Starlink 10-2 SpaceX Launch, re-entry burn, SeaWorld Fireworks (and Hobbes (the cat))
June 23, 2024 - 4K SpaceX Falcon 9 Starlink 10-2 launch over La Jolla.
Some camera shake (not a fluid head tripod), some focus drift (when zooming), but some good tight footage here and there...
1:40 - Clear bright booster in the plume (through the clouds)
2:10 - Fairings become visible (fairly good tight shot)
3:02 - (focus gets soft, camera gets shaky (sorry))
3:48 - SeaWorld Fireworks.
4:40 - Re-entry burn.
This was shot on a Sony A9 with a Sony 70-200 2.8 II, aperture set to f3.2, ISO Auto 100-6400.
I think this launch video is much better (but no fireworks): th-cam.com/video/mA-xScbbUsc/w-d-xo.html
That was handheld, but pretty well stabilized (shorter lens 28-70mm).
What I learned this time (well, confirming my eclipse video lesson): I can't trust the electronic viewfinder without my glasses. I'll have to start shooting with my eyeglasses (darn!). I should try the EFV diopter setting. In any case, zooming throws off focus and I need to be able to adjust quickly and precisely.

Telescope Lens: Immaculate or Filthy?
มุมมอง 173 หลายเดือนก่อน
When buying used telescopes, nothing beats seeing it in person. Photos can make a filthy lens look great or make "invisible" dust or imperfections glaring. Here, I took a VERY clean lens out into direct sunlight, and set the camera to make it look bad (f/1.4 and overexposed two stops). So, how nasty should your "for sale" photos be?

how'd it go? I had good luck my first time with me cell phone. After that, when i knew what to expect, I got something completely different: nothing (could barely see them visually)

@@golookup Not happy with the footage. I used manual focus to keep the camera from searching for focus, but I had it set a smidge off. It was quite a sight though, against the post sunset deep indigo sky. Watched it from Sunset Cliffs, catching the booster’s reentry off of Baja.

@@bobshafto sorry, I misunderstood you (I was thinking "starlink train"). I got lucky with my mid-recording switch to manual focus because between the electronic viewfinder and my iffy eyesight, I couldn't really tell. Sunset Cliffs seems like a really good spot for videoing.

@@jeffmartin-g8r For this event, I set up on Luscomb's Point. I've never planned and prepped for a Vandenberg launch before, but for this one I wanted to be able to have a view to the horizon towards the launch site and be able to see the horizon where the booster would be landing. There's a great spot I know that's got better elevation, but it's on DoD property so not allowed to video/photograph. There's another SpaceX Starlink launch scheduled for Friday evening, but I don't think the weather is going to cooperate. But I'll be better prepared for next time.

    I would recommend a short tube 80 as a beginner refractor. 🙂

im a beginner with telescopes and i have a celestron omni az 102, which i do know is a beginner telescope! do you have any suggestions for making objects more detailed or bigger while i save money for my next telescope, and any telescope suggestion for the next one?

that's a great starter scope (th-cam.com/video/Qt13w1U-0Gg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Yt0C2KIw60WYk_GM), a good eyepiece will transfer to all your next scopes and will make observing better (th-cam.com/video/5PbJvB-j-DQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HAahn29ouURzN0PN). A dobsonian is an inexpensive way to "see deep" and "see big" (th-cam.com/video/MR05uzsr8vk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=UvDQ75V7gtoMZl5T)

I was reluctant to mount the camera because it goes close to overhead, sometimes the mount doesn't like that and you lose the shot. I'll keep practicing (and sharing).
