Spirit of Sauna podcast - #11: Five Elements of Sauna
In this episode, Laura and Otto talk about the heart of the sauna’s elemental forces: Air, Fire, Earth, and Water.
Each element plays a unique role in the creation of löyly, both in its tangible and metaphysical forms.
We explore how Air circulates, Fire fuels, Earth grounds, and Water awakens the löyly that elevates the sauna experience into something truly transcendent. Beyond its physical essence, löyly embodies the ethereal connection between nature and self.
Why have ancient traditions revered these elements for centuries? How do they bring harmony to the human spirit?

Spirit of Sauna podcast - #7: Nakedness
มุมมอง 2576 หลายเดือนก่อน
Since forever, bathers in Finland have gone to the sauna room fully naked. This is not only a practical matter, as the sauna has, for most of our history, been the only place to wash oneself, but it also has profound spiritual significance. The idea of wearing a swimsuit in a sauna is merely a few decades old and, amusingly enough for our foreign listeners, still very much taboo in some circums...

I'm an American trans woman, I desperately wish I could have these experiences of non sexual nakedness and ritual sweating I can't really go to the places here because they are body segregated. I do wish I could relax into the present with a bunch of people who don't see my body as dangerous Even still I know what it feels like to have this water chakra energy raises in my body, it gets stronger the more you resist and hide it and you're asked by everyone around you never to practice dispelling this in community

This was lovely to listen to! I recently went to a Finnish sauna in Germany where plants and fans were used, and it truly felt like a ritual. My parents have a small sauna at home so I have known it all my life, but this was a different experience, I felt something special, a spirit and energy, I think what you refer to as Löyly. This sparked my curiosity, so I was very happy to stumble across your podcast and am curious to learn and experience more. You have a beautiful way of conveying the wisdom and tradition I see in it! Thank you! <3

Great podcast. Also listening from America. Michigan to be exact. Largest concentration of Finns outside of Finland. It doesnt make me sad it pusses me off when people say sauna is dumb and just a sweat box. Either they've never been in a good Finnish sauna or have no clue as to what real sauna is. I own two saunas. I have an electric sauna at home(kasi tehde) I may add lol. I'm picking up a 6-foot red cedar wood heated Barrel sauna Friday in Michigan's UP. I'm mounting it on a trailer as to make it mobile. I own two houses in michigan. One is at the very tip of the Michigan glove if you're looking at the map. Right on lake Huron. I made it mobile as to share sauna experience with my neighbors up there. 128 members of our association. Anyhow very excited to pick it up. Kiitos paljon kun teilla podcasti.

Great episode! "Hot, dry, and technical/mechanistic" I, too, find this approach rather sad. Being from the US, I see this approach to not only sauna, but to life all around me. For example, a person going on a hike and climbing the mountain with head down, going as fast as they can to get to the top. Taking a couple of pictures, eating a sandwich and then marching back down. Sure, they 'hiked' but they missed the essence of it.....noticing the flora and fauna, feeling the sun and breeze on their skin, feeling their muscles working and heart beating, etc. I see it now with the sauna boom. The goal to get it as hot as possible (like it's a medal of honor to be at 200 degrees), stay in for a certain number of minutes, endure the coldest of cold plunges in between. It feels people are missing the point. I had the pleasure of traveling to Finland a couple of years ago and had several sauna experiences, including an almost day long guided ceremony experience. It was magical and it was then I fell in love with sauna! For me, the essence of sauna is where it's at. I appreciate you discussing that in this episode.

Hello from Quebec, Canada ! It is a true pleasure to hear you both speak about the cultural roots of Sauna. I am already looking forward to episode #3 ! I particularly enjoy learning about the importance of sweat rituals in different cultures, such as the Native American sweat lodge or Ayurveda's Svedana, for example. Also, I am newly passionate about Sauna, and I'm preparing to build my own to enjoy with family and friends. Because I wasn't born in a country where Sauna is embedded in the culture, it would be of great value to know how someone like me can honor and respect the spirit of Sauna. In other words, if you had a friend visiting from another country who knew very little about Sauna, what would you want to share with him/her to allow for the best possible experience ? All the best ! 🌞

Awesome! Subscribed. And thank you!🙂 I got here through first looking at putting a sauna in my house. That led to what kind of sauna or heated space(IR heat panels) which led to the very strong conviction of some of the Finnish people on the Facebook sauna pages that it was impossible to have a real sauna experience without Löyly which was impossible without water on heated rocks. So I landed on your TH-cam site to understand a little about Löyly and about the role of the sauna in the lives of many people in/from Finland.
