NMM Chest Plates -Concepts in Miniature Painting Non Metallic Metals 5
Today we're tackling chest plates in two different colors of NMM!
For the bronze, for your reference, good MSP base coat colors are 9301 NMM Gold Shadow or 9127 Uniform Brown. I tend to like to start my NMM pretty dark so you could also use a lighter but similar color, 9429 Rich Leather (with some darker brown added in, or by itself--I've done both).
My highlights are four drops of the Rich Leather plus one drop white. If I were doing gold or brass instead of bronze I would add in a lot more yellow--probably a warm yellow like 9407 Lantern Yellow, and then further highlights would be that yellow plus white.

NMM on a Shoulderpad - Concepts in Miniature Painting Non-Metallic Metals 4
มุมมอง 2182 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hey there all! Back again with another NMM lesson, this time on a shoulder pad. I had to use a pretty complex one because it was the thing I had to hand, but hopefully the concepts will come through. :) There are two more videos I'd like to do chestplate and shield and I'll be looking for good models to demo those on for the coming months. Remember that I will have a companion PDF with step-by-...
NMM on a Curved Plate - Concepts in Miniature Painting Non-Metallic Metals 3
มุมมอง 1703 หลายเดือนก่อน
In our third video covering how to do NMM on various types of shapes, we're tackling a leg plate that curves around the leg and flares out slightly at the bottom. I also talk briefly about painting small scratches and glazing with white and other light paints. I'm going to be trying to do a couple more of these this month, and putting out a combined PDF with work-in-progress photos for the $2 t...

Basics of Non Metallic Metals (NMM) 1 - Sword
มุมมอง 3304 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hey there everyone! It's time to really break down some non-metallic metal (NMM) technique for y'all. I'm going to make these videos as simple as I can so that you can hopefully learn this stuff faster than I did. :) We'll be starting with the simple stuff (sword, chain mail) and progressing to the more difficult topics (shields, shoulder pads, helmets, plate armor of various types). I hope you...
Conceptual Techniques - Overview
มุมมอง 2645 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today we're going over conceptual techniques: NMM, OSL, all that stuff that has to do more with thinking and understanding how light falls on your model than it does with how you actually apply the paint! I'll cover the different topics I'm looking to explore in future videos in this series, and I'll share four factors to keep in mind when you're starting to understand how to paint imaginary li...
Basic Color Mixing - Concepts in Miniature Painting 4
มุมมอง 1946 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hey there everyone! Here I've compiled some of my most basic tips and tricks if you're interested in diving into color mixing. This is a mountain of a topic, just like with color theory. Unlike with color theory, however, a lot of what you can learn about color mixing is best learned from actually doing it. Don't be afraid of it just start with one color, and tell yourself that you're just goin...
Concepts in Miniature Painting - Color Theory Part 3 - Triadic Color Schemes -
มุมมอง 2367 หลายเดือนก่อน
We're back at color theory today with a video on triadic color schemes! Sooo many works of art work with triadic schemes. The primary triad is red, yellow, and blue; the secondary green, orange, and purple. As with our previous video, these don't need to be pure versions of these colors to work. In this video I show a ton of examples of both schemes and talk about how to tweak them to be a litt...
Concepts in Miniature Painting - Color Theory Part 2
มุมมอง 2698 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hey there folks! In this one I'm out to do two things: 1. Show you the way I think about colors, which lets me think outside of the box on what otherwise would be pretty basic color schemes; and 2. Use that knowledge to then talk about our first color relationship category: complementary color schemes. I'll use painted example models to illustrate how myself or my husband has painted a compleme...
Is There a Wrong Way to Hold Your Brush? Miniature Painting Fundamentals Shorts 4

Weirdly, this question was asked by my husband, who's a multi-award-winning, even international-level award-winning miniatures painter. But the man also holds a brush weirder than anyone I've ever met. So...I figured I'd do a video! Enjoy, everyone. :D

NOTE: This video will have a $2 companion PDF on my Patreon this month! Patreon.com/paintingbig Hey there all! This is a new Concepts video to follow up the one on Paint Lines. Just what I was looking for. I've a batch of dwarf minis I decided to go NMM on (seemed like a good idea at the time) but the usual way I do it would have taken a hot minute. I'll need to figure a couple of things out, but between this and your second video where you show chainmail, I think I have enough to plan it out properly. Thank you very much!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH,theres so much advice online,and everyone always says thin your paint use a wet pallete etc,and i can never seem to figure out what i need to do or why my paint doesnt come out that creamy smooth that everyone else's does your advice that of using a wet pallet you can just use the paint as is helped me so much,alot of people say two thin coats including yourself,but it seemed like id have to use 4-5 coats just to get opaque coverage and i was only adding a drop of water to the paint,this has been so helpful thank you,also how do you decide what color your base coat should be ? is it just the color you intend the final product to be or do you paint over your base coat?

    I primarily use a wet palette, but I do have a small plastic well palette I use for certain tasks, and they're actually not difficult to keep clean. I wait for any paint to dry, peel out what I can, and then just fill the well with 91% isopropyl alcohol. It's inexpensive and you can get it at any drugstore. Let it sit for a while and then wipe it clean with a paper towel - or you could just use an alcohol-based first aid prep pad with the same results. No abrasion when I use this method, and I can get the palette squeaky clean - unlike my friend who's never cleaned his and now it could be used as armor.

  • @HeadHunterSix
    @HeadHunterSix 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    At least with parchment type membranes, there is no need to pre-soak the paper. When you place the dry paper on the wet sponge, yes, it will curl - but as the paper absorbs more water, it will begin to lay flat on its own. This is also better because you're not stretching the fibers in the paper. I'm not a professional painter but I am a professional baker, and I notice the same behavior on a larger scale.

  • @HeadHunterSix
    @HeadHunterSix 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A drop of flow improver can also improve the performance of a homemade wash (such as in your previous video), but a little bit goes a long way. Too much can cause it to become more like a glaze and lose the ability to collect in the recesses.

  • @HeadHunterSix
    @HeadHunterSix 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I find the best way to unload a brush when using thinner paints like 1:1 or a glaze, is to generally tap just the tip to a piece of tissue. That capillary effect that wicks wet paint up towards the ferrule, is the same effect that will draw excess water out of the belly of the brush, leaving you with thin paint on the brush but without the excess fluid.
