You did a phenomenal job! Im not sure where you are located... but I wish I could take my car to you to have mine fixed
Thank you!
Are all of your blocks dustless? the whole shop?
Yes
Do you mock up the inner and outer quarter completely before you weld the inner? (asking for a friend)
Always do a test fit before drilling any holes!
Very nice work as always.
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice work my man.
Appreciate it!
How much would that cost?
One of the most informative videos I have seen on this process. This guy is a true artist I could sit and watch him for hours. Thank you for brightening my day.
Glad you enjoyed it!
is this about the same proceedure as with a model 3 2019?
Yes, exact same procedure
What in your opinion is the best aftermarket panel place to get one
Try to stay away from aftermarket parts when it comes to metal panels. The integrity of the metal won’t be the same as what the OEM panel would be. Which can cause some safety issues when being involved in a collision.
a technician is a parts replacer! a metal man is a metal refinisher. put the mud on it instead of pick and file.
What is the cost of a repair like this compared to replacing the entire quarter panel which is usually what the body shop recommends?
Nice work about to takle the same job
👏
how did you make the filler so liquid the second time at 7:50 ? Acetone, or maybe it was just the timelaps making it look more liquid than it was. Thanks for posting this!
The second coat of filler is called a “glaze filler.” It is a thinner filler which allows it to get into unwanted scratches and pinholes that were left from the first filler.
Expensive piece of equipment. Had one working at Gerber.
Worth every penny
The song….
How do you get the window glass bolts to align to the hole before removal? Also how to install glass back properly? Thanks for the vid!
Raise the window all the way up, that will align the access holes with the bolts. To do a proper install; drop the glass back into the carrier, put the bolts back into their slots but do not tighten them completely, close the door while keeping the door handle in the open position, slide the glass to the desired position you want it to be, open the door, tighten the bolts, and install everything back onto the door 👍🏼
Thanks that's very helpful. Hopefully you do a video for the back door handle as well
is that before and after? or after before?
Looking good
Thanks 👍
Gas $5 a gallon here. 😢 All bow down before Tesla 😮
Tx
How much is the repair for something like this?
Depending on your location and the hourly rate the collision shop charges, cost of repairs will vary quite a bit.
how much does a repair like that cost?
That is hard to estimate because each state and collision repair center you go to will have different rates.
@@AutoBodyDoctor i’m from texas but yeah ik i jus need to replace mine but i dont know what the rough estimate would cost i tried a few shops they didnt even want to give me one want to go to a ford collision repair shop but i work out of state not easy to just up and leave for it
If you're going to use that many rivets there's no need for panel bond
Not true, Ford procedures require the use of panel bond when replacing a bedside panel.
Do you need to be a ‘Tesla Certified’ body shop to do this type of repair? Or can most body shops do this kind of repair? I have a similar repair needed on my Tesla Model 3.
It has to be repaired at a Tesla Certified collision shop.
Looks great. However, that's a one time deal.If it ever gets damaged again, there's no getting that skin off
That is actually incorrect. The adhesives used to replace the panel are the exact same adhesives used at the factory. The rivets would be drilled out again and the same method would be applied for removing the panel that was just replaced.
Love your videos! Good work man...
Thanks!
I just did one of these last week same type of job. Dent on the quarter and repair rear bumper but it was the passenger side.
That’s awesome! Keep fixing 🛠️
Seems Like a huge waste of time. Can you just order the panel you need in the right color and just bolt it on?
Body panels do not bolt on and off. Only doors, hoods, deck lids, and fenders are panels that bolt on and off. The other panels have to be either repaired or replaced completely. A process involving welding and glue rivet bonding.
I thought yall replaced entire panels and just recycled the damaged part.
Nope, that is not the case
Great job! Did you have to do anything in particular when using the dent puller on a Tesla. ? Welding on sn EV,?
The steel used on Tesla vehicles are very similar to steel used on Toyota vehicles. Before performing any welds on a Tesla, it is a MUST to properly shut the vehicle down and cut off both the low voltage battery and high voltage battery. For both safety and to not possibly damage the computer system in the vehicle.
@@AutoBodyDoctor Thanks Doc.
How can i find mor info on how to completely cut off power to both batterys for dent repair?@AutoBodyDoctor
@@slapitdoor1118 service.tesla.com
@@slapitdoor1118disconnect the negative on the 12v battery and then disconnect the HV connection underneath the rear bench seat.
Wow!!! Im from Seattle, how can I reach out to you for an estimate? Thanks!
If you could send an email to me(located in my bio) with your personal information and an idea of what needs to be worked on, then I could get you a scheduled appointment. Photos of the vehicle and its damage would also help.
I use spr’s in the wheel openings and the by the tailgate. Blind rivets look terrible. Great video though.
SPR are cosmetically better looking, I do agree on that. Unfortunately when this video was made, the procedure we had gotten from Ford required blind rivets instead.
@@AutoBodyDoctor I get to tackle my first aluminum rocker/cab corner job this week. Hopefully it goes smoothly lol
@@bryanmallison3967 Keep the surfaces areas clean and do some quality test welds. Once that’s dialed in you’ll do great 👍🏼
Where in the ford procedure do they say to use spr?!. ford tells you specifically witch part number rivits to use in specific locations, none of witch are spr. In the day and age of liability and lawsuits, i definitely would follow manufacturer procedure witch this video follows correctly.
Good repair job.
Thanks 👍
was it easy to remove the rear side panel (carpet) inside?
Easier than a Honda!
@@AutoBodyDoctor Thanks ... any links to show the steps ...
My apologies, your user name looks like someone that I personally know and would’ve understood that inside joke. I currently don’t have any videos out right now showing how to remove the inner trim on the quarter panel. There will be “how-to” videos hopefully coming out soon and I will make sure that is one of them!
@@AutoBodyDoctor Thanks.
What riveting gun did you use? Is there cheaper riveting ? lol
Xpress800 riveting gun and yes there are other options available to use. We are required by Tesla to use specific tools and equipment for guarnteed OEM repairs.
@@AutoBodyDoctoris there only one type of rivets used throughout the Tesla or are there different rivets used for different parts. And do you have a teaching course on Autobody repair or do you know a reputable company that provides short course with hands on experience?
What’s a ballpark cost of this job?
Unfortunately I do not deal with the cost of jobs/repairs. It does vary a great amount where you live and what shop you go through.
Incredible video, super detailed, I like your style. I have a couple questions I was hoping to ask you. If you had to remove a box side panel from the truck to be reinstalled again on another box, rather then get a replacement panel, how would you go about removing it? Would you still use your belt sander and go from the outside or would you try and get behind it somehow? And did you just utilize the same holes the original SPR’s were located for the new blind rivets you put in ?
Trying to reuse a bed side can really only be done if it’s a steel panel. If it is aluminum then you should really be replacing it with a new panel. By the time you do get the aluminum panel off, there would be damage from using heat where it has been glued. Essentially making the aluminum weak and unable to keep its shape.
@@AutoBodyDoctor unfortunately I think it’s my only option here though so I plan to be extremely careful with it, not exceeding heat specifications and doing my best to not bend anything too much. It’ll be a lot longer of a process this way but I can get a used bedside for like $250CAD and I’m also replacing the cab corner on my truck so I’m buying a cut out cab corner section for $250CAD and I’m going to carefully remove what I need from that as well, being mindful of heat again and working as much from the backside as possible. I haven’t come across anywhere here to get replacement repair panels that aren’t extremely expensive unfortunately. I could send you pictures of what I’m buying if you’d be interested in talking more when you have free time but you probably get the idea. It’s definitely a big time investment for me but it’ll be worth it in the end. First truck and I plan to keep it for a long time so I’m pretty excited
I expected Oscar the Grouch to pop out of that trash can LOL
He is still waiting for you!
I bet his dog has the same haircut.
High possibility
How is it working for Tesla?
Just like any manufacturer for car companies; it’s has pros and cons.
How did you become certified? What certification program did you go through to obtain your Tesla certification?
It’s a numerous amount of tests both online and in person. Some are strictly through Tesla while other certifications are through I-CAR. Along with being certified as a technician, the business your work at also has to be certified by Tesla. Which is also numerous amounts of qualifications the business has to pass.
I learned everything I didn't need to know.
Thanks for watching!
Why was it needed to take the bumper off?
In order to perform a proper paint job, the bumper needed to be removed.
Great JOB!!!
Thanks!
Wish he would have said the approved repair times for the bumper and QP.. I’ve worked for a big insurance carrier as an estimator and for a shop as an estimator… if I was working for the shop I’d be looking for prob 8-10 hours on the QP w/ a blend to the rear door… if I was at the insurance company I’m prob allowing 6-8 hours on the QP and a blend to the rear door
This video was uploaded a while ago so unfortunately I do not remember the exact repair times that were given from the insurance company. Thanks for watching!
A guesstimate on repair times?
Stellar work
Thanks!
quality work! 👍
Thank you! 👍
Seen it tested on torque test channel. Hits really hard! Idk about longevity though.
It had been working great since this video was uploaded, I recommend it. Thanks for watching!
I have a very similar damage to my 2020 model 3 from a couple years ago on the driver side, which I still haven’t fixed. It’s crazy how much work goes into it. Thanks for sharing! Now I have passenger side base rocker cover that got damaged from running over a curb, which I have taped for now. It sucks that there is so much demand on repair that I can’t be scheduled till late July/August in Seattle.
Thanks for watching, unfortunately the wait time on having a Tesla repaired is currently a very long time. Due to the shortage of repair shops that are certified with Teslas.
@@AutoBodyDoctoryea that’s what I’ve been hearing and regular shops don’t even want to touch teslas. For some shops that do, they say it’s impossible to get ahold of parts and Tesla makes the process difficult. Now I’m wondering if that’s the case for any EVs. Both Rivian and Audi e tron appear to have only a few certified collision shops around the Seattle area and I wonder if it’s similar demand in terms of repairs.
