The Power of Community, A Home of Hope for Solo Mothers
This powerful video tells the inspiring story of the Young Mums House project, a beacon of hope for young mothers and their children. Born from a pressing need to provide safe, stable housing for young mums discharged into emergency housing or living in unsafe conditions, this community-led initiative offers more than just shelter-it’s a home filled with love, support, and opportunities to heal and thrive.
The story highlights the essential role of landlords, like Ray and Wendy, who chose to partner with 20Twenty to turn their family home into a haven for young mothers. Stating how we as a community cannot turn a blind eye to the realities many of our young people face and that we as landlords must be a part of the solution. Their desire and care for young people and collaboration with Twenty 20 demonstrates how collective efforts-from landlords to government support-can create life-changing opportunities for those in need.
Through heartfelt interviews, four solo young mums share their struggles and triumphs, from overcoming childhood trauma and homelessness to setting goals for education, employment, and a better future for their children. Supported by the dedicated team at 20 Twenty Housing, these mothers receive the tools, encouragement, and guidance they need to rebuild their lives.
As the young mothers work to break cycles of abuse and poverty, the video underscores a crucial message: everyone deserves a good start in a safe, warm, and loving family home. Healing takes time, but with the right support, these women are becoming the best versions of themselves, building brighter futures for their families.
This moving story is a call to action for landlords, communities, and individuals to participate in supporting or most vulnerable: it takes all of us to be the change.
Key Themes:
Safe and supportive transitional housing for solo young mums
Overcoming trauma, poverty, and emergency housing challenges
The power of community partnerships and private landlords
The inspiring resilience of young mothers breaking cycles for their babies
Watch now to see how the Young Mums House is changing lives, one family at a time. 💛

“I mean, if you could imagine only having a couple of hours a week where you can be yourself completely yourself and not have to worry about what people might think about that or what people might say to you. Manaaki Rangatahi - you are the fricken coolest!
The difference is this service is about the people at an equal human level caring about the health issues the person has rather than a western cultured business, a systemic and clinical business system that serves to gain $$$ for time, tick the boxes and then next person. One is about caring for the people one is just a prescribing business system. A huge part of wellness is in the portion of being connected, human connection and care and time.
Awesome video felt. The Peace. Of. The. Lord. Over This. Marae.. Ngamihi.

Please someone help this epic crew out and refurb the old changing rooms at the centre so the boys have a real cool space to chill. We as adults have so many places we can go to feel safe and just relax but our young people don’t have that luxury. Let’s get some builders out here!!
