I should mention here that Popeye’s original power wasn’t super strength from ingesting spinach- Popeye's original power was he was so lucky you couldn’t kill him. He could survive any punishment handed to him, and come back for more.The 1929 story arc that introduced him also introduced the Wiffle Hen. If you rubbed the three feathers on top of her head, you got luck. Popeye rubbed so much luck out of her he not only survived taking 16 bullets in the chest at point blank range, he was able to pulverize the guy who shot him. Popeye was a tough dock brawler, but as Thimble Theatre went along, he became more and more super human, and it wasn’t just because he ate spinach. At first, Segar used spinach sparingly in the strip, and I think he thought it would be funny that Popeye’s favorite dish was something most people would avoid eating if they could. Yes, it did give Popeye strength and vitality when needed... In a 1932 story arc set in an outlaw town in the Southwest, Popeye is overwhelmed and stomped in a saloon by a mob of rustlers and other bad actors, and then thrown out into the desert for the buzzards to scavenge. Olive brings him a can of spinach, he wolfs it down, then revived, Popeye goes back into the saloon and totally kicks arse. When he’s finished, nobody’s left standing except him. But spinach or no spinach, luck or no luck, Popeye was already showing signs he was super strong and almost invulnerable, and it’s because I believe that Segar, whose favorite reading material was science fiction, had read Philip Wyle’s 1930 novel “Gladiator”, about a super man trying to fit into this merely human, flawed corrupt world of ours. It was a serious novel, but it looks like Segar took the concept, and through Popeye, made something preposterous out of it. Again, though, Segar originally used spinach sparingly in Thimble Theatre, but it was the Fleischer Popeye cartoons- Which by 1936 were beating out Mickey Mouse cartoons in popularity polls- that made spinach into a ritual. This was the period that thanks to the Fleischer’s, Segar started to use spinach more and more in Thimble Theatre. 1936 was also the year Popeye defeated a fascist dictator. This was the year that Mussolini banned American comic strips in Italy, but Italian public opinion forced him to make two exceptions- Popeye and Mickey Mouse. Take that, Il Duce! According to Segar, Popeye was was 45 years old. He didn’t squint, he’d lost an eye, and all of his teeth, too, probably knocked out in dock brawls. That didn’t stop him from eating steak and nuts. He just gummed things and swallowed. Popeye was a roughneck who liked to drink and gamble and was maybe a little too free with his fists,. But he also had a sense of justice and a kind heart. For example, he had 40 grand on him, money he got out adventuring with Castor and Olive. He comes across a ragged woman sitting forlorn on a park bench, with a baby in her lap and a little boy and girl on either side of her. She’s a widow, had lost her job, and along with her children, had been thrown out of her room because she could pay rent. She has nowhere to go, and no money to buy food. Popeye gives her $20,000 cash and tells her to buy a house and groceries for her kids. Flabbergasted, the woman thinks Popeye is crazy and tell him so. “When a kind-hearted person is seen as crazy,” says Popeye, “that ain’t sayin’ much about a world that supposed to be civilized.” Amen!

No! Not Cartoon Network! That was my favorite channel growing up as a child, and also Adult Swim, but I was too young to watch Adult Swim back then.... Cartoon Network was home to many of my favorite shows including Adventure Time, Regular Show, Ed Ed n' Eddy, Amazing World of Gumball, Dexter's Lab, Chowder, Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, and many more! 😢

Yeah, I guess it’s obvious how they can’t keep up with the competition against Nickelodeon and Disney as if they’re the dominant of all cartoons, the fact Paramount tried to buy Warner Bros just to merge with them, but it would be extremely irrelevant, because you know me, I’m loyal to Cartoon Network, not some SpongeBob or Mickey Mouse fanboy who enforces others into their opinions and not their owns, including me.
