I am inspired, i am from South Africa and also part of the ATNS bursary tp be an air traffic controller and watching this made me realize that nothing is impossible. Thank you.

In response to the crash of German Wings flight 9525, the EU published safety rules to ensure that flight crews have access to support programs to ensure that they are free of conditions that may affect them while exercising their license privileges. In addition, the safety rules require psychological evaluation of flight crews before they get employed and before being given a command upgrade. My opinion is that the industry is so focused on the well-being of flight crews to the detriment of other personnel and it is time for other frontline personnel like ground staff and maintenance personnel to receive similar attention and care. Safety requires that everybody involved in aviation operations is "free of conditions" that may affect their performance. Thanks for the session, Tom.

The emotional dynamic of culture is not that the person gets blamed for the mistake, but that the emotional maturity of many cultures is such that the person becomes more self-embarrassed rather than fearing blame. Many cultures have little ability to adapt to a technological culture where preventing a mistake is far more important than avoiding embarrassment. Preventing mistakes saves lives, preventing embarrassment only saves ego.

Safety only works when embraced by the entire organisation. Training the board is a good starting point. Africans are good at cramming but not applying. The principles in Blooms taxonomy of educational objectives need to be emphasised more when conducting training in Africa.

Given the number of flights daily across Africa - both in commercial and private ownership (Private which is more in Southern Africa), there is a lot to be proud of as there is a lot flights landing safely at airports and being navigated through airspace every hour. It can only get better as Africa develops a more sophisticated and much larger aviation industry in the next 30 years.

We need to raise the bar on safety worldwide. While working on a PhD in Aviation Safety, I provided a safety report to my Airline and they paid a doctor to give me a false mental health diagnosis. Mental health is a serious issue in the industry, and not to be used for retaliation. I not only hold a PhD, but an MBA and MHS... focus on mental health.... and an advocate for safety.
