As much as I find Mr Ernst a nice person, no, as someone who worked twelve years in social work.... Freedom of speech ends when entire groups of people are denigrated, when individuals can click and commit suicide because a comedian who lost his father to suicide thinks that that's OK to tell the crowd to go kill themselves. There's plenty of comedy without racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia or mental health phobia. Comedy is a platform that can kill. End of story. Yes, comedians use it to talk about their own issues without realising that they repeat themselves while thinking that they overcame the abuse because they can laugh at it . But that's only half the story, in truth a lot is being hidden and pushed down. Titus, Burr, Iglesias have similar issues related to the abuse they themselves endured, but it all revolves around them. Comedy is also a trap. Long monologues on stage, no responses from anyone. Then, they do interviews where people ask them to talk more about they think, what they experience. And that experience, as deep as it is, is also very limited and self centred.. Many famous comedians all 'moved' towards racist/offensive jokes, denigrating groups from all places and experiences. This, whilst spending years circling around the same concepts. That's the Hollywood politics actually, pushing on us comedians who are offensive whilst maneuvering the situation to make it look that 'equality' is the problem. It doesn't take a genius to see this. I do like Mr Ernst, but the truth is that I simply get the mechanism of his comedy because of my experience and years of work in mental health care. But, it is offensive -and it is dangerous to listen for people who have mental health-. Same for Titus and Burr, and many others including Hart and Chapelle. Being able to modify your act over the years would be a sign of strength not weakness. (Wow, I rarely write this much, maybe it'll go somewhere).
