Why Linear Algebra?
มุมมอง 138K10 ปีที่แล้ว
Linear algebra studies the dynamics of the simplest possible interactions among multiple variables. Its fundamentals are essential to all areas of mathematics.

Using examples from a second semester calculus course, we illustrate this powerful concept that pervades mathematical theory and application.
Zeno's Paradox, Part II: Geometric Sequences

A closer examination of details of the smaller and larger problems of Zeno's paradox leads to an amazingly useful pattern called geometric sequence. Find Dr. Lyons' Geometric Sequence Drawing here: tinypic.com/r/jfcev4/5
Zeno's Paradox, Part I: A Puzzle and A Flaw
มุมมอง 7K10 ปีที่แล้ว
One of the most powerful and basic strategies in problem solving is: (1) break a large, complicated problem into smaller, simpler pieces; (2) solve the smaller problems, and; (3) reassemble those small solutions into one large solution. Zeno of Elia (a Greek philosopher in the 400s BCE) posed stark thought experiments that go right to the heart of what can go wrong with this process. We continu...

Can someone please explain, if you can how the length of a vector, which is 1D “a line” (length of cross product vector) can be equal to the area which is 2D (2d space includes more information width and length)?

Do you really believe that Zeno didn't figure out that 1/2 +1/4+1/8+1/16+... gets close to but doesn"t exceed 1? You apoear not to understand the paradox.

Excellent description. Teaching mathematics is an art. Most lecturers fail by not explaining the nomenclature properly. They often assume students are familiar with complex notation. They often are not. Mathematics is a language like French or German - you need to learn the grammar and vocabulary to become proficient.

This is most helpful. Thank you for posting it. When at the end of the video you discuss using a matrix to perform operations from x_n to y_m, you seem to ignore the constant term(s). Some presenters exclude the constant term(s) altogether when discussing linear algebra. I'm not sure what to think about this. Does adding a constant term to each individual equation interfere with the use of matrices?

to focus on " the rabbit has to catch up to the turtle" is like a magicians trick distraction the viewer while he switches the cards. what is ignore is that the rabbit will keep moving at the same speed, so it will catch up with the turtle a bit after point 2. In the set up it is presented as if the turtle gets slower and slower.

why are matrices used in linear algebra. Why not any other data structure like a tree or graph?? I find in all books I've seen about Linear Algebra all use the same concept. Please help me I need to clear this doubt. I know matrix consists of same type of elements but still, couldn't I use any other data structure for the solving of linear equations ?

    • @GuyMichaely

If you find a way to effectively reason with and manipulate vectors and vector spaces using a data structure other than a matrix, go for it and publish your results. Matrices are used because they allow us to reason about vectors and vector spaces in a useful way
