Try Mealworms For Protein In the Colder Months
One of the best protein-rich treats you can offer your flock during winter is mealworms. These small insects are packed with benefits. First, they are an incredibly dense source of protein, providing the necessary energy for your flock to combat the chill. Mealworms also contain healthy fats, which are important for maintaining body weight and providing a slow-burning source of energy throughout the day. We will tell you all about how they can benefit your flock in the wintertime.

Why Do Chickens Puff Up In Cold Weather?
มุมมอง 1617 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Our Florida weather got down to 40 degrees today, and I noticed the chickens puff up their bodies to double their size when they’re outside in the cold. This behavior is their way of trapping warm air close to their skin, creating a natural insulation layer to keep themselves warm. We will show you a few of the hens that do this and why. Winter Months For Chickens In A Warm Climate
มุมมอง 6514 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Chickens are hardy animals and can generally tolerate temperatures as low as 32°F (0°C) without much trouble, provided they are healthy and have a well-maintained coop. In the warmer climates during the winter months, temperatures rarely dip that low, but sudden cold snaps can still affect chickens, especially if they aren’t acclimated. We will explain how to keep your chickens happy and health...

Quick question, about neighbours chicken 😊 Why would it cluck for 24hrs? Normally very quiet, gets clucky @ feeding time
@shaylahkelevitz7903 25 24 hrs is a long time to cluck. They cluck when someone lays an egg, they could be irritated about something and cluck. So many reasons, but I never knew of 1 that clucked for an entire day. More like off and on clucking that can feel like they've been doing it for 24 hrs!
Aucune idée !! Quelqu'un sait ??
@@MartinePFISTER thank you for watching!
I'm fortunate enough to have 4 separate pens to isolate new birds and growing chicks. They also get natural probiotic kefir, just like the cats and humans do! 😁
@strawberryhellcat4738 That is awesome! You have a good amount of pens to keep them separate should any of them get sick, perfect set up. Kefir is great too. You have a perfect setup to keep yours as healthy as possible. Thank you for watching!🧡
My neighbors chickens are always in our yard, he has a fence but when its left open they come over to say hi 😊, i think after this, im shooing them away....
@CarelessWhisper-k2p right, you never know what they could bring over. Best to be on the safe side. Thank you for watching us!🥰
Plus, there are a dozen or so herbs that can be planted in protected boxes inside their run that specifically boost their immune systems to help prevent an outbreak in the first place. They are great for all birds and most mammals for the same reason. They are also great to treat illness if it occurs. There isn't an ailment that can hit us that God hasn't created a treatment or cure for. ❤️🕊🙌✝️
@s.s.9149 that is a good point! So many herbs that chickens can eat that help prevent sickness and keep them healthy. We did plant herbs with our flock last year and they loved them.Thank you for sharing that!🩷
@Mothercluckerschickenfarm You're welcome. There is SO much information out there to remember when you keep any livestock, it's hard to keep track of it all, or recall every relevant point, even if you know it. 😊 I'm glad to help alleviate any fears of a backyard outbreak.
@s.s.9149 definitely ! Appreciate it!
Great points! Great point in the very beginning about how it does make a difference what ambient conditions our flocks are accustomed to...30°F on a flock in a usually warm climate can have a more dramatic impact than 30°F on a flock in a colder climate...what they're used to definitely impacts their comfort levels with ambient conditions! Great point also toward the end about feeding extra protein strategically at certain times of day. Loved all the background info on the benefits of mealworm, too. Great video!
Thank you Melissa!!! Greatly appreciate your feedback, glad you found it interesting. If I were to take my hens up to your area with the weather you are having now, I doubt they would survive. Amazing how they adapt to the climates. Especially how hardy yours are, and we have the same type breed, Rhode Island Reds, but our breed would not survive where you are. Thank you for watching!❤
@@Mothercluckerschickenfarm You're welcome! 😊 Especially loved the images of your flock in this video!

@Mothercluckerschickenfarm Oh, yes! That would be great to include on our channel! I just want to really be able to have a safe & comfortable house & place & habitat for them before we get any ducks.
@twinoaksfarmpoultry right! I definitely understand. 🧡
Happy New Year and everybody keep ur chickens warm! 🌡️🐔🌡️
Happy New Year! Thank you! Yes, they seem to love the weather, cold but not unbearable for them. The sun helps too!! Thank you for watching.🥰😃
@Mothercluckerschickenfarm We're in a winter warning in our area with sleet and ice in the mix. I'm so thankful we've got our chickens in a chain link 10 x 15 x 6 dog kennel, covered with plastic on all sides including the top, with their handmade, draft free snug house with a Sweeter heater in it. In 20 degree weather, it is in the high forties inside at night with the doors closed. Rain and ice and snow don't accumulate in their enclosed yard. They have a free standing wooden structure which I made, of three nest boxes in a row with a 2x4 roost attached across the front to access the boxes or just to roost. They love it and spend most of their time around it, though they love being inside their house (which also has an attached nesting box) during the daytime cold weather too. It is so much easier to take care of them and to stay warm myself as I tend to them, with all of us inside the plastic covering.
@@amel2784 Wow, this is awesome! You definately have it all figured out as to how to care for them and keep them as warm as possible. That is so great! Glad you are able to stay warm also while tending to them. Thank you so much for sharing that with us, since we don't have to go thru those steps in our warm climate, but it's good to know what others need to do with their flock to keep them warm and safe from this winter weather. What a great job you do and I am sure the chickens thank you! Stay warm and thank you for watching us!❤
@@Mothercluckerschickenfarm Thank you for ur kind words. 😊 Keeping them warm at night sure does also help cut down on the feed bill.
@@amel2784 absolutely!!! And anything to save $$ on the feed,😅 is always a good thing.
Was the first chicken in the short a Buff Orpington? Pretty bird! Love seeing all the birds! Yes, they can zip right along.
Hi Melissa! The first chicken in the short was an isa brown. I think the intense sunlight when I was taking the video didn't show the collar area of the hen very well, the brown type markings around her collar. We do have 2 buff orpingtons, but they are smaller still, about 2 months old now. Thank you for watching us!! Always appreciate you.❤❤
@@Mothercluckerschickenfarm Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, she looked so light feathered in the very first shot. I wouldn't have guessed Isa Brown, but I was thinking the build looks slightly different than an Orpington...but I can see how the sun made a pale effect of the feathering. We have had some really crazy optical illusions from the effects of sunlight in a few recordings; in one, the chickens actually looked see-through & transparent...you could actually see the background through the chicken in the foreground on the footage...it was creepy but cool looking at the same time...the only thing we could figure was it was an effect of the lighting. It was a short with Ghost Riders In The Sky music put to it...supposedly it was going to be taken down for a music question but it stayed up as far as I know.
@twinoaksfam I saw that video! I loved it!! That light can really play with the Camera at times.🤪

Roosters can be a very big help protecting hens!
@@twinoaksfam definitely!! They do a lot for our hens. Thank you for watching Melissa!🥰🥰
@@Mothercluckerschickenfarm You're welcome! I noticed when we had roosters the flock ranged alot further because the hens had confidence the rooster was a guardian for them. Without a rooster, they stay much closer to their coop.
@@twinoaksfam yes, with our flock, we can tell the hens are at ease with foraging everywhere, cause they seem to sense they are well protected by the roosters.😁
Love this video! Enjoyed seeing your flock & learning from you, but I also enjoyed feeling like I was in your mild climate for a 5 minute reprieve from Winter! Thanks! Great video!
