I didn't say anything about pushing it back into place. Of course you should let the spring return the slide on its own, slowing it down or pushing it would be stupid. By slingshot i meant gripping the slide as if it were a slingshot with your index finger and thumb. Of any of the training I have been through, I have never seen anyone slingshot the slide and not get scolded by the instructor. But hey if it works for you I guess. Nice gun btw, I love my p220
