions are easier, it would be on court position & ball angle, no different. Also, don’t assume their forehand will be equal on both wings, a weaker ambi forehand would still be better than a backhand, they’ll favour their strength like every player.

    This rule delivers the right amount of consistent predictability (80% cross-court) with just enough variety (20% down the line) so the opponent has to "keep guessing". As for me well, I don't have to guess but just execute the plan.

  • @speedypete4987

    In some ways, it doesn't matter if the rule is "ideal" so much as adequate or consistent. For example, a might have rule whereby I go to the gym on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Of course going on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday is just as good but I don't have to think about it so that saves time and energy.

    The reason I switched to playing ambidextrous was I got a herniated disk, which led to terrible sciatica. I could barely walk for a couple of years. My doctor told me the muscles in my back weren't supporting the disks evenly because the ones on the right were a lot stronger than the ones on the left. Eventually the sciatica went away. When I tried to start playing again, I figured muscle memory would kick in and I'd be back to my old self in no time. Well, my muscle memory remembered how I played when I was a barefoot little boy banging balls against a wall, before I ever took any lessons. I was a mess. I thought, maybe if I teach my left side how to play, it will remind my right side how to do it. After about an hour on a ball machine I had a leftie forehand that was much stronger than my rightie backhand. The sciatica went away and I don't have to take pain medications anymore.

    Coach when I played I used 2 topspin types. The first is the same as what you described her but I followed thru to opposite side. This one I used to keep my opponent deep with high percentage net clerance shots. When the time was right in the rally, I went to my unconventional killer shot hybrid called flatspin. It breaks all the tennis rules of lag , wrist and body varieties. It resembles a Mike tyson punch as far as execution. All body parts are rigid, shoulders and arm. Power is generated with quick hip rotation as opposed to the whippy motion employed in modern tennis topspin paradigms. It is based on the shoulder rising socket technique, i learned at USPTR certification session. They used it for slice approach and I a adapted for topspin. IMy swing is generated by my hips and as the swing comes forward on a flat shot hitting plan my shoulder and elbow lift to skim over the top part of the ball. Creating a hard struck ball with violent topspin and because of the toward the net trajectory it stays low and skids throu the cout like a hard slice. Sounds weird but it works and fast players can't run underneath it.

It is not an every shot stroke, but when you are putting the point away it is effective. In addition, if you are attacking short shots,it is very compact and made for attacking balls on the road. If a volks beettle going 300 mph hits a motor cycle going 125 mph...that is the modern lag tennis stroke. While flatspin stroke because of the body rigidity and violent hip acceleration is that same motorcycle at 125mph getting hit by an 18 wheeler traveling 60 mph. Both strokes involve mass and acceleration with similar results.

      @@CoachAdrian Coco fixed her handle butt placement problem. She is getting more lag on the forehand and therefore more spin although she still has a full western. Matt Daly strategy of hitting more forehands down the line is forcing her opponents to feed her backhand beast or risk following up with most difficult shot in tennis' backhand down the line. Lastly, she is attacking short balls and coming forward instead of attacking short balls and retreating back to the baseline like she used to do. Lastly on the serve she is hitting actual targets and increasing her angle of acceptance by leaving the ground.

For instance, if i want to hit down the line, I want to feelike I am fast pushing past the contact point to the left before i go to my follow thru. Ha. I'm glad someone did a positive vid on the Moon-ball.(The rest of the vids on this subject are 'How to beat a Moon-baller.) That really tells us, that there's some positive things to this game style, that shouldn't be discounted. I think you've picked up on a defensive component. But I'll share that I played a guy who was on fire one evening, hitting winners from everywhere. So, I decided to just hit very slow heavy top-spin balls to him that said 'Hit me.' The trick is, that a lot of players that hit winners like to have 'pace' coming at them, that they can re-direct. Once we make a player 'generate their own pace,' a lot of players technique will break down. They can then lose confidence. Then we can build on that. I've seen some good players, lose against this strategy. Great vid.

      Indeed! 👍 A lot of players don't like having to generate their own pace!

    Not only does that 1st slice give him time to rest but also look at how his opponent cannot really do much with his backhand and leaves the ball short at 2:19 which allows him to hit another low slice which his opponent pops up his next backhand for a easy volley put away.

    I mean realistically, there are many "worse" shots he could have hit there. And I dont think many players have the intention to hit a shot thats short and high, for reasons you stated. You are practically asking for the point to be put away if you hit it there. But calling it a type of "shot" when its him just trying to keep the ball in play from a very good return back at him doesnt make much sense. If you do that, you might as well make a video talking about how terrible of a shot a short high ball that hardly makes it over the net is when you have to sprint for a ball and hardly be able to put it back in the court. Im just having a hard time understanding how we're calling that a type of shot when its a mistake like any other

    • @CoachAdrian
      @CoachAdrian 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I merely pointing out what I consider the worst shot or pattern in singles tennis is the backhand DTL that ends up short/slow to opponent's forehand. Of course, players have no intention of bad shots. People make mistakes, but this is a mistake that is particularly bad! This video is really a follow up to my other videos on this topic: th-cam.com/video/PPosNTRl1u4/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/-ZqtYo42a4I/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/B0LxvkQPEDY/w-d-xo.html

    I really struggle with this kind of video. Yes, its kind of obvious that a ball hit inches from the baseline on your backhand will cause you trouble. And what do we learn from that? Not a lot. The attacking player may want to hit balls that deep, but we are not robots. Intentionally targeting that would be a mistake due to the easy possibility to hit just a little longer and lose the point. Consistency is a key factor in matches, and going so close to the lines is not a strategy I would teach any player. Tennis is a sport of percentages, and knowing WHEN to take a risk.

    • @CoachAdrian
      @CoachAdrian 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn't say that hitting balls mere inches from the baseline is something you should always target. Even pros can't realistically do this. What I did try to say is hitting deep to an opponent's backhand side is usually a good tactic.

    In my experience, if your goal is simply to have a chance at beating a better player, you need to: 1. Break their rhythm with variety. 2. Force them to play YOUR game and style instead of the other way around. 3. Protect and circumvent your weaknesses as much as you can. 4. Try to make them lose focus by them becoming bored, frustrated or angry.

    • @CoachAdrian
      @CoachAdrian 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is generally good advice - for players you have a possibility of beating. This video is for players whom you can't beat and where there's an obvious skill level gap. You can't win against them, but you can still do something to improve your tennis. Then, just maybe in the future, you can get up to that level.
