Ranking 15 Roguelikes We've Played
From Spelunky to The Binding of Isaac to most recently Hades, roguelikes have solidified themselves as an iconic gaming genre. Procedurally-generated levels keep things fresh, item synergies keep things exciting, and permadeath keeps things challenging. Every year more and more great games come out that innovate on the roguelike formula, so we figured it was high time someone condensed 15 of them into an algorithm-friendly ranking video. That's where we come in.
From platformers like Dead Cells, to turned-based RPGs like Darkest Dungeon, to deckbuilders like Slay the Spire, the roguelike genre has something for everyone. And although 15 games is just a drop in the ocean of quality roguelikes out there, we hope this video whets your appetite for roguelikes and introduces you to some games you may not have heard of before.

How the Humor of Undertale Fills You with Determination
มุมมอง 805ปีที่แล้ว
Undertale: come for the music, stay for the memes. When Toby Fox released Undertale in 2015, it immediately became a cult classic. With memorable characters, unique art design, and a killer soundtrack, there's so much to love about the game. But there's one aspect of Undertale that rises above the rest, and that's its pervasive use of humor. From witty one liners, to niche internet jokes, to pu...
The Original Spyro Trilogy is Magical (and you should play it so we can appreciate it together)
มุมมอง 43Kปีที่แล้ว
If you had a Playstation 1 growing up, there's a good chance you played Spyro. And if you did, there's an even better chance that you had the time of your life playing it, because the original Spyro trilogy on PS1 are some of the most magical games of all time (and we don't use the word magical lightly). Between Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, and Spyro Year of the Dragon, Insomniac Ga...
"Ice level, desert level" This themeing, or pocket worlds is exactly why I was drawn to Spyro and always love games that have different zones/areas. My fave is usually ice/snow, but I adore Cloud Spires and Aquaria Towers too and design wise, Skelos Badlands is so incredibly well done, from the skybox, music, themeing and stuff you could do there. A big draw of Spyro for me was this type of thing. Didn't have to have cool ones like Robotica Farms or fireworks factory. I just love games with pocket worlds. I want to theme my house in a similar way, like have an ancient Egyptian themed place (tastefully, not gaudy or garish, but like, there is a theme there) and space, comfort room etc. Another game of my childhood was the 102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue and that also had many many pocket worlds too. I dunno if others would think it's good, but I have very fond memories of it. I loved the Underground, Royal Museum, Spooky Forest and I will fight anyone who says the Toy Factory song isn't an absolute bop. Just looked it up. That game was also made by Toys for Bob, haha! Oh and "Spyro's Bad Day" animation perfectly encapsulates what you were talking about with how much our short king does and that he totally deserves a vacation. I say "oh-kay" on the regular now.
I loved how you talked about the reignited trilogy at the end of the video. Personally I think the first game is better in reignited than on PS1 because of how they added skill points and also fast travel to any level. Plus I love what they did with all the dragons you rescue in the game. They all just look so incredible I think. There was so much work and effort that went into making them I think. Especially Nestor, the first dragon you ever rescue in the Artisans homeworld. Especially how in the initial reveal trailer, the placeholder design looked questionable at best. 2 and 3 however, definitely best to stick to the PS1 versions if possible, but I love how certain characters react to Spyro’s flame like Elora and Hunter. Especially Moneybags and how different it is to Ripto’s Rage and Year of the Dragon. In particular the latter game when you roast him. He definitely deserved it! The sort of character you love to hate on am I right?
Well, I wouldn't say that monsters trying to murder human children and collect human souls in order to commit genocide on humanity is inherently a laughing matter.
The soundtrack compliments the gameplay and the environment so much that the combination of both is magical
They put crack in that game
Wow you are so underrated!!!!!!
thats a great content! If you ever decide to come back to youtube - it would be a great decision. Good luck :)
Pepe totally looks like the penguins in crash 2 haha! 😆
I love how in every Spyro video they act like them and everyone watching is just like yeah the music is the drummer from the police and I know all about him and have been knowing all about him forever.. doesn’t everybody?? 😃
I just started listening to the trilogy soundtracks recently (~ a few months ago) and it couldn't have felt any more nostalgiac. I was waiting for y'all to mention it! Great vid - you've got another sub! And one who believes in Spyro supremacy, at that 💜
I liked this video because he said “because he has a wiener coming out of his head” for Ripto lmao
Something that I think helps the Spyro trilogy is the unique level designs. At the time of its release the big 3D platformers were Mario 64 and Crash. Spyro takes a different approach from either of those series with how it designs its levels. Mario and Banjo both had open worlds that were fun to explore, but not as much fun to just play through. Crash had very linear levels that were fun and challenging but left little to no room for exploration. Spyro hit such a good balance between the two styles that made his levels fun to play through and explore. They were laid out in a linear fashion but had many nooks and side paths that made poking into every corner along the way entertaining. I really hope that Spyro 4 doesn't try to make everything so big and open just because most modern games are. I hope they realize that Spyro's unique level structure is a big part of why it stands out.
awesome fucking video. going to listen to the lofty castle ost for the ten thousandth time immediately after watching this
i just finished the reignited trilogy yesterday, getting all achievements. spyro 1 is a great game, absolutely loved playing through that one and getting everything. spyro 2 broke my soul and by the time i got to spyro 3 i just wanted to be done and never play the games again
The music really does put the game on another level - like on a Super Bonus Level! ;)
Peak video. Peak Trilogy
I've never had somebody think exactly like I do and just listen to them say everything in the exact way I feel about it. I found this video in the first place because I wanted to hear the Spyro 3 main menu theme. Hunter's new voice is not as good and the monks' "wyaiyaiyaohm" is waaAAAY better than the new sound. I like that when you pause the game though, the music gets muffled so it sounds like you're hearing music from far away/through a wall. and of course, being able to use the right stick to look around is great. Thank you.
I also prefer the voice acting and music quality in the original
Agree
If you're gonna play Spyro 3, play the american version for the music.

So true! Spit your facts indeed!
Wtf, this is so underrated! Commentary is great, just add more schizo sound effects to the editing and I bet more people will enjoy it.
Haha thanks!
This has always been my favorite game trilogy I've just finished the reignited trilogy and I always used to think 2 was my favorite but I got to say it might be year of the dragon now
The Crash Bandicoot and Spyro trilogy tracks are untouched!
I did NOT see number 1 coming. Excellent use of closet cat btw
Hey guys thanks for the video. It’s nice knowing there is people out there who understand the magnitude of which Spyro has instilled in me!!!! God bless guys. B.T.W Year Of The Dragon is the best Spyro game of all time right?
Thanks for watching! And you're absolutely right, Year of the Dragon is the GOAT!
@@nordotwins you’re welcome! And awesome so I haven’t missed out on the all time best of Spyro!
What is the name of the store with pepe? Is he still there? I need to know!
It's a grocery store in our part of the US called Kroger. Unfortunately Pepe was a product of the 90s and is no longer with us 😢
I'm not much of a roguelike fan, but my husband is. When we were dating we played a round of Entered the Gungeon and that's when I declared "boy, I don't like this genre, but I'm glad you do". He was particularly obsessed with Vampire Survivors recently, if you haven't played that one yet.
You know what they say, couple who slay together, stay together haha. I definitely plan on revisiting Vampire Survivors sometime. Thanks for watching!
In terms of story and visuals, Hades is great, C+ tier guaranteed just from that. In terms of gameplay, could been deeper than an autoclicker simulator, B+. Controversial? Yes, yes it is. I respect your opinion what this game is higher/lower than B tier, so can you.
Nice video
Thanks!
I respect everyone's opinions, but Dead Cells below Hades has me thinking *violent* things.
If it makes you feel any better, the music in Dead Cells is 100x better than the music in Hades
Nice list of games. Kinda makes me feel like a nerd because i did start thinking "um akcshually there is a distinction between roguelikes and roguelites" AND because every single game this video showed is something i have played myself. Also thanks for reminding me of curse of the dead gods, i gotta play it again sometime
I respect the commitment to distinction lol, you're a better gamer than us. What's one roguelike you would recommend we check out?
WatchMojo who? Kind of upset that Rouge Shadow Legends didn’t make the cut. But Nordo made it up with this legendary ranking video. Very impressed!
Rogue Shadow Legends, the unreleased Raid Shadow Legends sequel. Thanks buddy!
Great work guys! Another high quality video 👍🏽
Thank you 🙌
Honestly, I’m a bit mad griftlands didn’t make an appearance but still pretty accurately ranked imo
I played Griftlands for about an hour a few years ago and haven't picked it up since lol, so I definitely need to check it out again
Great vid! I’m OBSESSED with the binding of Isaac, and it always makes me happy to see it loved!! Def gotta check out some of these other games 👀
It's such a great game! Thanks for watching!
Reignited trilogy is what i dreamed during my childhood. I cried so much from nostalgia and how beautiful the artstyle looks.
Completion bonus? Once or twice I did care. But whenever I play the games now I go for lazymode and play the main levels, collect as much as I can care and still enjoy the games. Same for Crash. You think I go for all gems in Crash1 when I know the secret ending already? Maybe when I'm again in the mood for that, whenever that will be.
I played the remastered version of The Spyro Trilogy Spyro Reignited Trilogy and I love it.
I 100% agree with you on the music aspect of Spyro. I've played these games since I was a kid and have always thought the music was top-tier compared to many other games. That being said, I listen to the music (through gameplay) to study, and so far it hasn't failed me yet! The other thing that really makes Spyro feel magical is the fact that for its time it felt huge and that for a ps1 game, there was a lot to explore. You didn't feel constricted while playing it. I think that, and of course, the beautiful scenery also really helped. The fact that the games were made so quickly and that people still love them today says a lot.
Dang straight dude the original Spyro trilogy is the best❤❤❤❤!!!!!!
Great video, keep it up guys!
Thank you! Stayin on the grind
As someone who never has played this game nor ever intends to I loved the video. It seems to speak to the human experience. As a Christian I think determination is a huge part of my life as a believer in Jesus’ life death and resurrection. It keeps me going when things are tough and keeps me going when things are great. And the same goes for days that are kind of routine to be the best man I can be. Thanks for making this video, has allowed me to reflect on some good things and why they are the way they are.
Thank you for sharing this! It's given us a lot to reflect on as well!

Fantastic video, yet again how the hell do you have so few subscribers. You're like a diamond in the rough man
Thanks! Hopefully as we keep putting videos out the subscribers will come!

Getting you two to watch the anime I like fills me with determination…. Loved the video and now I want to play Undertale
Bless your heart for trying. There are a lot of anime references in Undertale, so you would probably like it lol
This is a very nice essay on how the Humor and theme of hope is conveyed in Undertale. Toby Fox's management of the exact tone and placement of humor in this game has been an inspiration for awhile. You make some interesting points on how it feels like the game holds out hope for you in certain points too.
Also I love the funny continuation of the "apology" at the end, good stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it! Toby really did something with this game, so we wanted celebrate it. And legend has it Noah is still apologizing to this day
Good vid fellas keep it up. :)
Thanks man! We will!
