COPP Survey - Rob Crane
United Kingdom
Dedicated to Combined Operations Pilotage Parties (COPP), a top-secret unit from the Second World War that did covert surveys of enemy-held beaches.
Logan Scott-Bowden’s advert for the Ulster Defence Regiment
In 1970 - 26 years after he left COPP - Logan Scott-Bowden was the inaugural commander of the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR). The establishment of the UDR was an attempt to form a territorial unit drawn from both the Catholic and the Protestant communities.
Scott-Bowden’s task was to raise the unit and lead its initial recruitment. A big publicity campaign included this advert, produced by the Central Office of Information, which included an ‘interview’ carried out by former 'Z Cars' actor David Mahlowe.
Around 18% of the UDR's initial recruits were from the Catholic community. However, this percentage reduced dramatically within just a few years.
Scott-Bowden left the role in August 1971 after being promoted to Major-General and appointed Head of the British Liaison Staff in India.

Operation Plunder - crossing the Rhine
Operation Plunder was an amphibious crossing of the Rhine carried out by Allied forces starting from the night of 23-24 March 1945. Shortly before the crossing, COPP were called on to do reconnaissance of the eastern bank. Nick Hastings, the officer in charge of COPP Depot on Hayling Island, quickly organised things and a team comprising mainly of men from COPP 5 flew from the UK to Germany, ca...
The development of Gee (and QH)
By the middle of 1942, the Royal Navy was starting to use a navigation aid that was originally developed for the RAF. In RAF use it was called 'Gee', but for navy use it was 'QH'. COPP used it during Nomandy D-Day operations to help fix their position. However, on the sea it was seemingly not always reliable. Find out more about QH: www.coppsurvey.uk/homing-and-beach-marking-equipment/#QH I've ...
On 29 September 1940, while under the temporary command of Norman Teacher, its navigating officer and a future COPPist, HMAS Stuart was returning to Alexandria in Egypt. Stuart had sailed from Alexandria with the Allied fleet a couple of days previously, but then developed a fault that forced it to leave the fleet and start heading back to Alexandria. That night, while still travelling back, St...
Before joining Combined Operations Pilotage Parties (COPP) in 1943, Ruari McLean served as the Royal Navy's liaison officer on the Free French submarine Rubis. This footage shows Rubis captain Henri Rousselot awarding the Croix de Guerre to four members of Rubis' crew. There's then a very brief glimpse of Rousselot talking with McLean. Even though I've slowed it down, the scene lasts just secon...
MGB 81 on the Solent
MGB 81 is a 1942-launched motor gun boat that has been restored by the Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust’s Boathouse 4. They regularly take ‘paying punters’ out on the boat - and the other week I was among them. It was a fantastic experience - sailing out past the former submarine base HMS Dolphin/Fort Blockhouse and up and down the Solent - waters that many COPPists would have known very we...
Operation Torch - landings near Algiers
In November 1942, Anglo-American forces carried out the first large-scale amphibious assault of the Second World War when they carried out Operation Torch, landings in Vichy French held Morocco and Algeria. Two months previously, Nigel Clogstoun-Willmott had been asked to assemble a group to carry out beach reconnaissance (Party Koodoo) and assault pilotage/beach marking (Party Inhuman). After ...
Building a temporary airfield in south-east Asia
Towards the end of the Second World War, Combined Operations Pilotage Parties (COPP) in south-east Asia were sometimes given the additional task of surveying sites for potential airfields. This is known to have happened in at least: • Operation Baboon and Operation Copyright in March 1945 - which both looked at sites on Phuket Island in modern-day Thailand • Operation Confidence in June 1945 - ...
Invasion of Elba!
On 17 June 1944, Allied forces carried out Operation Brassard, landings on the German-held island of Elba, off the west coast of Italy. The landings were preceded by reconnaissance carried out by COPP 2 in late May 1944. On the day of the landings, COPP 2 provided beach marking for the initial wave of assault troops that landed on Louise Green Beach, slightly further west along the coast from G...
Riding Falklands War LCVP Foxtrot 8
Foxtrot 8 is a Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel that saw action furing the Falklands War, sailing from HMS Fearless. It's now restored and takes passengers out into Portsmouth harbour for 20-minute rides. It's probably the closest you can get to sailing in an actual Second World War-era landing craft and feeling a bit of what that was like. F8 is probably closest to the Second World War's Landin...
The DD Amphibious Tank
This post-war film shows the operation of a Sherman Duplex Drive ‘DD’ tank. The film was produced in January 1946. Although the DD tank shown may have received some upgrades compared with the ones used during the Second World War, the basic operating principles should have been broadly the same. After a bit about the theory behind making a tank float, the film has three sections: • Sea-operatin...
Combined Operations: Beach Organisation
What happened on a landing beach after COPP had guided in the first wave of landing craft? The short answer is: logistics. This film was made before the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943. It uses animated maps and live action to help explain the role, structure and organisation of a beach maintenance area during the early stages of an amphibious landing. The film is available through the I...
‘West Africa Was There’ - landings at Ruywa, Burma
This extract is from a 1945 news film called ‘West Africa Was There’ which now seems pretty dated. The film follows the progress of the 81st and 82nd (West Africa) Divisions as they advanced south through the Arakan (now known as Rakhine State) in Burma (now Myanmar). At Ruywa, COPP had carried out reconnaissance and pilotage to assist with the initial landings - carried out by the 25th Indian ...
X-23 on D-Day
UPDATE: I've recently been contacted by someone who knew COPP 9's Jim Booth (seen at the bow of X-23 in this clip) who says Jim told him the man climbing the ladder to board Largs was COPP 9's senior officer, Geoffrey Lyne. Combined Operations Pilotage Parties (COPP) used the midget submarine X-23 to mark Sword Beach during the Normandy D-Day landings. Afterwards, before being towed back to Gos...
George Honour introduces the X-craft midget submarines
George Honour was commanding officer of the British midget submarine X-23. On D-Day, 6 June 1944, his boat carried men from Combined Operations Pilotage Parties (COPP) to provide beach marking off Sword Beach. They used beacons and other signals equipment to guide in the first wave of the assault to the right part of the coast. In this video, Honour talks through the features of a standard X-cr...
