Clifty Canyon Waterfall - Sipsey Off Trail Adventure
Thank you so much for going with me Squidly! It was a great time. Loved the company (and the help getting through all those downed trees!). We definitely need to do it again soon. You'll have to take me and show me Ugly Creek and all of it's amazing waterfalls next time! 👍
Living in Decatur I have backpacked Sipsy often. I’ve looked at this area on Topo maps and wondered if it was worthwhile. Your video has convinced me to give it a try. A side note I saw a Black bear in that area in 2019 while off trail. It smelled me and luckily went the opposite direction.
Probably a tornado dumped off that shoe.
I think that’s definitely what happened. We saw some other tornado debris that I didn’t video. For example, there was a giant sheet of metal siding that had screws that had been ripped out. It was crazy. 🦑
I was just thinking it'd be nice to watch a Squidly video 😊 Those holes are a trip. That creek looks so peaceful.
Thanks, Rod! I pointed out one but there were probably 20 or more along that creek. 🦑
Awesome video Keith. Loved that area. I had never seen that before. It is beautiful 🤘
Thanks. I was surprised at how beautiful it was. Definitely worth going back. 🦑
Awesome job ladies!!!!
Great group of accomplished, hard hikers. 🦑
That's great. Looked like a lot of fun.
It certainly was!🦑
Oh the bravery it must have taken to enter the wilderness so outnumbered. 😬
100% outnumbered!! 😂🦑
Down sleeping bags tend to have more fill on top side than bottom, knowing your weight compresses the down and voids its value. Sleeping bag is for top side, pad is for bottom.
Agree 🦑
I'm pushing 80 and always go walking with a treking pole, sometimes two depending on the route. Also have a walking stick for use on occasion. As you say, both poles and sticks have advantages/disadvantages. Like the trekking poles because they are light and quickly versatile; a good sturdy walking stick has more strength which might be needed in some situations. Even as President Truman did for his "constitutionals" it is smart to carry one or the other or a cane, as Truman did, to prevent falls or slick spots, move vegetation, keep animals at bay.... Don't leave home without the one of your choice!
Well said. I like having one in hand. 🦑
I agree. Fall is my favorite time of the year to hike. The Sipsey was amazing, and even though I didn't get all the water. It made up for it by letting me see all those beautiful cliff areas. Temperatures were perfect and I did enjoy all the crunching. Take care, Squid!
Unfortunately, fall doesn’t let you see all the water falls. 🦑
Love hiking in the fall. The lack of leaves on the trees make it easier to see through the woods. On the flipside the increase of leaves on the ground cover things up (snags on the trails to trip on and interesting things off trail that you walk by because they are covered up) I'm not a huge fan of the crunch, I like it when the leaves are wet and quiet as you walk, but that does make them slippery.
Yeah, the CRUNCH is loud and makes it nearly impossible to hold a walking conversation. 🦑
The Fall is my most favorite season to hike! Not too cold & not too hot .... Less bugs and most times, the snakes are less. Fall has my vote ✅️
It’s the temperatures and lack of bugs for me. 🦑
Serving up trail magic with a stolen cooler!! I told you to stay away from Bob he's a bad influence 😂
😂🤣🦑
Fall in the south is my favorite for down here. I will have to say I got to experience an October in Rocky Mt NP and the colors were epic there! Hoping to get out next weekend! 🏕️🥾
Fall colors are beautiful everywhere. I love fall!! I might get out next weekend too! 🦑
I spend my entire year dreaming about hiking, and especially backpacking in the fall. Fall in Alabama is amazing!! This year though it has been unseasonably hot in October and November gets busy for me and I haven’t been able to get out near as much as I had hoped. Thanks for the great video! 👍
Thanks! Now that it’s cooling off, I want to go explore Quillen Creek. 🦑
We're at the very end of our growing season here. Mornings are so cold. Days are really short. But then think I'd rather have this than 100 deg temps. Looks awesome out there. I like the answer of the first couple 😂 Great video.
Thanks! I got lucky with a few folks who wanted to participate in my nonsense. 🦑
Definitely a spring time gal! It's the flowers and new for me. And the weather is still pretty cool.
Spring is pretty nice too, but I think Fall is still the best! 🍂🦑
Agreed 110% The wife was listening in and mentioned one downside to fall is the ability for venomous snakes to blend in with the leaves, which is true. But I explained to her the less likeliness of a bite due to their metabolism slowing and moving sluggish due to cooler temps. Great video bro
Thanks. Good points on the snakes. 🦑
Fall in the South seems fantastic for hiking (and it is) maybe because we've spent the last several months living in a furnace! Great video. I need to get back to Sipsey and get a look at that big tree!
Facts on the summer furnace. 🦑
The couple were so cute! Love that hunting/hiking season scare. 😂 So true! My goodness, you met some folks out there. Fall is my favorite, with spring being a close second; and I'm an all season backpacker. The lessening of bugs, snakes, and tourists make fall my favorite. Some people are afraid of flying rattlers if they're in Squid territory! 😂💚👊
I’m just out here flinging snakes at people. 😂🦑
I like it
😊😁🦑
"Warm fall" is an understatement. Going to make this next week's weather and its cold temp that much worse. But I'm ready. I have the wood heater ready to fire up! Fall is definitely my favorite time of the year to be out & about in the woods. The cooler temps and changing of the season being my two biggest reasons. Unfortunately, this year we have not had much cooler weather yet. As of Friday, I was still having to run the A/C on my afternoon bus route!
I know what you mean about the A/C. Fall has been slow to arrive this year. 🦑
I love Spring too, but Fall is more consistent. Spring is like a roller coaster sometimes, but being outside anytime is better than being indoors! Thank you for the video!
Spring is a bit unpredictable. 🦑
Cool! 😃💚👊
Except for the stolen cooler, it was. 😂🦑
Congratulations to everyone!!! Wow! That is the lowest I've seen Borden Creek!
Yeah, it was pretty low. 🦑
Well done! Great video. Thanks for leading the group Squid! 🙏
It was so much fun. I’m honored that I was asked to lead the ladies’ hike. 🦑
Thanks for leading us!! Even more thanks for taking our humor in stride and really making the day special!! Appreciate ya friend!
I’m very honored that y’all invited me along to keep the group on the right trail. Such a fun group. 🦑
Dang it! That's a nice cooler too. I'm always worried about that when I go to free campsites. Sorry that happened, hopefully they really needed it!
It was a really nice cooler and I was furious but what can you do? 🤷♂️😂
Oh no that’s the cooler🥹 It had all the stickers on it
No!! Fortunately, my smaller cooler has all the stickers. I had just started on this one. 🦑
@ Can’t have nothing🥹
@sharpironhikers1878 nope!
Cooler was stolen FROM you, or BY you??? 😂
FROM me!! Got back after the hike and it was GONE!! 😢🦑
@ MAN. That stinks. 😡
Great review, do you use the Kakwa as a daypack as well? Does it cinch down small enough? The features and weight make it a good all-rounder.
I haven’t used it as a day pack yet but I think it would be fine for it. Super comfortable carry. 🦑
Hey Squidly Where is Etowah Gear located? Thanks for the review buddy. 🦉
I’m pretty sure they’re in Gadsden, Alabama. 🦑
I pack my Kakwa-40 very similar to yours. Here is a video I recorded about a loadout last summer using it: th-cam.com/video/Xcg-FdRMhDo/w-d-xo.html This loadout was for "Philmont" - a group trip with the Boy Scouts. I've taken it on several other trips as well.
Thanks for sharing. I’ll check it out. 🦑
I agree. And I just bought a 20 degree under quilt. When I got it, it was only 40. Disappointing. Get what you pay for. And it’s hard to pick them, because of price. I really got to pay attention.
Yep! You really have to know what you’re buying and pay attention to the temperature ratings. 🦑
Great info
Glad you think so! 🦑
Good points! All very valid. #8 is my biggest problem, since my channel has ADHD as badly as I do, there is no telling what my bag needs to be! I might be camping with Shan in the teardrop, or I might be doing a thirty-mile hike with the guys. Or even a big kayak trip on the Yukon River. Or any number of things in between. That is why I have about 6-8 different bags hanging in my gear rack.
That’s a lot of bags😂 and #8 is the reason why I justify having all the bags I do. 🦑
@ I think that all of my bags, except two of them, came from Unclaimed Baggage, when I ran across them at a great deal! Haven’t found one there in a while, though. My main bag, that I use the most, is a 40° Northface that I picked up there for $9! And it is still in like new condition. I use it all the time!
@ I still have a 20° Slumberjack synthetic bag I got at Unclaimed baggage for about $20 in 1995. Super heavy but it’s still good for car camping.
@ We go about once or twice a month. Find a good deal every once in a while. And a steal every now & then!
Great pointers 🏕️🥾
Thanks! It’s the voice of bad experiences speaking. 😂🦑
@@GoneFeralWithSquidly I remember more lessons from the school of hard knocks than I do from university anyway 🤣🤪
@@elsieoutside that’s a FACT!!
Great video 👍 I notice with my 20 deg quilt with overfill I don't have to pat the down feathers along the chambers to even it out as much. I tend to do that more often with the 40 deg since the lower amount of down doesn't fill the space as easily.
🤔 hmmm. I hadn’t even considered the fill migrating. 🦑
All goods points and tips Squid! 😊
Thanks! 🦑
Well said Squid. Nice work. ✌️
Thanks Crow. You’re always so encouraging! 🦑
Great info! 😃💚👊
I'm glad you found it helpful. 🦑
That sounds like experience talking, and you know what they say about experience. 😬👍🏼
There’s no teacher like experience. 🤔🦑
Thanks, Squid, for sharing those thoughts.
I thought about you with the short quilt. 😂🦑
@GoneFeralWithSquidly I bought an EE long quilt and now it is too long. Lol
I’d add hot hands and a buff 🏕️🥾
I think the buff is indispensable in winter. I might make a whole video for that. 🦑
