    Yeah, it ticks all the boxes apart from one: a hard case gives you an additional protection from handlers' negligence - whether it be throwing the bag like a sack of potatoes or stacking other luggage on top of the box. I can't imagine those guys being like "Ooh, it looks like there's a bike inside, better be careful with it". They'll just zone out and chuck everything in the same manner just to go through their day. Also one other small con: you're creating a lot of additional waste - duct/gaffer tape, zip bags that'll eventually give, zip ties, bubble wrap etc. etc.

    Hey Luke. When you're checking in at the airport, has anyone ever challenged you about having a bike in a cardboard box? For example have they said you should pay the fee for bike transport? Which is more expensive. That's always my concern when I fly with Ryanair

    • @LukeGyver
      @LukeGyver 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey, no, cause cardboard is a contained protective box. A tarp for example you can expect to be challanged. If and how much fee you pay is not down to the material, it depends on what weights and dimensions for that airline result in the smallest fees. Check the terms of service thoroughly for Ryanair, mark the sum. Ryanair, as far as I know, will charge you bike fee no matter what. The question you should ask yourself is, is the sum of all fees and fares for this airline the best you can get. Maybe Ryanair is the best. Check plenty of others. Try different airports.

    thanks mate good video well presented. personally i cant let myself rely on being able to pick up a bike box at the other end, i may not have enough time to sort one, and the idea of having something largely out of my control is a worry. it costs more but storing a bike bag (or even bike box) is my choice, sometimes you can leave it at a hotel if using both ends but if that falls through, paid storage is the way

    After taking my bike 56 times with me on the airplane this are my advices: It's not necessary to deflate the tyres unless they're pumped up to the limit. I never did it and never had a problem - because it's impossible that anything happens with it: In the airplane the tyre can expand maximum 1 bar - the natural air pressure. Regarding weight: Bike, cardboard box, paniers plus luggage weigh far more than the usual weight limit of 23 kg - therefore you'll have to pay for excess weigth anyway - therefore it doesn't help if you stuff your stuff into the bike box. Transporting a bike from one point to another never costs more than 120 dollars. From Switzerland to Germany (500 km) I had to pay 100 dollars but from Germany to New Zealand 30'000 km?) I paid nothing (zero). Usually it's 100 dollars. If you don't find a designated bicycle cardboard box just go to the supermarket and ask for any kind of cardboard boxes that you wrap around your bike with lots and lots of gaffa tape (what you also should do with a designated bike cardboard box from the bike dealer) because it can rip easily during transport - especially if it gets wet somehow. To protect your gears, put one of your empty paniers over it or a a couple of layers of cardboard it and fix it with tape. Or just remove it without removing the chain.

    • @LukeGyver
      @LukeGyver 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Here's the detailed version with the added spirit line: --- I appreciate the idea of using "any box" as a bike box - it really shows the spirit needed for these adventures, and thanks for sharing that insight despite the audio challenges. Regarding weight, 23 kg works for my current setup, including all essentials like dry bags, cages, tools, shoes, and helmet. I use a proper MTB, and I recognize that gravel bikes tend to be at least 3 kg lighter, while other setups can be significantly heavier with loaded panniers. So, as you mentioned, hitting that 23 kg limit really depends on the specific situation. On the topic of tires, I’d assume they won’t pop in transit since the cargo area is pressurized. Even new tires can typically handle being pumped up to double without issues. In the end, tires will only pop if they’re damaged or simply too old. That said, I know tires can sometimes pop unexpectedly, even when just sitting in storage, which might be why airlines often advise deflating. Personally, I’d still recommend following this guideline to avoid the risk of staff needing to open the box, which could lead to handling issues, as others here have suggested. As for transport costs, they vary a lot and are sometimes included in the fare. With careful planning and by comparing airline guidelines, it's often possible to optimize the setup and save significantly - though, of course, it isn’t always an option. I had a different opinion prior, like you do, until I took a deep dive and went down the whole rabbit whole. Thanks again for sharing your experiences and thoughts! And sorry for the audio, darn thing...

    • @svenlima
      @svenlima 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@LukeGyver Ok, deflate the tyre 1/3rd and so you're absolutely 100% safe. If you don't care pumping then deflate it completely. The whole gear/bike I carry with me weighs about 33 kg. I have a Swiss custom taylored steel frame travel bike by Robert Stolz. As I don't fancy very much taking my bike apart in order to fit it into a woman's handbag I prefer to pay 100 dollar per trip as I can afford it. Don't worry about the music in this video. I'm happy that you recognise the issue. That's enough for me. You're not alone anyway: Background music is the cancer (or corona ...) of countless videos on youtube - even on videos of professional news channels. I see 2 main different challenges in traveling with a bike and 2 or 3 different solutions to resolve them. Challenge 1. Is the out and back from the same airport. In this challenge the bike box makes a lot of sense as long as you have somewhere to store it. But if you are on an out and back then there might be the option to hire a bike locally and you don't even need a bike box!(depending on the type of cycling you are doing) Challenge 2. Is the out and back from somewhere else. In that case this video makes a lot of sense. But still some questions. all the extra "stuff" needs purchasing, tape, knife 1/2 skateboard! you can not carry this on your bike adventure. so it makes sense to find a big enough cardboard box. Whatever way you do this experience and planning are the key things. This video is great to get people starting to think about what is involved and the alternatives. some airlines include bikes as luggage allowance. Even with low cost airlines the cost of adding a bike box (filled with bike & other stuff) is the same price as "normal" tickets. You are right though weight and size are king and understanding them both is the important thing to avoid extra charges. Great Video.

    • @LukeGyver
      @LukeGyver หลายเดือนก่อน

      Appreciate that feedback as you can imagine. To your questions... Tape I always have on me. (hahaha) Seriously. Knife/Cutter as well, though it is not necessary to have. Not wanting to extend the video, but the thought was also, that e.g. most bikepackers will have a knife of some sort and if you dont put it in your box, you will have to get rid of it at security if you realize you just handed over your bike box (with all inside as you pointed out) and have no other luggage to check in. You wont need the knife/cutter as long as you use duct tape. Box will open without. Its handy for the zip tie if you caught one that does not release easy. The skateboard, yes you gotta plan that if you did not store your box, but these days I can think of at least 2 easy ways to get those without any hassle (Any downtown cheap stuff shop/ Amazon Locker). Does not need to be a skateboard even. Wonder where it will take people.

    If you're packing at the airport, forget the scales and just use the scales at one of check in counters not in use at that time. Wear your helmet until you're on the flight - leaving that in the box may make it useless by the time it arrives at your destination. (also great in an emergency 😜) Keep a mini pump (of course you need that for your tour anyway, but it's always worth mentioning, as deflated tires will mean you can't reasonably ride out of the airport) Zurich airport offers boxes for CHF 20 (around USD 20) or free for Swiss, Edelweiss and Lufthansa passengers. Bring your own roll of duct tape. Get long hook and loop strips (velcro) to fasten things to each other. Have the right tools. Ideally a torque wrench for carbon parts. Give cassette, chainring and brake discs extra wrapping, so they don't damage the box or any of the other parts and things you put in the box.

    I have a similar strategy but with some key differences. Free cardboard box yes absolutely, but 5hours ahead to get that box is insufficient for me. I have not had much luck with airports providing the box and while local bike shops are always willing they do not always have a box readily available. So i will always ring ahead airport and shops unless i have a full day before the flight to run around. I do not bother with so much bike dissasembly. Fork stays on. Derailleur and chain and rear wheel stay on. I do carry a spare derailleur hanger because of this. I will not be hacking any airline fees with a small box this way but i will always be able to pack and reassemble quickly in the airport so my box does not need to be dragged far. My simple extra tip is I have a light duffel bag that I can put panniers in together so they count as one bag. Then the duffel folded up goes back in panniers i have no extra bags.

The 1/2 or even 1/3 skateboard you can... take with you on the trip, or arrange a warm showers which will keep it for you, or send it forward to a warmshowers which is at your departing airport, or hide it close to the airport (knowing it will be there when you get back), leave it at the next bike shop (they usually dont mind something as small), or with all the same options look for something even smaller that will roll. Cause I think you are right "elegance". "Ripping" the bicycle apart is no must, in case that came across to you like that. It should let people know that you can do it though in case you will benefit from it. I disassembled my bicycle to that extreme (like you see in the video) only once. Hainan airlines, was awesome. To the thing of arriving late at a small airport. Some things are none negotiable, arrive early and know your options in advanced. If there are no shops, you should know that. You know it early enough that it will be a problem, there is FB and other where you will find people that will help you. I prefer to have some things planned out and sit at the airport with a burger watch people check in, whilst other things I love to just go and not know and be forced to figure out. Adventure... Have a good day

    nice video! but I think you don't need to deflate your tires - and not deflating them will protect the rims.

    • @LukeGyver
      @LukeGyver หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks. In sum, deflate them, 50% should be just fine and you will slip through the checks like lubricated. There is a good short video by parktool regarding this with shared experiences from riders in the comments. th-cam.com/video/EQ4QUC3n9Es/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qUfw64L4wef62pA2

    Taking the bike apart seems complicated. I like the idea of a Brompton put into a large plastic bag from Ikea and surrounded by your personal effects.

      If you have a Brompton, you can skip the whole luggage check-in queue on newer Boeing 737 jets, like the 737-700 and 737-800 series, Bromptons fit perfectly in the overhead baggage compartment... Awesome you mentioned it.

    My cardboard bike box got wet on the starting tarmac and got severely weakened - as a result the handlers somewhere along the way ripped the whole end of the box off (fortunately they kept my sleeping bag from falling out - nice!). So now I run two bands of gaffa tape horizontally round the whole box - with one just below the handle slot and one 2/3rds of the way down. And I put two luggage straps (grunt) vertically to help hold in the wheels bulge. It’s little additional weight for a more robust outcome.

    Interesting video but a rather complex solution to something that can be accomplished in a simpler way. I've been bikepacking and flying around the world with my bike since 1986 and toured New Zealand five times. Must have flown in and out of airports nearly 100 times on all continents, and when I've rode to the airport I've simply let some air out of the tyres, lowered the seat, turned in the handlebars, and removed the pedals - then wrapped the bike in my camping groundsheet with 3 straps around it. In all this time I suffered just one broken spoke. As for the many airlines I've used there has been no problem with my method, only twice did I have to argue my point that I don't need a box, in 2016 with Cathay Pacific from Düsseldorf to Hong Kong, and this summer with Air North from Edmonton to Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. With this method I don't have to source or dispose of a box. But I do like your idea of half a skateboard on your box 🙂

    As a fellow designer I appreciate your work. I also know the sad reality that vans (and other vehicles) tend to look the same because over time the most useful and practical features coalesce into a "core concept". The very high and narrow rear opening as one example. Yes it looks awesome, but can my 5 foot tall wife easily get items in and out? How about the dog? Imagine hoisting a pair of mountain bikes in there.
