The khomok is a stringed instrument used in folk music from Bengal, Odisha, and North East India. It's also known as the anandalahari, gubgubi, or bugchu:
Description
A one-headed drum with a string that's attached to a small brass handle. The string passes through the wooden drum body and is pierced through the skin head.
How to play
Place the drum body under your arm, pluck the string with your stronger hand, and pull the brass handle with your weaker hand. The tension on the string is constantly adjusted to produce a vocal-like sound.
Variations
Some khomoks have two strings that are played at the same time. In Maharashtra, the khomok is played with the cord pulled from the outside, which is known as the katho.
Origin
The khomok originated about 500 years ago and originally had a single string, but was later modified to have two.
